Burnes: "Overall, great spot and looking forward to Thursday” (O's win 3-2)

SARASOTA, Fla. – The final exhibition start for Corbin Burnes was more of a tune-up for Opening Day. Get a few more innings and pitches under his belt and get him out of Florida healthy.

Burnes worked 5 1/3 innings tonight before Tyler Wells replaced him, allowing two runs (one earned) and five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. He totaled 57 pitches, 44 for strikes in his fifth spring training appearance, and did more throwing in the bullpen.

Other work in camp was done on the back fields. Not everything that happens is for public viewing.

Burnes finishes with a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings.

“We’re in a great spot,” he said. “We were kind of at the point early on where we were trying to find the cutter a little bit, just the command of it. Off-speed stuff’s been great the whole camp, which usually comes pretty quickly for me. The last thing is as you kind of ramp up throwing, it’s all about finding the cutter and we did the last two, which has been really good.”

Hyde on Suárez, Teheran, Kjerstad, McCann and more

SARASOTA, Fla. – Julio Teheran tossed four scoreless innings today in a split-squad game against the Rays in Port Charlotte, allowing only one hit in a final bid to make the club.

Teheran is opting out of his contract and the Orioles must decide by Sunday whether to put him on the 26-man roster or let him go. In the meantime, his locker is cleaned out at the Ed Smith Stadium complex, with only a folding chair inside of it.

Reliever Andrew Suárez’s locker is in the same condition. He wasn’t on the list of yesterday’s roster cuts.

“I think right now he’s in a little bit of limbo and we’re just kind of holding off on him right now and kind of waiting to see what happens,” said manager Brandon Hyde.

Asked about Teheran, Hyde said, “He’s in that boat, too, where we’re just kind of waiting to see.”

Remembering time spent with Peter G. Angelos upon his passing

The dates and maybe even the actual years they occurred all seem to run together now. But I think it was sometime during the year 1999 that I first met and had lunch with Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos.

At one point he said to me, "How is your sandwich?"

I said, "Really good, thanks." He asked more questions about how I felt about the restaurant (I don’t even remember which one now) and the food. I answered further. He paused a few seconds and then said, "Good, just checking. I bought this place last week."

All I could think to say was, "Good pickup for you, sir."

Over the next four years or so as sports director of the O’s flagship radio station WBAL Radio, I would get to know the man better and had several meetings with him each season at his Charles Street law offices.

Long-time Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos passes away at age 94

SARASOTA, Fla. – Peter G. Angelos, the longtime Orioles owner, famed class-action attorney and political activist in the city of Baltimore, died earlier today. He was 94.

Angelos has been in poor healthy for many years, with son John taking control of the team and running the daily operations in 2018.

The club issued a statement on behalf of the Angelos family that read:

“Today, Peter G. Angelos passed away quietly at the age of 94. Mr. Angelos had been ill for several years, and the family thanks the doctors, nurses and caregivers who brought comfort to him in his final years. It was Mr. Angelos’ wish to have a private burial, and the family asks for understanding as they honor that request. Donations may be sent to charity in lieu of flowers.”

According to a lawsuit involving his sons in 2022, Angelos had surgery after his aortic valve failed in 2017.

Nothing normal about Hyde's first three seasons with O's

Nothing normal about Hyde's first three seasons with O's
Orioles pitchers and catchers are supposed to report to the Ed Smith Stadium complex in less than a week. Six days, to be exact. With forecasted temperatures reaching the upper 60s. Cold by Sarasota standards, but not as icy as the talks between Major League Baseball and the players association. Everyone is waiting for official word that the start of spring training is delayed. Hammering out a new collective bargaining agreement and making the necessary arrangements to get players into camp...

Chris Davis announces his retirement
Chris Davis won't make a final attempt at resuming his baseball career. He's done for good. Davis announced his retirement this morning with one year remaining on his franchise-record seven-year, $161 million contract. He was out for the entire 2021 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery May 19 in Dallas to repair the labrum in his left hip. Memories of managerial searches

Memories of managerial searches
The process of hiring a manager in the offseason hasn't played out in Baltimore since Lee Mazzilli got the job back in November 2003. An organization that otherwise tends to wait and re-evaluate has fired Mazzilli, Sam Perlozzo and Dave Trembley prior to the final game. The Orioles also replaced interim manager Juan Samuel with Buck Showalter in August 2010. Showalter's contract runs out on Oct. 31 and he's already been told that he won't return next year. Phil Regan, the last Orioles...

Quiet start to Orioles offseason, Hill on hill, spring update

Quiet start to Orioles offseason, Hill on hill, spring update
Updates on the Orioles are scarce as we move through the last days of October. A final decision hasn't been made on the coaching staff and contracts expire at the end of the month. The Orioles are notorious for dragging out the process. Manager Buck Showalter already has met with owner Peter Angelos and he's back in town for Saturday's KidsPeace Trick-or-Trot 5K/1-mile walk at Camden Yards. Showalter and Angelos could talk again later this week. A replacement hasn't been named for head...

