Nine Orioles announced as spring training coaches

SARASOTA, Fla. - Nick Markakis and Zack Britton have returned to the Orioles – to serve as spring training guest coaches.

They aren’t making a comeback.

Nine former Orioles will report to the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota to instruct the current players:

Scott McGregor – Feb. 12-22
Ben McDonald – Feb. 18-22
Zack Britton – Feb. 18-20
Brian Roberts – Feb. 24-28
J.J. Hardy – Feb. 20-26
Adam Jones – Feb. 24-March 7
Al Bumbry – March 1-5
John Shelby – March 6-10
Nick Markakis – March 6-10

Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. isn’t on the list, but he’s expected to make an appearance in camp. Ripken joined the ownership group headed by David Rubinstein.

A look at Orioles history in Home Run Derby

Gunnar Henderson is following a tough act in the Home Run Derby.

Adley Rutschman didn’t advance past the first round last summer, but he hit 20 homers left-handed and seven more right-handed in the 30-second bonus round. Henderson will stick with the left side. Seems almost boring by comparison, but this is no time to experiment.

Rutschman brought the added storyline of playing at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, the ballpark he attended as a kid growing up in Sherwood, Oregon. And his father, Randy, pitched to him, providing a sentimental angle.

ESPN and the rest of the media ate it up. Had to loosen their belts.

Chicago’s Luis Robert Jr. moved on to the second round by hitting 28 home runs. However, a format change this year doesn’t pit two players against each other. The strict tournament style is gone.

Some Orioles Gold Glove leftovers

Ryan Mountcastle was drafted by the Orioles as a shortstop in 2015, the 36th-overall selection out of a Florida high school with bat skills that figured to stamp his ticket to the majors. Evaluators assured that he’d hit at any level.

But where to play him?

The arm didn’t work at short, leading some members of the organization to quickly push for a position change. Others were slower to concede.

Valuable time was lost, and that created some friction. As if more of it was needed behind the scenes.

The Orioles decided to try him at third base full-time in 2018 after his 16 starts in the Arizona Fall League. They introduced him to left field the following year at Triple-A Norfolk, setting up his major league debut in 2020. But the career-changer came with the commitment to first base, where he made 82 starts in 2021 and 123 in ‘22.

Orioles to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 1983 World Series title

The Orioles will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 1983 World Series title with a special pregame ceremony on Saturday, August 5, prior to the 7:05 p.m. ET game against the New York Mets. The pregame ceremony will feature returning players of the 1983 championship team, including Orioles Legends and National Baseball Hall of Famers EDDIE MURRAYJIM PALMER, and CAL RIPKEN, JR.

The first 20,000 fans, 15 and over attending Saturday’s game will also receive an EDDIE MURRAY 1983 World Series bobblehead, presented by Royal Farms.

In addition to Murray, Palmer, and Ripken, over 20 members of the 1983 World Champion Orioles have already confirmed their attendance, including MIKE BODDICKER, AL BUMBRY, STORM DAVIS, RICK DEMPSEY, DAN FORD, GLENN GULLIVER, TITO LANDRUM, DENNIS MARTINEZ, TIPPY MARTINEZ, SCOTT McGREGOR, PAUL MIRABELLA, DAN MOROGIELLO, ALLAN RAMIREZ, GARY ROENICKE, LENN SAKATA, JOHN SHELBY, KEN SINGLETON, JOHN STEFERO, and BILL SWAGGERTY.

Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 6:20 p.m. to enjoy the ceremony. To purchase tickets for the August 5 game, please visit Orioles.com/tickets.

Murray and additional members of the 1983 team, along with the Oriole Bird, will participate in a clinic at Oriole Park at Camden Yards for 50 local Baltimore City youth from The Weinberg Y in Waverly, providing instruction on the fundamentals of baseball.

Rutschman participating in Home Run Derby

NEW YORK – Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman has more to do at the All-Star Game than represent the American League.

