Leftovers for breakfast

Jordan Westburg knew that the local media was hovering around his locker after last night’s game. Notepads, recorders, cameras, microphones. All of them waiting for the player who found out about his All-Star selection earlier in the day and homered in his first at-bat. He was an obvious interview.

The scrum moved on from starting pitcher Dean Kremer, but Westburg first had to attend an All-Star meeting with teammates joining him in Arlington, Texas. It couldn’t be avoided.

All part of a whirlwind day that included phone calls to wife Anna Claire and his parents.

Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson, the first two draft picks under executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias, are starting at catcher and shortstop, respectively, for the American League. Corbin Burnes could be the starting pitcher working on an extra day of rest. That announcement is pending.

Rutschman was the backup catcher in last year’s Midsummer Classic in Seattle and participated in the Home Run Derby. He’s the veteran among the position players.

The Orioles don’t need more reminders that their bullpen has a giant hole in the back. They’ve felt the impact of losing Félix Bautista. They’ve made late-inning relief a priority in the offseason.

But Bautista’s importance to the club, how much he dominated hitters this summer, was discussed again last night with his selection as the American League’s top reliever.

Bautista received the Mariano Rivera Award, with Milwaukee’s Devin Williams getting the National League’s version named for Trevor Hoffman.

A six-man panel of former relievers, including Rivera and Hoffman, handled the voting, and Bautista was the unanimous choice.

This is the latest honor for the Orioles, after Gunner Henderson was chosen as the AL’s Rookie of the Year, Brandon Hyde as Manager of the Year and Mike Elias as Executive of the Year. Henderson and Adley Rutschman won Silver Slugger Awards.

Machado: “I’ve never seen a team rebuild that quickly"

SAN DIEGO – Manny Machado dug in against Orioles closer Félix Bautista last night with two Padres on base and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, back-to-back walks allowing him to represent the potential tying run. Machado took a 101.2 mph fastball out of the strike zone, missed a 100.4 mph fastball, offered at a splitter and grounded it to third baseman Ramón Urías for the game-ending double play.

One team moved a season-high 29 games above .500. The other kept spiraling downward.

The Orioles hadn’t played the Padres since 2019, a year after former executive Dan Duquette began the complete teardown of the club by trading Machado to the Dodgers for five players, including starter Dean Kremer.

Closer Zack Britton was gone a week later, followed by relievers Brad Brach and Darren O’Day, starter Kevin Gausman and second baseman Jonathan Schoop.

The competitive window slammed shut, and the only sounds left were goodbyes and some tears.

Coolbaugh and Flaherty familiar with Mazara's work

SARASOTA, Fla. - Outfielder Nomar Mazara is new to the Orioles, signing a minor league contract on Dec. 6. He knows catcher James McCann and non-roster outfielder Daz Cameron from previous stops, but it’s one of the team’s former hitting coaches who’s created the strongest ties.

Scott Coolbaugh, who held the job with the Orioles for the last four seasons of manager Buck Showalter’s tenure, has worked with Mazara in three organizations – the Rangers in various capacities after they signed him as an amateur free agent in July 2011, the White Sox in 2020 and Tigers in 2021.

Has to be some sort of record, or darn close to it.

Mazara appeared in 55 games with the Padres last summer and he just missed another reunion with Coolbaugh, who was hired in January to serve as an assistant hitting coach.

“Nomar Mazara is a great guy, good character and usually very quiet and goes about his business,” Coolbaugh wrote in a text message. “I’ve known him since he was 16. Offensively, he is very capable of being a threat versus right-handed pitching and is less versus left-handed pitching. His biggest issue is that he has slowed down defensively with range and speed. Very accurate with his arm but slow to transfer.

