Down on the farm, Tommy Hunter allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings for Triple-A Norfolk, with three walks and six strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches, 58 for strikes.
Hunter gave up back-to-back home runs to Durham's Brandon Allen and Henry Wrigley in the fourth. He surrendered 20 home runs in 81 innings with the Orioles.
Update: Jim Thome had an RBI single in the first inning - only his third at-bat with RISP since joining the Orioles, according to MASN's Gary Thorne - and Mark Reynolds and Ryan Flaherty hit back-to-back homers leading off the second to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead.
Matt Wieters' RBI groundout increased the lead to 4-1.
Both of Flaherty's home runs as a rookie have come in back-to-back fashion. #copycat
Actually, his first one was in back-to-back-to-back fashion in Game 1 of a May 10 doubleheader vs. the Rangers. Flaherty, J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis homered off Colby Lewis in the first inning.
Garrett Richards had allowed only two home runs before tonight.
