It’s been a good week for the Nationals. It’s always nice to take two of three from the Yankees, but it’s especially nice to do so with your top prospect making his major league debut and leading the charge with other cornerstone young players.

Now the Nats welcome the Cubs for three games over this holiday weekend. Chicago is barely holding onto hope of a postseason berth, entering this series 9 ½ games back of the Brewers in the National League Central and five games back of the final NL Wild Card spot.

Jake Irvin looks to become the first Nationals pitcher to reach 10 wins this season when he takes the ball tonight. The right-hander will also try to continue a strong streak by Nats starters, who have combined to post a 1.94 ERA and 1.098 WHIP while striking out more than one batter per inning and never once allowing more than two earned runs over the last nine games.

Shota Imanaga will get the ball from Craig Counsell to oppose Irvin on the hill. The 30-year-old Japanese left-hander is in the running for NL Rookie of the Year with a 10-3 record and 3.08 ERA in 24 starts during an All-Star campaign.

LOS ANGELES – The Orioles and Dodgers have split the first two games of this three-game series and tonight's winner will take the series at Dodger Stadium.

Los Angeles (79-54, .594) has the best record in the major leagues and has won seven of nine, 13 of 18 and 16 of its last 23 games. In the 23 games, the Dodgers are scoring 5.1 runs per game with a team ERA of 3.19.

The Dodgers are 44-24 at home and 26-14 versus American League teams.

The O's lineup tonight is a look we've seen a lot versus right-handers with Colton Cowser leading off, Adley Rutschman catching and Gunnar Henderson at shortstop. Eloy Jiménez is the designated hitter and Cedric Mullins is back in center field and batting seventh.

The Orioles (77-57) begin play today one game behind the Yankees, who are off, for the AL East lead with 28 games remaining. The two games this series have been decided by three total runs. The O's have played a lot of close games lately, with seven of their past 10 decided by one or two runs. They are 4-3 in those contests.

LOS ANGELES – Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo, on the injured list since July 25 with a left elbow subluxation, had surgery today and will miss the rest of the 2024 season.

The O's, until this news, held out longshot hope he might return late this year and possibly for the postseason. 

But today he had successful left elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction with internal brace and flexor repair. 

The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister at Trinity Park Surgery Center in Arlington, Texas. 

Mateo has one more year of arbitration eligibility coming this winter and could be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.

It’s been a fun couple of nights at Nationals Park. Monday night saw the debut of Dylan Crews and the Yankees outplaying the home team during a tight, 5-2 win. Tuesday night saw Crews record his first hit, Andrés Chaparro record his first home run, Patrick Corbin outpitch Gerrit Cole and the Nats emerge with a tight, 4-2 win. The atmosphere in the ballpark has been outstanding, the kind of thing that used to be common around here but hasn’t been common for several years.

Now it’s the rubber game of the series, and a big start for MacKenzie Gore. It’s been a ragged summer for the young left-hander, but he hopes he turned a corner over the weekend in Atlanta, where he held the Braves to one run over six innings without issuing a walk. This is obviously a tough lineup Gore has to face tonight, but he’s unquestionably got better stuff than Corbin, who was hugely successful. It’s up to Gore to make his stuff work against Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Co.

The Nationals would love to give Gore some significant run support. It’s been a strange few days, because they’ve hit the ball hard quite a bit, and they’ve recorded four homers and four doubles, but they’re a staggering 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position. (The Yankees, by the way, are 0-for-13 in the series.) They’ll go up against left-hander Carlos Rodón, who has been hit-or-miss of late, and try to convert at least a few times in clutch situations to provide Gore some support.

The Nats did make a roster move this afternoon: Orlando Ribalta has been recalled from Triple-A Rochester, with Joan Adon placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder biceps strain. So it's a swap of right-handed relievers.

LOS ANGELES – Center fielder Cedric Mullins is back in the Orioles lineup tonight as they begin their road trip against the Dodgers.

Mullins left Friday's game early with left quad tightness and missed the last two games of the Houston series. He took batting practice before Sunday's game and will make the start tonight.

Ryan O'Hearn, who has not homered since July 20, gets the start at first base after Ryan Mountcastle went on the injured list Monday with a left wrist sprain.

With 30 games left in their regular season, the Orioles have three road trips remaining, the first beginning with their series-opener tonight at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers (78-53) have the best record in the major leagues and are 12-4 in their past 16 games. 

The hubbub of Monday night is gone, but that doesn’t mean there won’t still be juice in the ballpark tonight. The Yankees are still here, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are still here, Dylan Crews and James Wood are still here and there’s a juicy (if lopsided, on paper) pitching matchup on tap as well.