Former Orioles knew where Mateo belonged

Former Orioles knew where Mateo belonged
The comments were made in jest and thousands of miles away from Baltimore. By former members of the Orioles organization who saw a perfect marriage between one of their players and the rebuilding team they left behind. Never did they imagine that it would actually come true. The Orioles claimed Jorge Mateo on waivers a month ago and he's reached base in 24 of his 25 starts, with a walk and his 10th stolen base last night. His name keeps appearing in the lineup, which the Padres couldn't do...

Flaherty on Mansolino: "He'll be good, really good"

Flaherty on Mansolino: "He'll be good, really good"
Former Orioles utility player Ryan Flaherty believes that the club made a smart hire in Tony Mansolino, who is replacing José Flores as third base coach and infield instructor. Flaherty has known Mansolino for a long time. They were drafted three years apart from Vanderbilt University and Mansolino managed Flaherty at Triple-A Columbus in the Indians organization in 2019. The Orioles haven't announced the composition of their coaching staff, but a source last week confirmed Mansolino's...

Remembering some sports disagreements with my dad

Remembering some sports disagreements with my dad
Today marks the second Father's Day since my dad passed away in January 2019. It's supposed to get easier, I'm told. Except for the people who tell me that it never gets easier. Guess I'll find out. I've shared how he took me to my first baseball game in 1971 at Memorial Stadium. Game 2 of the World Series, with the Orioles winning 11-3 after a rainout the previous day. I got to miss school, hang out with my dad and watch baseball live. It could have been an exhibition game and I'd still...

Flaherty becomes latest ex-Oriole to join Padres coaching staff

Flaherty becomes latest ex-Oriole to join Padres coaching staff
As we wait for Orioles news beyond additions to the front office and 40-man roster, I'm wondering what exactly is happening in San Diego. Besides the perfect weather, of course. The Padres reportedly have hired former Orioles utility infielder Ryan Flaherty as quality control coach. They've already added Bobby Dickerson as bench coach and Wayne Kirby as first base coach - two former members of manager Buck Showalter's staff. An announcement is expected this week. If the Padres really want to...

Wilkerson prepared to work with new outfield instructor

Wilkerson prepared to work with new outfield instructor
Removing Arnie Beyeler as first base coach earlier this month also requires the Orioles to find a new outfield instructor. It's a two-pronged search. Beyeler handled those duties as Wayne Kirby did under former manager Buck Showalter. Has anyone been more challenged in the role than Beyeler? He had to teach Stevie Wilkerson to play center field, a brand new position for the utility infielder. He needed Wilkerson to grow more comfortable in left and right, where the results also were...

Recalling past playoff series and pitchers posting big innings

Recalling past playoff series and pitchers posting big innings
Watching David Price plow through the Astros lineup Thursday night in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, the clincher for the Red Sox, brought reminders of the 2014 Division Series and how the Orioles bested the veteran left-hander to complete their sweep of the Tigers. They didn't dominate him, winning 2-1 and advancing to the ALCS, but they defeated three former Cy Young Award winners in Price, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer off Price in...

Markakis isn't stressing over All-Star status (tied 7-7)

Markakis isn't stressing over All-Star status (tied 7-7)
ATLANTA - Nick Markakis wouldn't stay true to himself if he suddenly began to campaign for his inclusion on the All-Star team or felt comfortable with the Braves public relations staff doing it for him. Messages on the scoreboard urging fans to vote for Markakis made him cringe each time he looked up and saw them. He just wants to play and let the process unfold. He'd rather pound baseballs over the plate than his own chest. Markakis leads all National League outfielders in the latest...

Showalter on roster moves, Beckham and more (O's win 6-5)

Showalter on roster moves, Beckham and more (O's win 6-5)
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The two roster cuts that are coming following today's game involve players in the Orioles lineup and it's probably safe to assume that outfielder Cedric Mullins and infielder Luis Sardiñas will be reassigned to minor league camp. Outfielder Alex Presley is exploring opportunities via the opt-out clause in his contract, which explains why he isn't on today's lineup card. He could double back to the organization and begin the season at Triple-A Norfolk. Presley is...

