Nats recall Adams, reinstate Fedde, DFA Clippard

The Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

  • Recalled catcher Riley Adams from Triple-A Rochester
  • Returned from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from the 15-day Injured List
  • Designated right-handed pitcher Tyler Clippard for assignment
  • Optioned catcher Tres Barrera to Triple-A Rochester (Monday, August 22)

Adams, 26, returns for his second stint in the Major Leagues this season after making the club out of Spring Training. He hit .192 with a double, three home runs, five RBI, and nine walks in 27 games with Washington. After he was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on July 1, Adams hit .224 with eight doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI and 11 walks in 29 games.

Fedde, 29, returns from the Injured List after missing 22 games with right shoulder inflammation. Before heading to the IL on July 30, he was 5-7 with a 4.95 ERA in 19 starts. He allowed 96 hits and struck out 70 in 92.2 innings. In his only rehab appearance for Triple-A Rochester, Fedde worked 4.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts on August 17 at Worcester.

Clippard, 37, was 0-0 with a 7.20 ERA in four games for Washington this season.

Barrera, 27, hit .182 with a double, four RBI and two walks in 14 games for the Nationals in 2022.

Nationals recall CJ Abrams

The Washington Nationals recalled shortstop C.J. Abrams from Triple-A Rochester and placed infielder Luis García on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to Aug. 13) with a left groin strain on Monday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Abrams, 21, is Washington’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 11 overall prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. Acquired on Aug. 2 from San Diego, Abrams hit .290 (9-for-31) with two doubles, two RBI, two walks and four stolen bases in eight games for Triple-A Rochester.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pound Abrams was San Diego’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 9 prospect in all of baseball entering the 2022 season, according to both Baseball America and MLBPipeline.com. He was cited by Baseball America as being the “best hitter” and having the “best speed” in all of Minor League baseball entering the 2022 season.

Abrams made San Diego’s Opening Day roster and his Major League debut this season, starting the second game of the season at shortstop. He hit .232 with five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, four walks, one stolen base and 16 runs scored in 46 games across two Major League stints with the Padres this season.

He was selected to represent the Padres in the 2021 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. He has been cited by Baseball America as the “best defensive infielder” (2021, 2022), “best athlete” (2020-22), “fastest baserunner” (2020-22) and “best hitter for average” (2020-22) in San Diego’s Minor League system throughout his professional career. Following the 2019 season, he was named the Most Valuable Player in the rookie-level Arizona League and to Baseball America’s Rookie All-Star team.

Ryan Zimmerman Weekend details

The Washington Nationals have announced full details ahead of Ryan Zimmerman Weekend, Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, at Nationals Park. Due to other events in Washington, D.C. this weekend, fans are encouraged to arrive EARLY on Saturday. Gates open at 2:30 p.m., and fans are asked to be in their seats by 3:00 p.m. before pregame ceremonies begin promptly at 3:10 p.m.

Nationals reinstate Stephen Strasburg

The Washington Nationals returned from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg from the 10-day Injured List and optioned left-handed pitcher Sam Clay to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Strasburg, 33, went 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in three rehab starts between Single-A Fredericksburg and Triple-A Rochester. He struck out 13 batters, walked six and allowed four hits in 13.2 innings pitched. Strasburg made his final rehab start on June 3 vs. Buffalo, allowing just one hit in 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Strasburg is Washington’s all-time (2005-pres.) leader in starts (246), wins (113) and strikeouts (1,718). Since his debut in 2010, Strasburg ranks among Major League starting pitchers (min. 1,400.0 IP) in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (3rd, 10.55), opponents’ slugging percentage (3rd, .353), opponents’ OPS (4th, .634), strikeout-to-walk ratio (6th, 4.38), opponents’ batting average (5th, .223), opponents’ on-base percentage (5th, .280), walks and hits per innings pitched (5th, 1.09), ERA (6th, 3.21) and strikeouts (11th, 1,718).

Clay, 28, did not appear in a game during his most recent Major League stint.

Nationals reinstate Adrianza from 60-day IL

The Washington Nationals returned from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated infielder/outfielder Ehire Adrianza from the 60-day Injured List and optioned infielder Lucius Fox to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Adrianza, 32, hit .364 with two doubles, two homers, five RBI, four walks, one stolen base and six runs scored in 11 rehabilitation games between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester. He appeared at shortstop (5 G), third base (5 G), designated hitter (2 G) and second base (1 G).