He’s also trying to win the Home Run Derby.

Rutschman is participating in next Monday’s event at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, joining the Mets’ Pete Alonso, the Rays’ Randy Arozarena, the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts, the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez.

Two more hitters are needed to complete the field.

Trey Mancini is the last Orioles player to participate in the Derby, finishing as runner-up to Alonso in 2021.

Jackson Holliday from his press conference, and Terrin Vavra set for MLB debut

The Orioles third-ever No. 1 overall MLB Draft pick arrived at Camden Yards today. But not for good this time. Jackson Holliday, taken No. 1 overall by the team July 17, has signed his first pro contract and will report to the O’s camp in Sarasota, Fla. tomorrow.

He is going to start his pro career playing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

“I’m very, very excited to start playing,” the 18-year-old Holliday said at today’s introductory press conference that also featured O’s executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias and Holliday’s agent Scott Boras. “It’s been a little bit since I’ve been able to compete on the baseball field. So very excited to get down to Florida and get going. This is what I wanted to do as long as I can remember. It’s a blessing to be where I’m sitting right now.”

Holliday got a bonus of $8.19 million, a record for a high school selection. He produced prodigious 41-game high school stats of .685/.749/1.392 with 29 doubles, six triples, 17 homers and 79 RBIs. His 89 hits set a national high school record.

He gets scouting tool grades of 55 or better across the board with his hit tool, running and arm grading out at 60 by Baseball America.

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Cal Ripken Jr. takes center stage

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Cal Ripken Jr. takes center stage
We should be celebrating the start of another baseball season today, packing Camden Yards for opening day the way only hard-core Orioles fans know how to do. What's that old adage about best-laid plans often going astray? Baseball is in a holding pattern and we're really not sure when the 2020 campaign is going to start. Luckily, we've got a treasure trove of "Orioles Classics" on MASN this week, and there's a theme of sorts. Cal Ripken Jr., the greatest shortstop of a generation (sorry,...

Orioles DFA Aquino, Showalter talks about Hardy (O's win 7-6)
The Orioles selected outfielder Austin Hays' contract from Double-A Bowie today and designated left-hander Jayson Aquino for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Hays will wear No. 18. Aquino went 1-2 with a 7.43 ERA in four games (two starts) with the Orioles. He was 3-10 with a 4.24 ERA in 21 starts with Triple-A Norfolk. In case you missed it, here's what I wrote earlier today about Hays' promotion. Meanwhile, the Orioles' grounds crew unrolled the tarp around 5 p.m. today in...

Another 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane

Another 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane
Yesterday's reunion of the 1992 Orioles that opened Camden Yards has left me with more material than I can squeeze into a few blog entries. Leftovers can be stretched only so far. And this is coming from a guy who's eaten cold Chinese food that's more than a week old. I've brought slices of pizza back to life. I've sniffed and scarfed liver and onions that were hidden in the back of the fridge. I've chewed through chicken that had turned to jerky. You can't scare me. One of Brady...

A 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane (O's win 9-7)

A 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane (O's win 9-7)
Rick Sutcliffe, the man who stood on the mound for the first inning of the first game at Camden Yards back in 1992, remembers the excitement in his household as the letter arrived from the Orioles inviting him to the 25th anniversary celebration that's taking place this weekend, beginning with today's luncheon at the B&O Warehouse. The feeling was much different for Glenn Davis, the former first baseman who arrived with tremendous fanfare and left as the centerpiece in arguably the worst...

Orioles sign Ryan Ripken

Orioles sign Ryan Ripken
TAMPA - The Orioles are breaking camp later today, but they're not done making roster moves. The club announced that it signed infielder Ryan Ripken, son of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., to a contract with short-season Single-A Aberdeen - which is owned by his father. He'll report to extended spring training in Sarasota to prepare for his new assignment. This is a reunion in a couple of ways. Not only is Ryan Ripken, 23, back in the organization for which his father played for 21 seasons - he...

