Nats set sights on power bat, Draft Lottery

The Nationals’ No. 1 need this offseason is no secret. They need a power bat, ideally at first base but potentially at another position if there’s a good match.

This team ranked last in the National League with 135 home runs. It ranked second-to-last in home runs by first basemen with 14. The only returning candidates to play that position are Juan Yepez and Andres Chaparro, who combined for 10 homers over 381 plate appearances.

If they want to put forth a more productive lineup next season, it’s the obvious upgrade that must occur this winter.

To date, they haven’t upgraded at first base. Nor have they upgraded at any position so far during an awfully quiet offseason. The good news: Nobody has.

Not a single free agent first baseman has signed anywhere yet. And the list includes a good number of prominent names just waiting to be courted and locked up.

Free agent options aplenty if Nats pursue first baseman

It doesn’t take tremendous insight to figure out the Nationals’ No. 1 need this winter. They need to add power to a lineup that simply hasn’t had enough of that in recent years.

The Nats ranked 29th in the majors in home runs each of the last two seasons, and their total actually went down from 2023 (151) to 2024 (135). In today’s game, that simply won’t cut it. Six of baseball’s top-seven home run-hitting clubs made the playoffs this year, and none of the bottom six did.

Club officials do have hope for an increase in power production from several key young players, especially James Wood and Dylan Crews as they embark on their first full big league seasons. And if Brady House arrives as expected, the 2021 first round pick should provide some much needed slugging potential as well.

But make no mistake, the Nationals also have to acquire power from outside the organization this offseason. And that has to come from someone closer to the prime of his career than Joey Gallo, Eddie Rosario or Jesse Winker was upon their bargain-basement acquisitions last offseason.

If Mike Rizzo truly has the green light from ownership to pursue bigger name free agents, it stands to reason the longtime general manager will be making his pitch to a number of prominent sluggers seeking employment. And in a perfect world, the slugger the Nats wind up getting would play first base.

Christian Walker became a top talent in Arizona and now plays in World Series

In most World Series we can probably find an ex-Oriole or two or three to watch play on baseball’s biggest stage. Among the former Birds in this World Series is one of the real good guys, Arizona first baseman Christian Walker. He has found a home in Arizona since they acquired him in March of 2017 and the last two years he has hit 69 homers.

While he has not had a great offensive performance this postseason, he is a middle-of-the-order fixture for the 2023 National League champs. When the Orioles were in Arizona in early September, I caught up with Walker, someone I had interview numerous times when he was trying to work his way through the O’s minors.

Baltimore drafted him in round four of 2012 out of the University of South Carolina, where he was on two NCAA championship clubs. He was often ranked among the O’s top 20 prospects and went as high as their No. 3 prospect in 2015 via Baseball America.

But with the Orioles he had Chris Davis in front of him at first base and when the club signed Davis to the long-term contract before the 2016 season that kind of sealed his fate with the organization. Walker wound up getting just 27 at-bats with the big club over parts of the 2014-2015 seasons. After the Davis contract was final, the club moved him to the outfield at Triple-A for the 2016 season. But that did not lead him back to Baltimore.

The Orioles DFA'd him on Feb. 21, 2017 and four days later Atlanta added him via waivers. About 10 days later, Cincinnati added him and about three weeks later, on March 28, 2017, Arizona claimed him off waivers. Yep, he was with four teams in about six weeks.

This, that and the other

A World Series that supposedly was going to be boring and a ratings killer began last night with Corey Seager’s game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Adolis García’s walk-off homer in the 11th that gave the Rangers a 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

The first extra-inning game of the 2023 postseason, and it was an instant classic.

The Diamondbacks’ lineup included first baseman Christian Walker, the Orioles’ fourth-round draft pick in 2012 out of the University of South Carolina. A delayed success story.

Walker appeared in only 13 games in 2014-15, his path blocked by expensive veteran Chris Davis and prospect Trey Mancini. He made only six starts at first.

The Braves claimed Walker off waivers in February 2017, and the Reds claimed him a month later. Arizona claimed him three weeks after that.