Adrianza appeared in 109 games for the Atlanta Braves in 2021, hitting .247 with nine doubles, two triples, five homers, 28 RBI, 21 walks and 32 runs scored. In 72 pinch-hit plate appearances, he led Major League pinch hitters in extra-base hits (8), hits (16) and doubles (5). He was second in homers (3) and RBI (12).

A veteran of nine Major League seasons, Adrianza has hit .244 with 72 doubles, nine triples, 21 home runs, 142 RBI, 115 walks, 18 stolen bases and 175 runs scored in 575 career games. He began his career with the San Francisco Giants (2013–16) before spending time with the Minnesota Twins (2017–20) and the Atlanta Braves (2021). Adrianza won two World Series, 2014 with San Francisco and most recently 2021 with Atlanta.

Fox, 24, did not appear in a game for the Nationals during this stint on the Major League roster.

Nationals select the contract of Jordan Weems and recall Francisco Perez

The Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

· Selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jordan Weems
· Recalled left-handed pitcher Francisco Perez from Triple-A Rochester
· Optioned right-handed pitcher Andres Machado to Triple-A Rochester
· Designated right-handed pitcher Austin Voth for assignment

Weems, 29, went 2-1 with six saves and a 3.38 ERA in 19 games for Triple-A Rochester. He struck out 32 batters and walked just five in 24.0 innings pitched. His six saves ranked second among Nationals Minor Leaguers. In 11 outings dating to April 30, Weems struck out 23 batters while walking just two in 14.1 innings pitched.

Weems has appeared in 16 Major League games across two seasons with the Oakland Athletics (2020-21) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2021). He made his Major League debut with Oakland in 2020, pitching to a 3.21 ERA (5 ER/14.0 IP) with 18 strikeouts in nine games.

Perez, 24, joins the Nationals for his third Major League stint this season. He has pitched to a 2.51 ERA with 21 strikeouts, four walks and a .189 opponents’ batting average in 15 games for Triple-A Rochester this season.

Rockies-Nationals postponed on May 27

Due to very severe weather predicted to move into the area this evening, MLB has approved the postponement of tonight’s game. 

The game will now be played on Saturday, May 28 at 12:05 PM as part of a split doubleheader.  Saturday’s originally scheduled game will begin at 6:05 PM.

Tickets and parking passes for tonight’s game will be honored at the 12:05 PM game tomorrow.

Nationals select the contract of Carl Edwards Jr.

The Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves on Tuesday.

· Selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr.

· Optioned right-handed pitcher Andres Machado to Triple-A Rochester

· Transferred right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson to the 60-day Injured List

Edwards Jr., 30, joins the Nationals after going 1–0 with three saves and 0.63 ERA (1 ER/14.1 1 IP) in 13 games for Triple-A Rochester. He struck out 17 batters, walked four and held opposing batters to an .068 average (3-for-44). Edwards Jr. allowed his only earned run on April 8 at Toledo (CLE) and went on to toss 11.2 innings of scoreless relief — with just one hit allowed — in his next 11 appearances. He did not allow a base runner in four appearances prior to having his contract selected.

Nationals cue up celebrations for Ryan Zimmerman weekend June 17-18

The Washington Nationals honor Ryan Zimmerman, the first Draft pick in team history and the face of the franchise for more than a decade and a half, with two straight days of celebrations on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18. Ryan Zimmerman Weekend highlights include fan giveaways, appearances by former players, and Zimmerman’s official jersey retirement ceremony prior to Saturday’s game, which has been moved back to 4:35 p.m. to accommodate the festivities. Ryan Zimmerman Weekend officially begins prior to Game 2 of a split doubleheader vs. the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, June 17, at 7:05 p.m. The first 20,000 fans age 21 or older will receive an Employee #11 t-shirt courtesy of Budweiser, and all fans are invited to strike a pose with several Zimmerman photo activations located throughout the ballpark. Prior to Friday night’s game, Zimmerman and some of his former teammates will reflect on the most prolific career in Washington Nationals’ history with live Q&A sessions from the field.

Saturday, June 18, is officially Ryan Zimmerman Day, highlighted by Zimmerman’s #11 jersey retirement ceremony. Gates open early at 2:30 p.m. ET with pregame festivities slated to begin at 3:15 p.m. MASN will have full television coverage of the pregame ceremonies leading up to first pitch vs. the Philadelphia Phillies at 4:35 p.m. The first 10,000 kids age 12 and under will receive a throwback Zimmerman 2006 jersey t-shirt presented by Harris Teeter and The Washington Post, and special tributes and messages will be shown throughout the game.

