Robinson clears waivers, joins Triple-A Syracuse

The Nationals announced that outfielder/first baseman Clint Robinson cleared waivers and has accepted his assignment to Triple-A Syracuse.

Robinson remains in the Nationals organization but is no longer on the 40-man roster. He was placed on outright waivers on March 28.

Adam Lind effectively takes Robinson's spot on the roster. The veteran lefty bat has six seasons of 20 or more home runs on his resume and was riding a guaranteed contract.

Robinson made a big splash on the Nationals roster in 2015, after enjoying only a handful of major league at-bats in 13 career games. He hit .272 with 10 home runs and 37 walks. But in 2016, the numbers slowed. Robinson hit just .235 in 104 games last season, and his slugging percentage dropped almost 100 points to .332 (from .424 in 2015).

But the 32-year-old will provide a significant insurance policy at the Triple-A level. The Nationals could use his utility presence in case Lind or Ryan Zimmerman suffer injuries or setbacks.
