The Orioles run of excellent starting pitching came to an end tonight as Jeremy Guthrie was touched for six runs as the Yankees beat the Orioles, 11-3 in front of a sellout crowd of 48,775 at Camden Yards. Jorge Posada's two-run single in the first gave New York the lead and Robinson Cano added a two-run homer in the fifth as Guthrie gave up six runs and seven hits over five innings. Guthrie falls to 10-14, 3.92 and failed to pitch six or more innings for the first time in 12 starts. He is...

The Nationals look to salvage game three of their series with the Phillies Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. They will have to do it with a pitcher who has yet to win a major league game and who faces a veteran hurler that has not lost a game since July 21. Right-hander Yunesky Maya has had a tough early inning to get through in his first two starts and then has been able to settle down. Last time out in Atlanta, he allowed four runs in the second inning, including two balk calls, but...

Tonight's attendance: 48,775, the second sellout of the year. Robert Andino has homered again, connecting off CC Sabathia in the bottom of the fifth inning and reducing the Yankees' lead to 6-3. He also extended his hitting streak to five games. He's only appeared in six with the Orioles. Don't even pretend that you envisioned an Andino home run in September while this season played out. Now you've got two of them. Heck, I didn't think we'd see Andino all year, but Julio Lugo's...

Jeremy Guthrie had been pitching so well, but when he gave up a two-run homer to Robinson Cano in the 5th, New York moved ahead 6-2. They have scored in four of their five at bats vs. the O's righty, who has allowed six runs on seven hits through five frames. Guthrie was 7-2, 2.29 in 11 starts since the All-Star break, but entered with a 3-8, 5.33 mark in 13 career starts vs. New York. It feels like a long time since he has given up six runs in a start, but it happened on August 18 and 24th...

The Orioles just introduced first-round pick Manny Machado to the Camden Yards crowd after the top of the third inning. Joe Jordan, director of scouting, stood on the field with Machado, who acknowledged the fans' applause with a wave and a smile. If the Orioles are going to have 10 quality starts in their last 11 games, Jeremy Guthrie will have to blank the Yankees over the next three innings. He's allowed three runs and four hits in three innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. He's...

Is there some bad blood now festering between the O's and Yankees? Derek Jeter was hit to start this game. This ball actually did hit him. No, really it did. Later in the inning, when Alex Rodriguez scored the second run on a Jorge Posada two-run single, he crossed home plate and kept running. Right toward the O's dugout. I mean he got within a few feet of it and was close enough to high five Buck Showalter. That had to get under the Orioles skin, I would think and hope. Seemed over...

Jeremy Guthrie's first pitch of the game drilled Derek Jeter on the left elbow. Jeter tried to spin away from it. No such luck. Jeter dropped his bat and trotted to first base. The benches and bullpens didn't empty. But the crowd certainly reacted. At least this one was legit. No foul ball. Keep in mind that Guthrie has hit 14 batters this year, second to A.J. Burnett (16). He might be a little amped up. Update: Guthrie struck out the next two batters, walked Alex Rodriguez and gave up a...

Another Jake Arrieta update: The rookie is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. Team physician Dr. Andrew Cosgarea will handle the surgery. Arrieta wants to remain with the team, though he might not travel. "I think it's going to be for the best," Arrieta said. "I've talked to the doctors and trainers and we decided I'm going to go ahead and get that bone spur taken out. Probably going to do it Wednesday, just get it over and done with...

With the Orioles deciding today that Jake Arrieta's season is over, here are his Major League numbers in some detail from this year. Arrieta told reporters today he has a bone spur in his right elbow, it does not cause him pain or any problems when pitching, he said, but he will undergo a procedure to remove it and Arrieta will not pitch any more this year. *Arrieta was 6-6, 4.66 in 18 Orioles starts. *Over 100 1/3 innings, he allowed 106 hits, 9 homers, 48 walks, had 52 strikeouts and a...

Manager Buck Showalter said he was still 50-50 whether he would shut down Jake Arrieta until the club decided to schedule an MRI on the rookie's right elbow, which followed his admission that he felt "a little tightness" after his last start. Arrieta was fine the next day, but the Orioles decided to be cautious. "He's 20, 23 innings over where he's been. He's in a good spot and I think it's best to stop his innings right now," Showalter said. "We looked at all the variables involved...
