The Orioles took a break from scoring runs today to claim infielder Renato Núñez off waivers from the Rangers. He's joining the team on Tuesday, leading to another roster move before they open a two-game series against the Phillies.

The Rangers designated Núñez, 24, for assignment on Friday after he went 6-for-36 with a double and home run over 13 games. He's spent parts of the last three seasons with the Athletics and Rangers, going 11-for-66 (.167) with two home runs.

Núñez has played third base, first base and left field as a professional. He's a right-handed hitter.

Tim Beckham was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Nunez on the 40-man roster. Beckham's core muscle surgery has left the Orioles scrambling for a replacement at third, where Danny Valencia is starting today. Jace Peterson and Pedro Álvarez also have made starts.

Núñez, who's out of options, is a career .263/.318/.468 hitter in eight minor league seasons.

He's set to join a team's that found its offensive groove on the homestand.

Rickard mothers day outfield hugs.jpgThe Orioles sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored a season-high seven runs to take an 11-0 lead over the Rays. Joey Rickard has his first career multi-homer game, including a three-run shot in the fourth.

Left-hander Blake Snell was charged with five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings. Andrew Kittredge, who pitched last night in Game 2 of the doubleheader, let an inherited runner score and six of his own without recording an out.

Six straight hits and a walk before manager Kevin Cash finally took him out.

Kittredge was used before and after last night's rain delay that lasted 1 hour and 19 minutes.

Manny Machado had an RBI double in the fourth, following by Jonathan Schoop's two-run single, Mark Trumbo's infield hit and Valencia's run-scoring single.

Rickard, who returned to the club earlier today from Triple-A Norfolk, followed with his three-run shot to left field. Kittredge exited after walking Craig Gentry. I'm pretty sure that he signaled for his own reliever.

Valencia, Rickard and Trey Mancini homered in the second inning while inflating Snell's pitch count to 48.

Dylan Bundy has allowed one hit in five scoreless innings. He's walked four batters.

Update: Caleb Joseph tripled to lead off the seventh, on a ball that got past center fielder Mallex Smith, and he scored on Mancini's chopper to third base. The Orioles lead 12-0.

Update II: Jace Peterson pinch-hit for Adam Jones in the seventh and walked, and he came home on Machado's double for a 13-0 lead.

Update III: Also in the seventh, Valencia had an RBI single to tie his career high with four hits, Rickard drove in his fifth run today with a single and Craig Gentry added a two-run double for a 17-0 lead.

Update IV: Rob Refsnyder doubled off Donnie Hart in the eighth and scored on Denard Span's single. The Rays won't suffer the worst shutout in franchise history.

Update V: The Orioles defeat the Rays 17-1 for their second straight series win.

Rays outfielder Johnny Field pitched a scoreless eighth inning, walking one batter.

Bundy held the Rays to two hits over seven scoreless innings.