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
SARASOTA, Fla. - Because Alex Cobb won't be able to break camp with the Orioles, his signing this week doesn't do much to clear up the pitching picture as opening day approaches. A fifth starter is needed, same as before. It wasn't going to be José Mesa Jr., designated for assignment yesterday, and Hunter Harvey was more of a temptation than a realistic consideration. Does Cobb actually increase the chances of Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr. making the club and staying with it? The Orioles...

Vielma: "I still feel confident that I can go out there and compete"

Vielma: "I still feel confident that I can go out there and compete"
SARASOTA, Fla. - The competition for the utility job with the Orioles increased today with Éngelb Vielma's arrival in camp. Meet the new guy. Same as the old guy - just late getting here. Vielma was detained in Venezuela while trying to get his visa. He flew into the area last night, took his physical today and waited for a chance to play. "It's definitely very frustrating because all I was thinking about was the opportunity that's been presented to me," he said via translator Ramón...

Orioles and Phillies lineups

Orioles and Phillies lineups
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are playing split-squad games today against the Phillies in Clearwater and the Twins in Sarasota. I'm covering the home nightcap, with the clubhouse opening to media at 1 p.m. Chris Davis is wearing the gray pants today as the only projected starter on the trip. Anthony Santander is playing right field after serving as the designated hitter yesterday against the Rays. Ryan Mountcastle is playing third base and Chance Sisco is catching. Former Orioles infielder Ryan...

There are five Orioles on this top 100, plus quick takes
When several top 100 prospects lists came out recently, the Orioles placed three players on the Baseball America top 100 with Austin Hays at No. 21, Chance Sisco at No. 68 and Ryan Mountcastle at No. 71. They placed two each on lists from ESPN, Baseball Prospectus and MLBPipeline.com. They placed just Hays at No. 90 on FanGraphs.com. Interestingly enough, when another top 100 list was published on the FanGraphs website yesterday, there were five Orioles ranked in the second 50 of that...

Once again, PECOTA not bullish on the O's, plus other notes

Once again, PECOTA not bullish on the O's, plus other notes
Would it surprise you to know that the New York Yankees have not won the American League East since the 2012 season? Baltimore, Boston and Toronto have all won the East since New York was last on top by two games over the Orioles, with 95 to 93 wins, in 2012. The Yankees would go on to beat the Orioles that fall in the AL Division Series. As a matter of fact, Baltimore, Boston and Toronto have all finished both first and last in the division since when New York last ruled the East. But...

Flaherty signs minor league deal with Phillies

Flaherty signs minor league deal with Phillies
The Ryan Flaherty era in Baltimore really has come to an end. Or maybe it's just been put on hold. The Phillies have signed Flaherty to a minor league deal, as first reported by ESPN.com. He'll go to spring training in Clearwater, Fla., and attempt to win a utility job. Selected from the Cubs organization in the December 2011 Rule 5 draft, Flaherty spent six seasons with the Orioles and batted .215/.284/.355 in 1,270 plate appearances. It wasn't about the bat. Flaherty gained manager Buck...

Leftovers for breakfast

Leftovers for breakfast
Included among the memorable nuggets to spill out of FanFest, along with the boulder-sized announcement that Manny Machado would play shortstop, was executive vice president Dan Duquette's confirmation that the Orioles have been in contact with utility infielder Ryan Flaherty. A season ticket holder brought up Flaherty's name during the Q&A session and Duquette noted the applause and the popularity of "Flash." Someone has to cover the four infield positions and, ideally, have the...

Machado playing shortstop in 2018 (and other notes)

Machado playing shortstop in 2018 (and other notes)
Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed today that Manny Machado will go into spring training as the starting shortstop and Tim Beckham will play third base. Showalter told the media assembled on the third floor of the Baltimore Convention Center for the annual FanFest. Showalter said the plan could change later, but this is how the players will be positioned. He indicated that Beckham preferred to stay at shortstop, but Machado wanted to move over and it's his natural position. More on that...