O's drop trip opener, Henderson's great double play, Walker remembers time with O's

PHOENIX - On night one of a three-city, nine-game road trip, the O's offense fell flat but Gunnar Henderson reminded us why he has become the leading contender in the eyes of many for American League Rookie of the Year.

Playing shortstop, Henderson, running with his back to the infield, made an over-the-shoulder catch in the last of the fourth and then threw home to double up Corbin Carroll, who tagged up at third and tried to score.

One Rookie of the Year candidate nabbed another.

“He’s one of the best rookies in the game right now," O's starter Cole Irvin said. "He’s just exciting to watch. Brings the energy, plays hard. I think if there is any time Gunnar showed who he is, it’s when he could have had the cycle (needing only a single to complete the cycle, Henderson nonetheless went to second on his hit into the right field corner in the Orioles' 12-1 win over the Athletics on Aug. 20). He plays hard and plays the right way. He’s definitely awesome to have."

Henderson made the play yesterday sound easy. It was far from that.

Rutschman makes catching debut in GCL

Rutschman makes catching debut in GCL
PHOENIX - The hype over Adley Rutschman isn't going to subside or slow as long as he continues down this path. And that's fine with the Orioles, who are enjoying every step of it. Rutschman made his catching debut today in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League after serving as the designated hitter on Saturday in his first game. He went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored in the GCL Orioles' 9-1 victory over the GCL Braves. The Braves didn't attempt a stolen base against him. The...

Surprise! Unheralded players are making their marks, raising some eyebrows
In 2011, outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. was a first-round draft pick by the Blue Jays. Then, after hitting. .268 in seven minor league seasons for the Blue Jays, he was traded March 8 to Baltimore for international slot money the Orioles weren't going to use anyway. When he arrived in spring training in Sarasota, Fla., he was projected as outfield depth on an Orioles roster that was loaded with outfield prospects making impressions. Now, six weeks into the season, Smith is one of the Orioles'...

This, that and the other
The Orioles are sending Ubaldo Jiménez to the mound tonight to complete their series in Toronto and their six-game road trip. They're back home on Friday. Chris Tillman beat them to Baltimore. Manager Buck Showalter told reporters yesterday that he sent Tillman ahead of the team in preparation for Friday's scheduled start against the Rays, but it's tentative with the right-hander's wife, Christina, due with their first baby. Dylan Bundy, slated for Saturday afternoon's start, would...

The ongoing tale of three once highly ranked O's prospects

The ongoing tale of three once highly ranked O's prospects
Non-roster outfielders Logan Schafer, David Washington and Chris Dickerson are still with the Orioles at major league spring training. So are Rule 5 pick outfielders Anthony Santander and Aneury Tavárez. But Dariel Álvarez is not. He was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk yesterday. It appears that Álvarez has fallen well down the depth chart in the outfield. He was sent to minor league camp after going 0-for-11 in Grapefruit League games. The competition for the final outfield roster spots...

Reviewing yesterday's news and notes

Reviewing yesterday's news and notes
SARASOTA, Fla. - Will today bring a sense of calm to the Orioles' camp? Can they go an entire day without an injury or a roster move or something that leaves the media scrambling while ignoring the game that's unfolding in front of it? Just off the top of my head, we found out yesterday that Michael Bourn broke the ring finger on his right hand while trying to catch a football and could be sidelined for a month, Welington Castillo had neck spasms because he slept wrong, Chris Dickerson fouled...

Wrapping up a 6-2 loss

Wrapping up a 6-2 loss
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Orioles will play their spring home opener on Sunday with a .500 record. The Pirates hit back-to-back home runs off Parker Bridwell in the bottom of the eighth inning and cruised to a 6-2 win at LECOM Park. The Orioles got a run back in the ninth on Robert Andino's fielder's choice grounder. The Pirates failed to turn a double play on three tries in the inning. Bridwell struck out the first two batters before an infield hit and Chris Bostick's two-run shot gave the...

Christian Walker claimed by Braves (O's down 3-1)
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Orioles have lost outfielder/first baseman Christian Walker on a waiver claim to the Braves. Walker, 25, was designated for assignment on Tuesday to make room for left-hander Richard Bleier on the 40-man roster. The Orioles wanted to pass him through waivers and keep him in the organization. Walker, formerly a fourth-round pick out of the University of South Carolina, was named the organization's minor league Player of the Year in 2014. He appeared in 13 games with the...

