Mullins missing from Orioles' lineup in series finale in Bronx
NEW YORK – The Orioles have a chance tonight to win their 12th series in 2023 after posting their 19th comeback victory last night.
Cedric Mullins is out of the lineup, an unusual occurrence against a right-hander. Ryan McKenna is in center field and Adam Frazier is leading off for the first time this season, but the 387th of his career.
Frazier will try to extend his on-base streak to a career-high 18 games.
Gunnar Henderson is starting at third base after delivering a pinch-hit, two-run double last night in the seventh inning. He’s batting .306/.324/.611 (11-for-36) in his last 11 games.
Ryan O’Hearn is playing first base and Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter.
Mountcastle hit his team-leading 11th home run last night. He’s batting .328/.348/.734 against left-handers and .196/.231/.341 versus right-handers.
Mountcastle has posted a .346 average and .846 slugging percentage when ahead in the count, and a .174 average and .339 slugging when behind.
Austin Hays leads the Orioles with 15 multi-hit games.
Kyle Gibson held the Blue Jays to one run over seven innings on Friday, and he’s working on extra rest tonight. He’s 1-6 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.618 WHIP in 10 career starts against the Yankees.
Right-hander Clarke Schmidt, the Yankees’ first round pick in the 2017 draft out of the University of South Carolina, has posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.622 WHIP in 10 starts. He faced the Orioles on April 7 and allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Henderson is 2-for-3 with a double.
Left-handed hitters are batting .356/.430/.644 against Schmidt this season.
