The Orioles today announced the coaching staffs for their eight minor league affiliates for the 2010 season.
GARY ALLENSON is back for his fifth season in the organization and will manage Triple-A Norfolk for the fourth season after guiding the Tides to a 71-71 record in 2009. MIKE GRIFFIN, who pitched for the 1987 Orioles, will serve as pitching coach for the third consecutive season in the organization after his 2009 Double-A Bowie hurlers posted a 3.87 ERA. RICHIE HEBNER, an 18-year major league veteran, will serve as hitting coach for the first time with Norfolk after managing Class-A Frederick for part of 2008 and all of 2009. GREG GRALL joins the Tides for his first season as batting practice/bullpen coach. MARK SHIRES begins his 11th year as an athletic trainer in the Orioles' system and his fourth year at Norfolk. He was named the 2009 International League Athletic Trainer of the Year.
At Double-A Bowie, BRAD KOMMINSK returns for his third campaign with the Baysox after going 73-69 last season and being named Eastern League Manager of the Year in 2008. KENNIE STEENSTRA enters his first year as Bowie's pitching coach after one season at Class-A Frederick and four seasons at Class-A Delmarva in the same capacity. MOE HILL will return for his eighth year in the Orioles organization and his fifth as a coach at Bowie. JOE BENGE begins his 10th full season as an athletic trainer in the organization and his third at Bowie.
ORLANDO GOMEZ will manage Class-A Frederick in his sixth season in the organization and first as manager of the Keys after managing Class-A Delmarva in 2009, rookie level Bluefield in 2008 and rookie level Gulf Coast in 2007. BLAINE BEATTY returns as pitching coach for the fourth season at Frederick (also 2006-'08) after spending 2009 with Class-A Delmarva. DENNY HOCKING begins his first year as a coach in professional baseball after playing 13 seasons in the major leagues with Minnesota (1993-2003), Colorado (2004) and Kansas City (2005). PAT WESLEY begins his seventh full season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles' organization and second with Frederick.
Class-A Delmarva will be managed by RYAN MINOR, who enters his first year as manager after two seasons as hitting coach with Delmarva. TROY MATTES begins his first year as pitching coach at Delmarva after three years in the same role at Bluefield. Former Orioles outfielder MIKE DEVEREAUX enters his first year in the organization as a coach. He played 12 seasons in the big leagues with Baltimore and four other teams, appearing in 1,086 games. AARON SCOTT returns for his second season as athletic trainer for Delmarva (seventh in organization) after being named SAL Trainer of the Year in 2009.
GARY KENDALL begins his 11th season in the organization and his third year as manager at Aberdeen. SCOTT McGREGOR returns as pitching coach for a third straight season, his ninth overall. CESAR DEVAREZ will be in his sixth season as coach and will be joined on the bench in 2010 by JESUS ALFARO, in his 16th season in the organization. TREK SCHULER begins his 11th season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles organization and his second in Aberdeen.
Advanced Rookie-level Bluefield will be piloted by EINAR DIAZ for the second consecutive season after he served as field coach for the Gulf Coast League Orioles in 2008. Pitching coach LARRY McCALL begins his 21st season as a pitching coach in the Orioles organization, and returns to Bluefield for a second stint as pitching coach (also 1990, his first season as a coach). Former Oriole LEO GOMEZ will begin his first season as coach for Bluefield after coaching the GCL O's in 2009. TD SWINFORD returns for his seventh season, fourth as trainer at Bluefield.
RAMON SAMBO will manage the Gulf Coast League Orioles for the third season after guiding them to a 30-26 record last year. Sambo spent the 2008 season as manager at Delmarva, where he led the Shorebirds to a 78-61 record. Pitching coach CALVIN MADURO returns for his third season with Gulf Coast League. MILT MAY will serve as coach in his first season after scouting or coaching since 1985 for four other organizations. WILL LAWHORN returns for his second year as athletic trainer.
MIGUEL JABALERA will manage the Orioles' Dominican Summer League Team 1 and will be assisted by pitching coach ROBERT PEREZ, coach BENNY ADAMES, catching coach RAMON LUBO and athletic trainer EVARISTO MERCEDES. ELVIS MOREL will manage DSL Team 2 and will be joined by pitching coach DIONIS PASCUAL and coach RUBEN FRANCISCO.
BRIAN GRAHAM returns for his fourth season as the Orioles' Coordinator of Minor League Instruction. DAVE SCHMIDT, in his 13th season in the organization, returns as minor league pitching coordinator for the sixth season (2002-2004, 2008-current). LARRY JASTER, in his 14th season in the Orioles organization, returns for his third year as pitching coordinator for Florida operations. FELIPE ALOU, JR. returns for his third year as Dominican Republic Coordinator.
Former Oriole infielder MIKE BORDICK joins the organization as a minor league offensive instructor after spending 2009 as a roving infield instructor for Toronto. DON WERNER (catching), BUTCH DAVIS (outfield and baserunning) and DENNY WALLING (hitting) all return as roving instructors. BOBBY DICKERSON returns to the organization (1993-'97 with O's) as infield coordinator as well as field coordinator in the Dominican Republic after spending 1998-2009 in the Diamondbacks' and Cubs' systems.
LEN JOHNSTON enters his 34th season with the Orioles organization, returning as coordinator of Bluefield Operations. DAVE WALKER will begin his eighth year as Minor League Medical Coordinator and 17th season in the Orioles' farm system. MANNY LOPEZ will return as the Latin American Medical Coordinator. JAKE PARKER will enter his first season as Minor League Equipment Manager.