Bourn could miss a month with broken finger

Bourn could miss a month with broken finger
BRADENTON, Fla. - The injuries are piling up for the Orioles, with outfielder Michael Bourn the latest player housed in the training room. Bourn broke the ring finger on his right hand yesterday while trying to catch a football as part of his workout at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. Manager Buck Showalter said Bourn could be out four weeks. Players often toss around a football before batting practice on the road or near the conclusion of their workout. Bourn jammed the finger and X-rays...

Nuño and Bleier hoping to head north with Orioles
SARASOTA, Fla. - Pitchers Vidal Nuño and Richard Bleier and outfielder Michael Bourn reported to Orioles camp this morning, the three newest additions to a clubhouse that still has a few empty lockers. Let's see what today brings besides rain and high winds. Two of those lockers belonged to left-hander T.J. McFarland and outfielder/first baseman Christian Walker, who have been designated for assignment and could return if they clear waivers. Nuño has joined his fifth organization since...

Britton scratched from intrasquad game (plus other notes)
SARASOTA, Fla. - Closer Zach Britton has been scratched from Wednesday's intrasquad game with symptoms of a possible left oblique injury, according to manager Buck Showalter. Showalter said the move is being made for precautionary reasons and suggested that Britton could pitch if the Orioles had started the regular season. They're not taking any chances with him in February. Britton was supposed to pitch in the same group as starter Wade Miley, Dylan Bundy, Mychal Givens and Jed Bradley....

Orioles interrupt intrasquad by trading for Bleier (updated)
SARASOTA, Fla. - Christian Walker was listed as the first baseman and cleanup hitter for the visiting team in today's intrasquad game, but he never took the field. David Washington replaced him in the bottom of the first inning and lined a single into center field off Logan Verrett leading off the top of the second. There was a good reason for Walker's removal from the lineup. He was designated for assignment to make room for left-hander Richard Bleier, acquired from the Yankees today for a...

Ondrusek sidelined with ankle injury (plus more notes)
SARASOTA, Fla. - Reliever Logan Ondrusek may not pitch in Wednesday's intrasquad game after rolling his right ankle yesterday during a drill. He's been walking with a limp and continues to receive treatment. Ondrusek was supposed to be on the same team as starter Wade Miley, Dylan Bundy, Zach Britton, Mychal Givens and Jed Bradley. Ondrusek, 32, said the injury occurred as he tried to avoid running into a teammate. "It's a little sore," he said. "It's kind of a fluke little thing. Trying...

More Ynoa and Mancini on possibility of playing outfield

More Ynoa and Mancini on possibility of playing outfield
With the Orioles completing another cash transaction with the Mets yesterday, acquiring young right-hander Gabriel Ynoa, is it safe to assume that executive vice president Dan Duquette is focused only on finding another outfielder? Don't get too comfortable with that notion. Duquette could add a veteran starter - the preference is still on a minor league deal, though it's not the only avenue - and strengthen the rotation's insurance in case of an injury. To project Triple-A Norfolk's...

Tillman offers advice to Givens regarding WBC
The Orioles are down to four players committed to play in the World Baseball Classic after outfielder Hyun Soo Kim reportedly withdrew his name from the South Korea roster. One of them received some advice from the staff ace during last week's minicamp in Sarasota. Chris Tillman, who lives about 10 minutes from the Ed Smith Stadium complex, showed up all three days to continue his workouts and to watch the young pitchers throw their bullpen sessions. He also wanted to chat with reliever Mychal...

A few notes from the first day of minicamp
SARASOTA, Fla. - New Orioles minor league pitching coordinator John Wasdin is at minicamp this week. The club hasn't announced his hiring, but he's assisting with the workouts at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. No one threw in the bullpen today, but there will be numerous sessions on Tuesday. Outfielder Joey Rickard and catcher Chance Sisco are working out in California with vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson. Rickard has told the Orioles that his right thumb is much...
