Fabian enjoying his first camp experience

SARASOTA, Fla. – Jud Fabian could have used a spoiler alert.

The young outfielder wasn’t surprised when the Orioles announced their roster of spring training invites earlier this month and slapped his name on the list.

“I kind of got told in November that it might be a possibility,” he said, “but other than that, I was just excited when I got that call that I was gonna be here.”

Baseball America ranks Fabian as the No. 9 prospect in the system, though he’s the fifth outfielder behind Heston Kjerstad, Vance Honeycutt, Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Dylan Beavers. He’s a second-round draft pick in 2022 out of the University of Florida and he appeared in 30 games with Triple-A Norfolk last summer. It made sense that he’d be in major league camp for the first time.

“It’s been fun,” he said recently. “It’s been fun to meet all these guys and go with how they’re working and what they do every day to get better. It’s a good learning experience for me and it’s been fun so far.”

Holliday taking footnotes from Roberts on playing second base

BRADENTON, Fla. – Jackson Holliday gave the media an interview at his locker this morning and headed down a hallway in search of former Orioles infielder Brian Roberts.

The Orioles chose Roberts as a shortstop in the supplemental round of the 1999 draft out of the University of South Carolina – their seventh selection among the top 50 and the only one that worked out. Jackson Holliday was the first-overall pick as a shortstop in 2022 out of Stillwater High School in Oklahoma.

Roberts moved to second base following the 2001 season and became a two-time All-Star. The position morphed into a full-time role for Holliday last year, a 20-year-old top prospect going through the usual growing pains.

The age difference between them doesn’t matter. They have something important in common, and Roberts, 47, is in camp as a guest coach and valuable resource for Holliday.

The tutelage centers primarily on Holliday’s footwork at second.

Hyde on Davis: "I thought he looked great"

Hyde on Davis: "I thought he looked great"
SARASOTA, Fla. - Chris Davis took grounders at first base today on the Camden Yards replica field, fielding balls hit directly at him and later working on gloving them to his side and starting an imaginary double play. He hopped on a golf cart and rode to the main stadium field for rounds of batting practice, getting down in an exaggeratedly low crouch as his new stance before returning to the usual one - and flashing some of his old power with multiple balls clearing the left field fence. In...

Brian Roberts included on Hall of Fame ballot
The latest Hall of Fame ballot includes four players with ties to the Orioles and one who made a significant impact, though he isn't likely to be a future inductee. Second baseman Brian Roberts appears on the ballot for the first time. He's joined by pitcher Curt Schilling and outfielder Sammy Sosa. Pitcher Heath Bell, also in the group, signed a minor league deal with the Orioles in May 2014 and was released after 10 relief appearances at Triple-A Norfolk. Roberts, now an analyst on MASN and...

Roberts a big hit with baserunning tips in instructional league
BOSTON - As the Orioles plow through the last six games of the 2018 season, continuing their final road series tonight at Fenway Park, their fall instructional league is humming along and attracting former All-Stars. I wrote earlier about the separate camps in Sarasota that divide players into traditional baseball activities, strictly hitting and strength-and-conditioning. Former Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, inducted this summer into the team's Hall of Fame, made an appearance...

More from Cedric Mullins' debut and the O's Hall of Famers
The Orioles scored eight early runs to lead Boston by five. In his major league debut, outfielder Cedric Mullins had two hits and two RBIs by the third inning. But as the game went on, Boston kept scoring. The Red Sox produced 14 runs from the sixth through the eighth in a 19-12 win over the Orioles Friday night. It was ugly and it took four hours and a minute to play. The O's bullpen allowed 11 runs. Dylan Bundy gave up eight to tie his career high. Bundy's ERA is 7.71 his past six...

Updating Mike Wright Jr.'s start, Roberts on O's Hall of Fame

Updating Mike Wright Jr.'s start, Roberts on O's Hall of Fame
SARASOTA, Fla. - The door remained open for Mike Wright Jr. to claim the fifth starter's job. It seemed to widen with disappointing outings last night from Miguel Castro and Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr. A solid showing today against the Red Sox might have decided the outcome. Wright retired the side in order in the first inning on only 11 pitches, but he threw 30 in the second while allowing four runs and four hits and walking a batter. Chris Vázquez homered, and Iván De Jesús Jr....

Orioles option Yacabonis (and other notes, O's down 5-2)
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles reduced their camp roster to 38 players today by optioning reliever Jimmy Yacabonis to Triple-A Norfolk. The cuts will come in waves, according to manager Buck Showalter, who meets with each individual. Yacabonis made eight appearances and allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings. He walked five batters and struck out seven. Showalter intended to meet with his starting pitchers before announcing the opening day starter, news that should arrive on Friday....