Patrick Corbin vs. Gerrit Cole. The guy who did pitch in relief in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series vs. the guy who did not pitch in relief in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. The guys whose careers have taken wildly different paths since that night.

Corbin is really facing a gantlet tonight in the Yankees lineup, though for whatever it’s worth he tossed a quality start last summer in the Bronx, allowing three runs over six innings to earn the win. Judge and Gleyber Torres each homered, but that’s all Corbin gave up during that game. It’s also worth noting he allowed one run over six innings to the Rockies last time out, earning career win No. 100.

Cole, meanwhile, seems to have found his groove after spending the season’s first 2 1/2 months on the injured list. He enters this one on a 12-inning scoreless streak, having shut out the Tigers and Guardians. He’ll be going up against a very young Nats lineup that now features Crews, Wood and CJ Abrams.

It’s a big night on South Capitol Street, and that would’ve already been the case without Dylan Crews crashing the proceedings. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and the Yankees are in town, and that would be the big storyline under any other circumstances. But now we’ve got the added drama of the latest top prospect to debut for the Nationals.

Crews, who is in right field, joins a Nats lineup that already features James Wood, CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. They’ll all be facing left-hander Nestor Cortes, who is having a decent but not great season. Cortes enters with a 4.00 ERA and 1.153 WHIP in 26 starts, his biggest issue an inability to keep the ball in the yard. Opponents have hit 21 homers off him, though only two in his last five starts. And in each of his last two starts, he’s tossed seven scoreless innings on three hits with zero walks. So the young Nationals have their work cut out for them. Crews, by the way, will bat second in his debut. (And for those who didn't hear the news Sunday night, Riley Adams was optioned to Triple-A Rochester to clear the roster spot for him.)

So does Mitchell Parker, who faces probably the toughest lineup he’s had to face yet as a big leaguer. The rookie lefty was really good against the Rockies last week (one run, five hits in seven innings) but in his previous start he was torched by the Phillies for nine runs in three-plus innings. Suffice it to say, the Yankees lineup bears more resemblance to the Phillies than the Rockies.

There are a few storm cells set to roll through the area this afternoon, but (fingers crossed) the forecast looks OK for this evening, setting up a big Monday at the ballpark.

Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Daniel Johnson is on the Orioles’ 24-hour taxi squad while center fielder Cedric Mullins is reevaluated for left quadriceps tightness.

Mullins exited Friday's game due to discomfort and so far he's avoided the injured list. Johnson was removed from Norfolk’s game after two at-bats that night, and he’s got a locker at Camden Yards in case Mullins’ quad doesn’t improve enough to let him play.

Johnson, also a left-handed bat, is hitting .267/.333/.479 with 17 doubles, a triple, 20 home runs and 70 RBIs in 98 games with Norfolk. He hasn’t played in the majors since 2021 with Cleveland.

The Orioles would need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move to accommodate him.

“A lot of at-bats,” Johnson said when asked to explain his success with the Tides. “Get a lot of at-bats, you can do a lot every single day. So just the ABs. It’s an opportunity.”

ATLANTA – Good morning from Truist Park, where the Nationals and Braves wrap up their weekend series with an extra-early, 12:05 p.m. first pitch today. It’s another “MLB Sunday Leadoff on Roku” game, so you’ll only be able to watch this game via streaming devices. Here’s how you can watch for free.

The Nats have lost two incredibly winnable games the last two nights – 3-2 in 10 innings, 4-2 in regulation – and they should be frustrated by the fact they didn’t win either of those games. They have a chance to rectify that today and finally clinch the season series over Atlanta, something, remarkably, they haven’t done since 2017.

It’s DJ Herz on the mound, and the rookie has been quite good since the All-Star break: a 3.07 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings. He faced the Braves in his second career start back in early June and did OK, allowing two runs over 4 1/3 innings, though he needed 87 pitches to do it. The lefty has come a long way since then and will look to continue the upward trend this afternoon.

The Nationals will be facing a familiar face in Reynaldo López, the one-time prospect-turned-All-Star who continues to enjoy a breakthrough season here in Atlanta with a 2.05 ERA and 1.195 WHIP in 20 starts. The right-hander gave up two runs (via solo homers by CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas) over six innings in a June 6 no-decision. Abrams is leading off today, but obviously Thomas is no longer here. Interesting to see Drew Millas behind the plate for this one, with Keibert Ruiz serving as designated hitter and Riley Adams sitting.

ATLANTA – There were a lot of encouraging things about Friday night’s game for the Nationals. Except for the one thing that matters more than anything else: the outcome. Their 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Braves was ugly, with CJ Abrams committing a throwing error to allow the winning run to score.

