Sugano on the Grapefruit League mound today, Hardy's take on Holliday

SARASOTA, Fla. – The next wave of Tomoyuki Sugano hysteria crashes on the shore today with his Grapefruit League debut against the Pirates. Protect yourselves at all times.

The first game of catch, first bullpen session and first live batting practice session were recorded and plastered all over social media. The Japanese media that tracks his every movement didn’t miss a single minute of it. The local beat crew fell into step. The anticipation was palpable.

Pitching in Bradenton isn’t the most ideal location from a media standpoint. The press box space is limited, to put it generously. Reporters who cover the Pirates usually set up in the workroom. That leaves a free-for-all to occupy one of the three stools in the back row.

You can’t call it “standing room only” because there’s no room, though standing might improve your view.

Statcast data is available at LECOM Park, which enhances today’s coverage. Sugano throws six different pitches and tracking is made easier. Let’s be able to identify them and attach numbers. And give me exit velocities from the hitters.

More memories of Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz

A memorial service will be held later this morning for former Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Glendale, Ariz. Teammates and the friends made through his years in baseball are gathering to celebrate his life.

That’s how they want to treat the day. To smile through the tears and to remember and share the many stories. To comfort and console.

Matusz, the fourth-overall pick in the 2008 draft out of the University of San Diego who appeared in 280 games in eight seasons, passed away on Jan. 6 at his home in Phoenix. He was only 37.

The Orioles turned Matusz into a lefty specialist out of the bullpen and he posted ERAs of 3.53, 3.48 and 2.94 in a combined 186 games from 2013-15. He made one start for the Cubs in 2016 and received a World Series ring. Attempts to extend his career took him to Triple-A Reno, Mexico and the independent Atlantic League, his last innings pitched in 2019.

Matusz was the bullpen coach for Baseball New Zealand in the 2022 World Baseball Classic, a final chance to remain close to the sport that he loved.

The young talents are finding their way to the middle of the O's order

They are going to be a great 1-2 punch in the Orioles lineup next season and quite possibly for many seasons to come.

A case could be made that the Orioles' two best hitters going into next season are catcher Adley Rutschman and infielder Gunnar Henderson.

And while that talented young duo combined for 602 plate appearances last year, they might get a combined 1,100 or more next season.

Among Orioles with 100 or more plate appearances in 2022 - a list of 14 players - Henderson and Rutschman were first and second on the team in walk rate. They were 1-2 also in on-base percentage and OPS. They were first and third (with Terrin Vavra in the middle) in walk-strikeout ratio.

Both players last year were ranked at one time as the No. 1 prospects in baseball.

More memories from days covering Orioles spring training

More memories from days covering Orioles spring training
Because major league spring training remains delayed and I'm stuck at home for an indefinite period - I'd definitely like to know for how long - I must live vicariously through myself. Oh, the memories. I loved the city of Fort Lauderdale and the proximity to South Beach. I had my favorite spots to eat and drink and made lots of friends. I didn't care for the small complex, the flooded dugouts and clubhouse after heavy rains, the limited space, the ballpark lights that didn't work, the...

A sampling of Hardy and Wieters from upcoming "Babe's Birthday Bash"

A sampling of Hardy and Wieters from upcoming "Babe's Birthday Bash"
Among the more humorous social media reactions to the Orioles moving back the left field fence approximately 30 feet this season is how former shortstop J.J. Hardy would have scored standing up on Delmon Young's bases-clearing double in Game 2 of the 2014 American League Division Series against the Tigers. The loudest moment in Camden Yards history. The press box literally shook. The new dimensions would have removed the heart-pounding excitement of a close play at the plate. Hardy's...

Honored and humbled: Hearing from the O's Hall of Famers
One day before they officially go into the Orioles Hall of Fame, the new class was honored this afternoon at a luncheon at the Warehouse at Camden Yards and spent a few minutes answering questions for reporters. The class of 2021 includes former shortstop J.J. Hardy, former outfielder Mike Devereaux, former broadcaster Joe Angel and O's superfan Mo Gaba, who passed away last year. Hardy spent the last seven seasons of his 13-year career with the Orioles from 2011-17 and won three straight Gold...

J.J. Hardy and Mike Devereaux on the O's Hall of Fame
Former Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy remembered being a part of the group of players that turned the Orioles from losers into winners and returned the club to the playoffs. Former outfielder Mike Devereaux remembered his great 1992 season and being a part of the first team to play at Camden Yards. The former O's duo has been elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame. They are joined by radio broadcaster Joe Angel, who will be inducted as this year's Herb Armstrong Award winner. The trio will be...

Long-time radio broadcaster Joe Angel will be inducted as this year's Herb Armstrong Award winner. The trio will be honored along with the 2020 "Wild Bill Hagy Award" winner, Mo Gaba, during an on-field ceremony prior to the Aug. 7 game against the Rays at Camden Yards. J.J. Hardy on instructor role, possible coaching future at O's camp

J.J. Hardy on instructor role, possible coaching future at O's camp
SARASOTA, Fla. - It is a nice sight for Orioles fans. Former O's shortstop J.J. Hardy back in the orange and black. He was back wearing team colors Monday as he began a week-long run in camp as a guest instructor. A very popular Oriole from 2011-2017, Hardy was known for airtight defense and remarkable consistency at shortstop. He's also remembered for the great slide at home to score the go-ahead run on the Delmon Young three-run double in the 2014 American League Division Series. He was a...

