Marlins see Scherzer well early on again (Nats fall 3-2)

The Marlins have been able to see Nationals right-handed starter Max Scherzer fairly well to begin, connecting on five hits in the first three frames, with at least one single in each inning.

Scherzer-Delivers-White-Side-Sidebar.jpgMiami did the same thing to Scherzer in the teams' first meeting April 20 at Marlins Park, scoring three runs on six hits in the first three frames. The Marlins won that game 9-3.

On Memorial Day, Neil Walker was 2-for-2 with an RBI single to score Garrett Cooper in the top of the third. Scherzer has thrown 58 pitches and struck out three in three innings.

Kurt Suzuki's base hit in the second was the Nats' first against Marlins starter José Ureña. The right-hander has four strikeouts.

After three innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 1-0.

Update: The Nats made Ureña pay for the first walk of the game. Suzuki led off the fifth with a base on balls. Gerardo Parra doubled to place two runners in scoring position. Brian Dozier's sacrifice fly to center field scored Suzuki. Scherzer provided a base hit to right field. Parra slid unfer the tag by Marlins catcher Jorge Alfaro to lift the Nats to their first lead of the afternoon.

After five innings, the Nats lead the Marlins 2-1.

Update II: Scherzer finished six innings, allowing one run on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He threw 103 pitches, 81 for strikes.

Tanner Rainey walked the first batter he faced in the seventh. Ureña reached on an error by Matt Adams. Parra made a great catch of a Curtis Granderson line drive to deep center field, but Miguel Rojas reached third base. He came home on a groundout fielder's choice by Harold Ramirez.

Mid-seventh, the Nats and the Marlins are tied 2-2.

Update III: Against Kyle Barraclough, the Marlins retook the lead in the eighth. Starlin Castro singled with one out. Martín Prado reached on a fielding error by Trea Turner. Alfaro was hit by a pitch. Rojas delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Castro. The Marlins have scored two unearned runs to lead 3-2 mid-eighth.

Update IV: The Nats went after the Marlins bullpen in the eighth, loading the bases on a single by pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick and walks to Turner and Rendon. With two outs, Soto lined out to left field to end the threat. End of the eighth, the Marlins lead the Nats 3-2.

Update V: In the bottom of the ninth against Marlins closer Sergio Romo, Adams, Suzuki and Parra flew out.

Final score: Marlins 3, Nats 2. The Nats are 2-10 in Scherzer starts. They are 22-32 heading to Atlanta.