Roberts and Manfra elected to Orioles Hall of Fame
SARASOTA, Fla. - His new assignment as an analyst on Orioles broadcasts on 105.7 The Fan won't be the only reason for former second baseman Brian Roberts to come back to Camden Yards over the summer. Roberts has been elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame and will inducted prior to the Aug. 11 game against the Red Sox. The 50th overall pick in the 1999 amateur draft out of the University of South Carolina, Roberts spent 13 seasons with the Orioles and batted .278/.349/.412 with 351 doubles, 35...

Wrapping up the third day of workouts

Wrapping up the third day of workouts
SARASOTA, Fla. - First baseman Chris Davis and infielder Ryan Mountcastle have reported to camp two days before position players are required. Still no sign of Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Luis Sardiñas and Rubén Tejada in the main clubhouse. Davis' moustache could have gotten here two days ahead of him. "They're trickling in pretty good now," said manager Buck Showalter. "We don't go on the field until Monday, so a lot of early arrivals. "It's funny, a lot of young guys like...

Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge returning to Sarasota County middle schoolers

Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge returning to Sarasota County middle schoolers
Orioles pitchers and catchers are reporting to the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota, Fla., in just a few short weeks, meaning spring is right around the corner. Goodbye, winter's chill, hello spring's warmth. While the weather warms up and the Orioles get ready to start baseball activities, the organization is encouraging the youth of Sarasota County to do the same! Maybe not necessarily with baseball, but definitely in terms of getting active. (Especially since they essentially get...

Orioles bring back Health & Fitness Challenge to Sarasota County middle schools
Despite the recent gloomy weather, it's almost time to get out in the sunshine and get active. Actually, it's always a good idea to get out, be active and eat healthy, a message the Orioles are once again bringing to Sarasota County middle schools. For the second year, the Orioles and Sarasota County Schools are teaming up to encourage physical fitness, healthy eating and tobacco-free living among middle school-aged children through the Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge. The day Justin Turner was an Orioles hero

The day Justin Turner was an Orioles hero
Justin Turner would be the ideal utility player and a perfect fit for the Orioles if he hadn't outgrown the role. He plays every infield position and even has one inning of experience in left field. His power developed late. He's a great teammate and is willing to do whatever is asked of him. But the utility train has left the station. Turner is one of the more attractive pending free agents on the market and his timing is impeccable with career highs across the board: 622 plate appearances,...

Notes on Wieters, Matusz, Britton and more
SARASOTA, Fla. - Renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews examined Matt Wieters' MRI and concurred with team physicians who said there were no signs of structural damage. More good news for the Orioles, who held obvious concerns about Wieters after he exited Saturday's game with right wrist soreness. Left-hander Brian Matusz could get into a game this weekend after being sidelined with a strained muscle in his lower back. He hasn't pitched since making his only appearance on March 2. Manager...

O's game blog: Can Orioles bounce back against Tampa Bay?

O's game blog: Can Orioles bounce back against Tampa Bay?
Remember when the American League East standings were so tightly bunched? Not anymore as New York has separated itself from the pack. Tonight, two teams that have fallen back meet in St. Petersburg. The Tampa Bay Rays (48-49) host the Orioles (46-48) to start a three-game series. The Rays are in third place, 6 1/2 games out, and the Orioles are in fourth, seven games back. Both have been on extended losing stretches. The Rays were 42-34 on June 27 and have gone 6-15 since. They are 6-12 this...

Taking another look at the Orioles bullpen

Taking another look at the Orioles bullpen
The Orioles won't be facing Chris Sale on Sunday in the series finale against the White Sox. Left-hander Carlos Rodon will start against Miguel Gonzalez, with Sale pushed to Monday. The Orioles bullpen continues to lead the majors in ERA since April 29, though the figure has risen to 2.27 over 182 innings. Opponents are batting .219 in that span, which ranks fourth in the majors. Overall, Orioles relievers rank third in the American League and sixth in the majors with a 2.86 ERA. Orioles...

Notes on Cruz, Roberts, Davis and more

Notes on Cruz, Roberts, Davis and more
I've decided to begin the morning by addressing one rumor and squelching speculation about a former Oriole. I received a tweet about a Facebook status - yeah, so far it's rock solid - claiming that Nelson Cruz was buying a television in Baltimore for his mother because he received a new contract from the Orioles. Stop laughing. I have no idea whether Cruz purchased a TV, but I've been told by three people in the industry that he doesn't have a contract with the Orioles. He can become a free...
