Orioles trying to follow path of 1966 champions

The Orioles scored twice last night in the opening game of another homestand, a paltry output by their standards but also exhibiting two ways they can go about their offensive business.

They collected three singles in the third inning, the last two with two outs, keeping a rally alive and passing the bat to the next guy.

Cedric Mullins launched a changeup onto the flag court in right field in the fourth to break a tie. They also can flex their muscle.

This is a special group, with numbers early on that haven’t been posted here in a long time.

The game began with the Orioles leading the American League with a .260 average, .459 slugging percentage and .780 OPS. The last time they finished a season first in all three categories was also the first time they were crowned champions.

Jim Palmer on Brooks Robinson: "Great player, great guy on the field, great guy off" (updated)

Amid the excitement of the Orioles making the playoffs for the first time in seven years came the sad news that Baltimore had lost one of its legends.

Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson passed away today at the age of 86. And nothing else seemed important.

A statement from the team and Robinson’s family read:

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Brooks Robinson. An integral part of our Orioles Family since 1955, he will continue to leave a lasting impact on our club, our community, and the sport of baseball.”

Nicknamed “The Human Vacuum Cleaner,” Robinson won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards in a 23-year major league career spent entirely with the Orioles. He also made 18 All-Star teams – chosen Most Valuable Player in 1966 – was named MVP in the American League in 1964 and was selected MVP of the 1970 World Series, when everyone learned of his defensive prowess.

Leftovers from 1983 Orioles media sessions

Players stood in the dugout yesterday at sold out Camden Yards to watch the ceremony honoring the 1983 World Series champions. None of them born before future Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. squeezed Garry Maddox’s line drive for the last out.

All of them hoping 40 years is the limit between titles.

Ripken headed downstairs after the Orioles’ 7-3 win last night and talked to manager Brandon Hyde in the hallway outside the clubhouse. The 1983 team endorses the 2023 group that is a season-high 27 games above .500, loving the talent and energy, and how it’s brought fans back to Camden Yards.

Returning players from 1983 championship team reminisce and find comparisons to 2023 club

Former Orioles pitcher Mike Boddicker didn’t hesitate when asked yesterday whether the Orioles can win the World Series, their first since the 1983 team that’s going to be honored prior to tonight's game. He pounced on the question like a dogpile on the mound.

“Heck yes,” he said.

“I look at these pitchers and stuff and I’m going, ‘Yeah, they’ve got enough, they’ve got enough.’ And they have fun. If you look down, they’re having fun.”

A few more highlights from 2021

A few more highlights from 2021
Baseball's lockout is fogging up the future. However, it can't blur the past. What's done is done. A new collective bargaining agreement won't adjust the Orioles' 2021 loss total or remove the gains made by their prospects. It can't tarnish the memories. Yesterday, we talked about Trey Mancini's comeback and Cedric Mullins' historic 30/30 season. Probably the top two moments of the season. Unless you think the following belong closer to the top: John Means' no-hitter It began to feel...

A day for giving thanks

A day for giving thanks
The date on the calendar, the 15-pound thawed turkey in the refrigerator and the forced viewing of a Lions game indicate that it's time again to give thanks, something that should be done on a daily basis, but tends to slip through life's cracks. There's the most obvious starting point - canned cranberry sauce. OK, seriously, it's family. Including my new wife and 14-month-old granddaughter who makes it impossible to remember what life was like before her arrival. She's such a blessing. I...

Means tries to keep streak alive today in opener

Means tries to keep streak alive today in opener
Johns Means has faced the Mariners once in his career and held them to one run over seven innings. Pretty much the standard output against him these days. The left-hander and staff ace is the first Orioles pitcher to allow one run or fewer in six consecutive starts since Hall of Famer Jim Palmer in 1978. He's assigned the opener of today's doubleheader, with Dean Kremer going in the nightcap. Palmer owns the franchise record with eight in a row. He also possesses three Cy Young Awards, but...

Remembering the other catchers on the '83 championship team

Remembering the other catchers on the '83 championship team
In the world of improbable World Series Most Valuable Players, there's always going to be a seat at the table for former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey. And you can be certain that he's going to block the plate. You know what they say about old habits. Dempsey went 5-for-13 with four doubles and a home run in 1983 and did his usual outstanding work defensively and handling the pitching staff. And the Orioles disposed of the Phillies in five games, with Dempsey embracing Scott McGregor after the...