The night Raines and Raines Jr. shared an outfield

The night Raines and Raines Jr. shared an outfield
Tracking and writing about the Hall of Fame voting last night took me back to 2001, when I was a fresher-faced newspaper reporter in my fifth year on the Orioles beat. I can't think about Tim Raines, who will be inducted this summer in his final year on the ballot, without reflecting on his brief time in Baltimore and how it unfolded. How he played in the same outfield as his son. How it contradicted the team slogan. Tim Raines Jr. made his major league debut on Oct. 1 as a defensive...

Take a look at this week's schedule as you prepare for a friends, family, turkey and now baseball-filled week: Monday, Nov. 21, 9 a.m. - Given all the drama and excitement an extra-inning game can bring, there are few things as exciting as a...

Alan Mills remains candidate to join Orioles' coaching staff

Alan Mills remains candidate to join Orioles' coaching staff
The Orioles continue to interview candidates for pitching coach and hope to make a decision next week. They still had a few more meetings scheduled as of yesterday. Double-A Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills interviewed on Thursday and he's a prime candidate to join the staff. However, he could replace Dom Chiti as bullpen coach rather than move into the dugout as Dave Wallace's replacement. While the Orioles prefer to hire a pitching coach first, they're considering the candidates for both...

Early notes from Camden Yards

Early notes from Camden Yards
The Red Sox lost to the Tigers today 4-3 at Comerica Park, opening the door for the Orioles to get back into a second-place tie with a win tonight. Chris Tillman's flat ground session went well and manager Buck Showalter is more confident that the right-hander will start Saturday night against the Astros. Tillman had his scheduled start last night pushed back due to some discomfort in his right shoulder. Dylan Bundy made the start last night and he's fine today after rolling his right ankle...

Orioles and Rays lineups

Orioles and Rays lineups
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Paul Janish is started at shortstop today as the Orioles try to win their fourth consecutive series. Manager Buck Showalter said J.J. Hardy is fine physically. He just wanted to give Hardy a day off after playing three straight games on the artificial surface. Gerardo Parra is leading off today and Steve Pearce is in left field. On this date in 1958, Hoyt Wilhelm pitched the first no-hitter in Orioles history by defeating the Yankees 1-0 at Memorial Stadium. Gus...

Dan Duquette: "We've got to get out of our rut here" (O's lose 11-2)

Dan Duquette: "We've got to get out of our rut here" (O's lose 11-2)
There's a touch of irony tonight that baseball's Iron Man is playing hurt. Cal Ripken Jr. said he flipped over the handlebars of his bicycle today and landed on his right shoulder. It's barking now and he warned reporters that he might have to throw the ceremonial first pitch from halfway between the mound and home plate. He wasn't kidding. Ripken stood in that spot and threw to close friend and former teammate Brady Anderson, now the Orioles' vice president of baseball operations. Ripken...

Cal Ripken Jr. reflects on The Streak 20 years later
KANSAS CITY - As the 20th anniversary of his historic night crept closer, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. found himself in an unusually reflective mood. Images flashed in his head, his father's face causing emotions to bubble to the surface. He saw the smile, the wave, and was transported back in time. Even an Iron Man can get sentimental. Ripken played in his 2,131st consecutive game on Sept. 6, 1995 to break Lou Gehrig's unbreakable record. The final tally read 2,632 before Ripken removed...

Notes on Tillman, Machado, Schoop, Britton, Matusz and more

Notes on Tillman, Machado, Schoop, Britton, Matusz and more
I loaded up my morning blog entry on information related to Chris Tillman's one-hit gem last night against the Tigers at Comerica Park. As it turns out, there's more stuff to pass along. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Tillman is the only Orioles pitcher since the franchise relocated to Baltimore in 1954 to allow a hit to the opposition's leadoff batter and finish at least eight innings without surrendering another hit. He also did it on Sept. 28, 2012. Tillman and Joe Kennedy are the...