So, they’ll have to dust themselves off and try to get back on track tonight in the second game of the weekend series, hoping to score more than two runs this time. They’ll be facing a seemingly less daunting opposing pitcher in Charlie Morton, the 40-year-old right-hander with a 4.29 ERA. The Nats have roughed up Morton twice this season, scoring 13 runs on 19 hits in 10 2/3 scoreless innings. Abrams (4-for-9, two homers) has excellent numbers against him, though you have to also note the two others with awful career numbers against him: Luis García Jr. (2-for-16, seven strikeouts) and Joey Gallo (0-for-20, two walks, 16 strikeouts).

Jake Irvin has been outstanding in his two starts against Atlanta this season, totaling 12 scoreless innings with 14 strikeouts. The right-hander is still trying to right his wayward ship overall, though, having posted a 6.20 ERA over his last eight starts, victimized by a whopping 14 homers in the process.

The Nationals did make a roster move this afternoon, officially placing Alex Call on the 10-day injured list with a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his left foot. For now, his replacement is Drew Millas, giving the team three catchers through the rest of the weekend. We’ll have to see what they decide to do Monday when they promote Dylan Crews from Triple-A and have to remove someone from the roster to make room for the top prospect.

ATLANTA – There’s big news today about Dylan Crews, if you haven’t seen it yet, but the top prospect won’t be making his major league debut until Monday. Between now and then, the Nationals have a three-game series with the Braves this weekend, and that’s a challenge in itself, even if Atlanta has been dealing with a ton of injuries and is no longer a shoo-in to make the playoffs.

This is a big start for MacKenzie Gore, whose once-promising season has been slipping away over the last two months. In his last 10 starts, the left-hander is 1-5 with a 7.09 ERA, with an ugly 38-to-29 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s got to find a way to throw strikes tonight, but he’s also got to find a way to throw quality strikes, keep his pitch count down and at least get through five innings having given his team a chance.

The challenge is no easier for the Nationals at the plate, because they have to face Chris Sale. The likely National League Cy Young Award winner frontrunner at this point with a 14-3 record and league leading 2.62 ERA. One of those losses, though, did come to the Nats back on June 7, when Sale allowed only two runs over seven innings but was outdueled by Jake Irvin in a 2-1 victory.

It’s another surprisingly gorgeous August day here in the nation’s capital, where the home team has a shot at a series win if it can beat the Rockies again this afternoon. The Nationals won Wednesday night in convincing fashion, thanks to an effective and efficient start from Mitchell Parker and a consistent offensive attack highlighted by Luis García Jr.’s three-run homer.

Can Patrick Corbin duplicate Parker’s seven innings of one-run ball? That might be a bit too much to ask out of the veteran left-hander, who for the sixth straight start will be taking the mound in search of his 100th career win. (He entered the season with 97, by the way.) Corbin did enjoy back-to-back quality starts a month ago against the Reds and Padres. In four starts since then, he sports a 10.38 ERA, with 21 runs allowed in only 17 1/3 innings.

The Nats did a nice job at the plate Wednesday night against Rockies right-hander Tanner Gordon. They’ll try to keep that up today against right-hander Cal Quantrill, who did toss a quality start against them two months ago at Coors Field. Quantrill has struggled since then, though, with a 7.23 ERA over his last eight games, with 10 homers surrendered in that time.

The Nationals have scored 14 runs over their last six games. It will not surprise you to learn they’ve gone 1-5 in those games. Scoring runs is good. Not scoring runs is bad. It would really help their chances tonight if they could score some runs.

The Nats will be facing a Rockies starter who has made only six big league appearances before, four of them losses, none of them wins. Right-hander Tanner Gordon is 0-4 with a 7.00 ERA, having allowed 40 batters to reach base in 27 innings, giving up seven homers in the process. A sixth-round pick of the Braves in the 2019 Draft, he throws a low-90s fastball, a slider and a changeup. This is someone the Nationals should believe they can hit tonight.

Mitchell Parker, meanwhile, starts for the home team. The rookie left-hander put together back-to-back quality starts against the Brewers and Angels, then got absolutely roughed up by the Phillies for nine runs in three-plus innings last week. That one start raised his ERA from 3.83 to 4.44. He really needs to get himself back on track tonight.

NEW YORK – Another injury is forcing the Orioles to change their rotation and curse their luck.

Zach Eflin, with four quality starts and wins in his four appearances with the Orioles, went on the 15-day injured list this afternoon with right shoulder inflammation. Left-hander Cade Povich was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.

Eflin felt some soreness after his last outing and it didn’t improve to the point where he could stay on the roster. The starter for Wednesday is TBD, with manager Brandon Hyde saying Corbin Burnes wouldn’t get the assignment on normal rest.