More on instructional league, bullpen and a Hall of Famer's birthday
The Orioles are going to take the competitive side of their fall instructional league to the next level. Games will be played with teams from other camps beginning on Monday. Thus far, the Orioles have been arranging intrasquad matchups, which started this week, similar to the activity this summer at the alternate site in Bowie. The Pirates and Rays will provide the opposition as two of the three closest teams to the Ed Smith Stadium complex. The Pirates are based in Bradenton and the Rays in...

Important Orioles events on this date

Important Orioles events on this date
On this date in 1970, the Orioles were a day removed from clinching their second World Series title. The champagne had barely dried. But a year later, they faced a must-win situation against the Pirates at Memorial Stadium. Down 3-2 in games, the Orioles won 3-2 in 10 innings on Brooks Robinson's sacrifice fly off Bob Miller that scored Frank Robinson, who drew a one-out walk and hustled to third base on Merv Rettenmund's single. Brooks always will be remembered for his defensive wizardry in...

Remembering 1970: Powell and Buford on World Series win

Remembering 1970: Powell and Buford on World Series win
When the Orioles and Cincinnati Reds met in the 1970 World Series, we didn't know it then but we were seeing something rare: a World Series between two clubs that won 100 or more games. It would not happen again until 2017. The Orioles have three World Series wins and this was their second one. The 108-win Birds beat the 102-win Big Red Machine, four games to one, winning Game 5 in Baltimore 9-3. For the second time in five seasons, the Orioles were champions. The Orioles are celebrating the...

Leftover nominations for breakfast

Leftover nominations for breakfast
After offering a partial list of athletes who would interest me in a 10-part documentary, I wanted to pile on by including an obvious choice. One that must be near or at the top. Hank Aaron would be an incredible watch. Also a difficult one, given the ugliness that followed his pursuit of the all-time home run record. But racism isn't supposed to be comfortable. Aaron has shown a willingness in the past to share his experiences, the stacks of hateful mail with threats and harassment that...

Providing a draft ranking and a Palmer take

Providing a draft ranking and a Palmer take
At a time when we hope, but don't know for sure, that there will be a baseball season, we do know for sure there be a First-Year Player Draft. The draft is going to be held, although we don't yet know for certain if it will be limited to five rounds. But it may be just five. At a date yet to be decided - reportedly between June 10 and July 20 - there will be an amateur draft and the Orioles will make the No. 2 overall selection for the first time in club history. Readers here have asked...

Orioles offering memorabilia, ballpark experiences for charity

Orioles offering memorabilia, ballpark experiences for charity
SAN DIEGO - Major League Baseball redirected the Winter Meetings flow of information this morning, however briefly, by announcing details of its annual charity auction. This year's auction, with the Orioles again active members, will benefit five charities and nonprofit organizations committed to research, care and awareness/education of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is more commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." The Orioles are making available a collection of autographed...

Orioles to celebrate life of Frank Robinson on April 6 (note added)
The Orioles unveiled more of their plans to honor Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, the celebration of his life moving from Sarasota to Camden Yards. The club is dedicating a night to Robinson on April 6 prior to its game against the Yankees, with the ceremony beginning at 6:15 p.m. The program, entitled "A Celebration of Frank," will include a video tribute and collection of notable speakers with confirmations from fellow Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer and Orioles Hall of Famer...

More memories of Frank Robinson

More memories of Frank Robinson
On a normal day in an offseason that's been light on significant Orioles roster news, the signing of pitcher Nate Karns to a one-year deal would have lit up the social media switchboard. The conversations would have touched on his chances of filling a spot in the rotation, his injury history, the pros and cons of a low-risk move that eliminated infielder Jack Reinheimer from the 40-man roster, and maybe the assignment of uniform No. 36, which had belonged to catcher Caleb Joseph. The passing...

Mourning the loss of Frank Robinson

Mourning the loss of Frank Robinson
The man who is credited with teaching the Orioles how to win is being mourned today throughout the baseball industry. The words hit especially close to home in Baltimore. The pain digs especially deep. Hall of Famer Frank Robinson has passed away after a lengthy battle with bone cancer. He was 83. Updates on the severity of Robinson's condition began to circulate at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, including how he was in hospice care in Southern California, and the news remained dire at...

Palmer follows up on last night's Davis criticism

Palmer follows up on last night's Davis criticism
Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer exhibited pinpoint control again today on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network while defending his criticisms of first baseman Chris Davis during last night's postgame show. Palmer didn't back down after the network aired responses from Davis and hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh. After relaying how he read an article in January that pointed out Davis' propensity for taking third strikes, a total that led the majors, Palmer approached Coolbaugh in spring training for...