A World Series Champion, two-time All-Star (2009, 2017), two-time Silver Slugger (2009, 2010), Gold Glove (2009) award winner and National League Comeback Player of the Year (MLBPA) in 2017, Zimmerman spent his entire 17-year Major League career with the Washington Nationals and becomes the first player in team history to have his jersey retired. He was selected fourth overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft and went on to become the Nationals’ all-time leader in nearly every offensive category. Zimmerman established the ziMS Foundation in 2006 to raise money and awareness for programs benefitting those with Multiple Sclerosis. In April 2020, he and his wife Heather founded the Pros for Heroes COVID-19 Relief Fund, providing health care professionals with support, resources and meals during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nationals Park goes to the dogs with the return of Pups in the Park

The dog days of summer take on a different meaning this year, as the Washington Nationals’ five-game Pups in the Park series returns on Tuesday, May 10. Four-legged fans and their humans are invited to the ballpark for a doggone good time when the Nationals take on the New York Mets at 7:05 p.m., with four more of these pup-ular games scheduled throughout the season. 

Good boys and good girls will be surrounded by dog owners and lovers in the pet-friendly Outfield Reserved section where they can sit, stay and enjoy the tail-ents of some of MLB’s finest. All proceeds from dog ticket sales will be donated to the Humane Rescue Alliance.

The Nationals host five total Pups in the Park dates from May through September. Tickets are on sale now and can be fetched at nationals.com/Pups.

Nationals select the contract of Aaron Sanchez

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Aaron Sanchez from Triple-A Rochester and designated right-handed pitcher Patrick Murphy for assignment on Saturday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Sanchez, 29, went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA (6 ER/15.0 IP), 10 strikeouts and five walks in three starts with Triple-A Rochester in 2022. In his most recent start, Sanchez allowed one earned run on seven hits in 6.0 innings pitched on April 17 vs. Buffalo (TOR).

Sanchez will make the start on Saturday afternoon against the San Francisco Giants. He made nine appearances (seven starts) for the Giants in 2021, going 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA and a .234 opponents’ batting average.

A veteran of seven Major League seasons and an American League All-Star in 2015, Sanchez is 35-34 with a 3.93 ERA in 159 games (103 starts) across those seven seasons. He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and eventually spent six Major League seasons (2014-19) with the Blue Jays before spending time with Houston (2019) and San Francisco (2021).

Murphy, 26, posted a 6.35 ERA in six games out of Washington’s bullpen in 2022.

Monday’s Diamondbacks-Nationals game postponed

Tonight's game between the Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks has been postponed due to inclement weather in the area.

The game will now be played on Tuesday, April 19 at 1:05 p.m. as part of a split doubleheader. Tuesday's originally scheduled game will still begin at 7:05 p.m.

Nationals recall Donovan Casey

The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Donovan Casey from Triple-A Rochester and placed outfielder Dee Strange-Gordon on the Injured List on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Casey, 26, hit .250 with two doubles, two triples, one homer, six RBI, a walk and four runs scored in six games for Triple-A Rochester prior to being recalled. He hit safely in four of the six games, and five of his six hits this season have gone for extra bases. 

Washington’s Minor League Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, Casey was acquired by the Nationals from the Los Angeles Dodgers along with right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray, right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo and catcher Keibert Ruiz in exchange for right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner on July 30th, 2021. Casey is considered the No. 17 prospect and the “Best Athlete” in Washington’s Minor League system, per Baseball America. He was originally selected in the 20th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Boston College.

Strange-Gordon, 33, appeared in four games for the Nationals, prior to being placed on the Injured List.

 

Nationals recall Hunter Harvey

The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher Hunter Harvey from Triple-A Rochester and placed right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson on the 10-day Injured List with a right biceps strain on Sunday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Harvey, 27, joined the Nationals organization in 2022 after being claimed off waivers from San Francisco on March 21. He was optioned to Triple-A Rochester where he appeared in two games prior to being recalled. In 2021, Harvey appeared in nine games out of Baltimore’s bullpen, pitching to a 4.15 ERA (4 ER/8.2 IP).

After spending his entire professional career in Baltimore’s system, Harvey made his Major League debut with the Orioles in 2019. He was ranked in the Orioles’ top 10 prospects from 2014-2020 according to Baseball America.
 
Thompson, 24, made two appearances out of Washington’s bullpen.
