DETROIT - The Orioles designated catcher Francisco Peña for assignment this afternoon to create a spot for reliever Stefan Crichton on the 25-man roster.
So far, that's the only move announced by the Orioles.
Peña went 4-for-7 in three games and homered twice on Saturday to double his major league total.
The Orioles outrighted Peña on Feb. 15 after trading for Gabriel Ynoa, and he can refuse another assignment and become a free agent if he clears waivers.
Crichton could drive the shuttle back and forth. He's familiar with the route.
The Orioles selected his contract on April 13, optioned him on April 15, recalled him the next day when Zach Britton went on the disabled list, optioned him April 24, recalled him May 5 and optioned him May 7.
It's been a tale of two pitchers, with Crichton posting a 10.80 ERA in 3 1/3 innings with the Orioles and allowing only three runs in 17 1/3 innings at Norfolk, with two walks and 17 strikeouts. He's pitched only once since May 8.
Jonathan Schoop is in tonight's lineup after testing his right hamstring before batting practice. He ran sprints and moved side to side in a fielding drill.
Adam Jones is 8-for-25 (.320) with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored during a five-game hitting streak. He leads the majors with a .500 average (10-for-20) with runners in scoring position.
Manny Machado is a career .308 hitter at Comerica Park, going 16-for-52 with four doubles, a home run and four RBIs.
Chris Davis is 6-for-11 with four home runs, seven RBIs, five walks and six runs scored in his last three games. He joined Mike Young last night as the only Orioles to homer twice in extra innings, according to STATS. Young did it on May 28, 1987 against the Angels.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Davis and the Cardinals' Matt Adams (2013) are the only players to homer twice in the 12th inning or later.
