#TBT to "Nationals Classics": Rendon has record-breaking day in Nats' slugfest over Mets

On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in our nation's capital, the Nationals put on a hitting clinic against the Mets pitching staff that ended in a 23-5 victory, making up for dropping the first two games of the series. What fans will remember most is the All-Star performance by third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Rendon came out of an early season slump when he went 6-for-6 (including two singles and a double), blasted three homers and collected a career-high 10 RBIs (his previous career high was four RBIs, which he did four times).

Once you pick your jaws off the floor, here's how his record-setting game stacks up in baseball history:

* He became the second player in major league history to have such a game, the other being Walker Cooper of the Reds, who went 6-for-7 with three home runs and 10 RBIs against the Cubs on July 6, 1949.

* His 10 RBIs set a Nationals/Expos record for RBIs in a game and he became the 13th player in major league history with at least 10 RBIs in a game (the record is 12). They were also the most by a player in a major league game since Aug. 21, 2007 (Garret Anderson).

* The three homers were his first of the season and he became the fifth National with a three-homer game, joining Bryce Harper (May 6, 2015), Ryan Zimmerman (May 29, 2013), Adam Dunn (July 7, 2010) and Alfonso Soriano (April 21, 2006).

The accolades don't end there. The Nats, as a whole, set multiple records :

* Nats/Expos record for runs in a game (23)
* Nats record for home runs in a game (seven, which, if you remember, was broken on July 27 at the Braves with eight home runs)
* Nats record for RBIs in a single month (Zimmerman, 29)
* Tied Nats record for hits in a game (23)

Thursday, Dec. 14, 10:30 a.m. - It was the situation every ballplayer dreams of: tie game, full count with two outs, bases loaded, bottom of the ninth. Originally trailing 4-2 to the Phillies at the start of the ninth inning on Aug. 19, 2011, former Phillie Jayson Werth started a six-run rally with an 11-pitch at-bat to knot the game at 4-4. And once again, Zimmerman answered the call with a walk-off grand slam off future National Ryan Madson to end an exciting 8-4 comeback victory over the Phillies. It was Zimmerman's second career game-ending grand slam.

Tuesday, Dec. 19, 9 a.m. - The Nats' 2009 season got off to a rough start, but they closed out the 103-loss campaign on a positive note - a seven-game win streak capped by Alberto Gonzalez's 15th-inning, game-winning RBI to beat the Braves 2-1 on Oct. 4. In the longest game since the team moved from Montreal, the win made the Nats the first team to close a season with seven wins after starting 0-7.
