Padres take early lead against Ross (Nats lose 5-3)

Ryan Schimpf hit a home run on Friday night for the Padres' lone tally against Max Scherzer. It was their only run in the first two games of the three-game weekend set.

On Sunday, in the rain-delayed start of the series finale between the Nats and the Padres, Schimpf connected on a two-run shot in the top of the first off Joe Ross to lift San Diego to an early 2-0 lead.

Trea Turner laced a single up the middle to begin the bottom of the first against San Diego right-hander Jhoulys Chacin. Brian Goodwin doubled and Anthony Rendon walked to load the bases for Ryan Zimmerman.

But Zimmerman struck out. Adam Lind grounded out to first base for a fielder's choice that scored Turner. Michael A. Taylor struck out to end the frame.

After one inning, the Padres lead the Nationals 2-1.

Update: The Padres were not done getting hits. In the second, Chase d'Arnaud led off with a double. He moved to third on a groundout to first base. Chacin brought him home with an RBI single. The Padres then enjoyed singles by Allen Córdoba and Will Myers to load the bases. But with two outs, Ross struck out Schimpf who had homered in the first - a huge strikeout that kept the Nats and Ross in the game.

In the bottom of the second, Wilmer Difo singled with one away. Ross struck out on Chacin's slider ,which has been a very good pitch for him to begin this game. Turner singled to left field. With two men on and two outs, Goodwin then singled to score Difo and the Nats cut the lead to one run. Goodwin is 2-for-2. Rendon got called out on a third strike.

After two innings, the Padres lead the Nationals 3-2.

Update II: This just was not a good day for Ross. He was chased in the fifth after allowing three more hits. With two men on, d'Arnaud smacked a single that scored two runs. Jacob Turner replaced Ross. Goodwin managed to catch a liner off the bat of Luis Torrens and fired to second base to double up d'Arnaud. After another single by Chacin, a fielder's choice to Trea Turner ended the inning.

Ross lasted four innings plus three batters, allowing five runs on a season-high 12 hits, walking one and striking out four. He threw 85 pitches, 61 for strikes.

In the middle of the fifth, the Padres lead the Nationals 5-2.

Update III: The Nats fought back with a run in the fifth. With one out, Zimmerman singled. Lind dropped a run-scoring double into right field. Chacin was pulled and replaced by Kirby Yates. Taylor struck out and and Jose Lobaton grounded out to end the inning.

After five innings, the Padres lead the Nats 5-3.

Update IV: The Nats had another chance in seventh to score. After a one out walk to Rendon, Padres reliever Ryan Buchter balked him to second. Zimmerman grounded out to short. Lind was walked. Taylor struck out to end the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Nats reliever Blake Treinen was hit in the foot on a comebacker off the bat of Yangervis Solarte. The ball appeared to ricochet up and hit Treinen on his chin. He was dazed for a moment, but made the play for the third out. As he came off the field, he collapsed on the steps of the Nats dugout and was tended to by team medical staff.

Update V: Brandon Maurer came in for the bottom of the ninth. He got Trea Turner to fly out to center field, pinch-hitter Daniel Murphy to line out to center field on one of the best hit balls of the day and Rendon to ground out to third to end the game. Maurer earned his sixth save.

Final score: Padres 5, Nationals 3.