Adam Jones on another opener, Jonathan Schoop on his spring

Adam Jones on another opener, Jonathan Schoop on his spring
When Adam Jones runs out to center field for today's opening day game, he will tie Brady Anderson for the seventh-most opening day starts in club history. Brooks Robinson and Cal Ripken Jr. made 20 such starts as an Oriole and Mark Belanger is next with 13. Then come Paul Blair, Eddie Murray and Boog Powell with 12 each. Only those six players have started more on opening day than Jones and Anderson, the club's vice president of baseball operations. "This is my 11th opening day," Jones said...

Gausman and Bundy on being the only confirmed starters

Gausman and Bundy on being the only confirmed starters
The lack of confirmed starters for the Orioles rotation is both a concern and a source of comedic material. "It's definitely a little weird, but I'm sure in the next couple weeks we'll probably sign some other guys," Kevin Gausman said at FanFest. "But yeah, it's definitely a little weird right now for sure. I think I've had probably 50 people in the last, I haven't even been here a day, but say something about me pitching every two days. That's the running joke around town I guess...

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Trumbo gives O's 5-4 win over Beltway rivals
Just 19 days until Orioles pitchers and catchers report, folks! Until then, sit back with your second (or third) cup of coffee this morning and join us for a few more "Orioles Classics" moments to get you through the rest of the offseason. After Nationals ace Max Scherzer struck out 11 O's over eight innings on May 9, it looked as though a loss was imminent when the Birds were trailing 4-2. But they were able to pull even in the ninth inning with singles from Adam Jones and Manny Machado, an...

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: O's turn two triple plays in one season

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: O's turn two triple plays in one season
The 2017 season was the year of the triple play for Baltimore. One of the rarest feats in baseball, the Orioles accomplished it twice in two different ballparks almost three months apart. The first was on May 2 at Fenway Park and was a bit unconventional. A popup from Jackie Bradley Jr. failed to meet J.J. Hardy's glove, but he quickly tossed the ball over to Jonathan Schoop, who tagged Mitch Moreland before touching second to force Dustin Pedroia out, then fired it over to Chris Davis to get...

"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Players Weekend gets O's fired up in 16-3 win over Red Sox
Happy New Year, everyone! As we inch closer and closer to Spring Training and the 2018 season we'll continue to take at more memorable throwback moments from last year to get you through the next few weeks. One of the best parts of the 2017 season was MLB's new player-focused initiative, Players Weekend. With customized alternate jerseys, nicknames and commemorative patches, players got the chance to show us all a different, more personal side of themselves that they don't normally get to...

Coolbaugh on Santander: "I like what I see from him"

Coolbaugh on Santander: "I like what I see from him"
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rule 5 pick Anthony Santander cooled off last night inside Tropicana Field, where it's always 72 degrees and able to withstand heavy rains like the kind that pummeled it for much of the game. Santander had five hits in his last eight at-bats, including three doubles, before going 0-for-4 in the Orioles' 7-0 loss to the Rays. The Orioles were held to four hits and suffered their 11th shutout of the season. Their 80 runs in September are the fewest in the majors. Manager...

Andrew Stetka: Hardy left an impression on Orioles

Andrew Stetka: Hardy left an impression on Orioles
In my consumption of Orioles news and commentary over the last week, I heard something that caught me off-guard. The Orioles Hall of Fame conversation came up and it surrounded shortstop J.J. Hardy. My immediate reaction was puzzled. Why would Hardy be a shoe-in for the team's Hall of Fame? He's never even been the best player on his own team, let alone a standout during his tenure in Baltimore. After a moment of thinking about it, I realized that none of that mattered. That's not what the...

Honoring Hardy, Sisco's first start, Scott's second game and more

Honoring Hardy, Sisco's first start, Scott's second game and more
It is not often when a player gets a standing ovation that players in the dugouts join in. But that happened for Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy yesterday when he came to bat in the bottom of the first inning. It was a pretty special moment at Camden Yards. "I did notice that," Hardy said. "It was special. Those are guys that I played against for the last seven years. I have all the respect for all of them, and it was pretty cool to see them also clapping." The Orioles fans were very aware...

J.J. Hardy hits go-ahead homer as O's win home finale (with quotes)
On a day that seems likely to be his final one playing as an Oriole at Camden Yards, shortstop J.J. Hardy hit a go-ahead homer as the Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-4 to complete their home season. Hardy got a standing ovation, including applause from players on both teams, and waved to the crowd before he batted in the bottom of the first. Then he got a curtain call after his two-run homer in the fourth broke a 4-4 tie. Hardy hit a 3-2 slider from Chris Archer 400 feet for his first homer...

Pregame notes from Oakland on Jiménez, Bundy and more

Pregame notes from Oakland on Jiménez, Bundy and more
OAKLAND, Calif. - Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jiménez is fine to make his next start. Jiménez fanned 11 and gave up three runs over 5 1/3 innings last night. He was pulled from the game after being hit on the right leg by a hot-smash grounder off the bat of Chad Pinder that went for an infield hit. After the game, Jiménez said he was pretty certain he was going to be fine. Manager Buck Showalter confirmed this afternoon that he is. "The biggest problem he had - it's the same place he...

Dillon Atkinson: Do Ryan Flaherty and J.J. Hardy have secure spots once activated?

Dillon Atkinson: Do Ryan Flaherty and J.J. Hardy have secure spots once activated?
With the great production coming from the shortstop position in the last week, you may have forgotten that Orioles infielders Ryan Flaherty and J.J. Hardy are going to be returning to the ballclub this month, barring any setbacks. Flaherty, who has been on the disabled list since May 19 with a right shoulder strain, is currently rehabbing at Double-A Bowie. His rehab assignment ends August 15, but manager Buck Showalter hopes he'll be ready to go sooner. Hardy was placed on the shelf June 19...