Jones on playing center field, his opinions and more

Jones on playing center field, his opinions and more
SARASOTA, Fla. - Adam Jones doesn't care if people want to criticize him for playing too shallow in center field. He's going to be himself, he says, and that includes making a joke about it. Jones ran out to the warning track on the Camden Yards replica field yesterday to start shagging fly balls, leaving the rest of the outfielders a substantial distance in front of him. But seriously, does he intend to change how he plays the position? "We shall see," he said, grinning. "I might be up in...

Joseph loses arbitration case (and signs one-year deal)
One arbitration hearing is in the books for the Orioles, with catcher Caleb Joseph coming out on the losing end in St. Petersburg, Fla. The ruling was handed down today. Joseph will be paid $700,000 instead of the $1 million that he sought. He made $523,500 in 2016. In 49 games last season, Joseph batted .174/.216/.197 with three doubles and no RBIs. He missed a month of the season after suffering a testicular injury that required surgery. Joseph registered a .994 fielding percentage and threw...

Updating the Trumbo negotiations and bullpen search
The Orioles no longer have their offer on the table to free agent outfielder Mark Trumbo, according to multiple sources. However, recent history suggests a deal still can be struck. The offer to first baseman Chris Davis also was removed last winter before agent Scott Boras again reached out to principal owner and managing partner Peter Angelos, which eventually led to agreement on a seven-year, $161 million contract. Trumbo's camp initially sought a four-year, $80 million deal that included a...

Wrapping up the sixth day of workouts

Wrapping up the sixth day of workouts
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles aren't commenting on pitcher Yovani Gallardo's physical or their agreement with outfielder Dexter Fowler. These are sensitive issues that manager Buck Showalter, a smile on his face, danced around again this afternoon. The club has discussed a restructure of its three-year, $35 million agreement with Gallardo, according to multiple sources. The question is whether Gallardo would be receptive to it or if the Orioles would be sifting through their other rotation...

Adam Jones: "My message to the front office was to keep the core intact"
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles center fielder Adam Jones sat at his locker this afternoon and fielded questions with a Gold Glove touch. His dinner meeting with managing partner Peter Angelos. The composition of the lineup. His new teammates. His disdain of qualifying offers. And somehow, his political aspirations. Let's get started. On Hyun Soo Kim: "He's attentive. That's the thing about it. He knows he was a damn good player over there. Coming here is going to be an adjustment for him. I just...

Peter Angelos on Chris Davis: "He's an exceptional guy" (plus other notes)
As the Orioles continue their search for another starting pitcher and outfielder, they're much more comfortable with a lineup that includes first baseman Chris Davis. It wasn't easy, but they got the deal done, reaching agreement on a seven-year contract that totals $161 million - including $42 million deferred and payments that stretch until Davis is in his 50s. It became official on Thursday. Managing partner Peter Angelos and agent Scott Boras worked late into the night of Jan. 15 to...

After press conference, Chris Davis mentioned Peter Angelos, David Price and one fan
First baseman Chris Davis has become the highest-paid player in Baltimore Orioles history. He has signed the largest contract the team has ever handed out. But he feels certain that how much a player is paid will not be an issue with anyone inside the Orioles clubhouse. "I don't think so," Davis told reporters after his press conference had ended last night. "Feel like everybody knows everybody so well. It is a lot of familiar faces ... I think it is encouraging to guys who may be looking...

Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter comments, Chris Davis on his talk with O's owner
At the press conference to announce the official return of first baseman Chris Davis as an Oriole, executive vice president Dan Duquette talked about the final night of the negotiations. The seven-year deal worth $161 million was finally agreed to last Friday night. "We always had Chris as a primary target to sign," Duquette said. "These deals, they have their own timing. Some take a while, some get done quickly. In this case, things came together late Friday night. "We had the structure of...

Orioles holding firm on offer to Chris Davis
NASHVILLE - The Orioles held another round of negotiations with agent Scott Boras today, but the conversation took place via a phone call and involved managing partner Peter Angelos. According to two industry sources, Angelos and Boras spoke again while trying to strike a deal with first baseman Chris Davis. They met in person before the Winter Meetings and were in contact again today while Angelos remained in Baltimore. The Orioles' offer hasn't changed, according to the sources. They're...

Odds and ends on Chris Davis

Odds and ends on Chris Davis
No matter where I go, no matter what time of day or night, I'm challenged by friends and fans to place odds on the Orioles re-signing first baseman Chris Davis. When did I go from sportswriter to bookmaker? The best I can offer is this: The Orioles remain in the running for Davis. They aren't scared away by projections of six- and seven-year deals ranging from $144 million to $182 million. I wrote on Oct. 5 that managing partner Peter G. Angelos said it "remains his intention" to re-sign...

Angelos on whether Showalter and Duquette will return: "Absolutely yes"
While the Orioles clubhouse may undergo signficant changes with six pending free agents set to hit the market, executive vice president Dan Duquette and manager Buck Showalter are expected to remain in their current roles in 2016. Managing partner Peter G. Angelos attempted today to squelch rumors that changes may be on the horizon. Asked whether Duquette will stay in the front office and Showalter in the dugout following a .500 season, Angelos replied, "Absolutely yes." Duquette and...