Povich started Saturday, allowed two runs in a career-high 6 1/3 innings and was optioned. He’s eligible to return because he’s replacing an injured player.

The Orioles also placed left-hander Keegan Akin on the paternity list today and he’s left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their second baby.

The last week was not especially kind to the Nationals, who went 2-4 on their road trip to Baltimore and Philadelphia, at times looking overmatched by two of the best teams in baseball. The good news: They’re back home and facing a team with a worse record in the Rockies. At 46-79, Colorado is tied with Miami for the worst record in the National League, with only the wretched White Sox even worse than them across the majors.

The Nats still need to play well the next three days, of course, and they’ll hope DJ Herz can keep up what he’s been doing the last few weeks on the mound. After a midseason hiccup, Herz has gotten back on track, with a 3.04 ERA over his last five starts, including a quality start last week at Camden Yards. He struggled a bit at Coors Field earlier this summer, though, lasting just 3 2/3 innings in the thin mountain air.

The Nationals did not see Austin Gomber in that late-June series in Colorado. The left-hander enters with a 4.82 ERA and 24 homers allowed in 125 innings but did produce quality starts in two of his last three outings. The Nats have a big bat back in the lineup, with Joey Gallo finally activated off the 10-day injured list after a two-week rehab stint at Triple-A Rochester. He replaces Travis Blankenhorn, who was optioned to Triple-A.

The Nats also activated Robert Garcia off the bereavement list and optioned Orlando Ribalta to Rochester, giving them three lefties in the bullpen for the first time this season.

NEW YORK – Austin Slater is leading off tonight at Citi Field and Eloy Jiménez is the designated hitter, as the Orioles go right-handed heavy with their lineup against the Mets.

Colton Cowser is in center field, one of three left-handers to avoid the bench, and Anthony Santander is in right.

Trevor Rogers is making his fourth start with the Orioles. He’s 0-2 with a 7.53 ERA and 1.884 WHIP in only 14 1/3 innings.

Overall, Rogers is 2-11 this season with a 4.89 ERA and 1.571 WHIP in 24 starts. He faced the Mets on July 21 and allowed one earned run and two total in 4 2/3 innings. He has a 3.35 ERA in nine career starts against them and a 2.73 ERA in six starts at Citi Field.

Pete Alonso is 3-for-20 with two home runs.

The Orioles elevated Eloy Jiménez to the cleanup spot for this afternoon’s series finale against the Red Sox.

Jarren Duran robbed Jiménez of a home run last night with a leaping catch at the center field fence in the ninth inning. Jiménez is 14-for-33 (.424) with the Orioles.

Adley Rutschman returns to the lineup after pinch-hitting last night. He began the past two games on the bench due to lower back discomfort.

Ryan O’Hearn is in right field and batting second. Anthony Santander isn’t in the lineup.

Gunnar Henderson, in the third slot again today, is batting .346 against fastballs this month compared to his .262 mark in July.

PHILADELPHIA – The Nationals need one today. Ideally, it would be a total team effort: Strong starting pitching, a lot of run support and a shutdown bullpen. But honestly, it doesn’t matter how they get it. They just need to win.

Luckily, the guy that gives them the best chance to do that is taking the mound this afternoon. Jake Irvin makes his 26th start in search of his team-high 10th win of the season. He’s coming off six strong innings against the Orioles on Tuesday, during which he only allowed two runs. But now he’ll face a Phillies team that he’s 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA against.

The Phillies are sending Taijuan Walker to the mound for the finale. The veteran right-hander is 3-4 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.509 WHIP in 11 starts this year. He hasn’t completed six innings since May and has allowed three or more runs in four of his last five starts.

If there ever was a time to score some runs this weekend, it’s now.

PHILADELPHIA – “This one I'm going to flush.”

That was manager Davey Martinez after last night’s 13-3 loss to the Phillies. And yeah, let’s forget about that one.

The Nationals look to bounce back tonight with Patrick Corbin on the mound. There are only a handful of starts left for the veteran left-hander in a Nats uniform, so we don’t need to revisit all of the numbers. But it is worth noting he held the Phillies to four runs over six innings with six strikeouts in a tough-luck 4-0 loss on April 5. He doesn’t have a lot of success at Citizens Bank Park, however, with a 6.50 ERA in nine starts.

After struggling with Zack Wheeler last night, the Nats get a chance to face Aaron Nola tonight. The veteran right-hander is 11-6 with a 3.60 ERA on the year. He held the Nats scoreless over 5 ⅔ innings in that same April 5 game in D.C. Then he kept them to two runs in seven innings here on May 19.

Also, the Nats announced earlier this afternoon that Jordan Weems has cleared outright waivers and they have assigned him outright to Triple-A Rochester.
