Orioles left-hander Keegan Akin makes his first major league start today and he's trying to fill the role of stopper for a team that's reeling.
Akin was used in relief twice before today's assignment. He's allowed three runs and two hits in 3 1/3 innings.
With openings in the rotation created by injury (Wade LeBlanc) and trade (Tommy Milone), Akin has a chance to receive an extended look as a starter over the final month of the season.
Pedro Severino will set the target for Akin, while Chance Sisco serves as the designated hitter.
José Iglesias
Blue Jays right-hander Chase Anderson has made four starts in his first season with the club and allowed six earned runs and 17 hits in 14 2/3 innings. He's a reverse-splits guy, with right-handed hitters batting .273/.330/.480 in 169 games and left-handers batting .221/.296/.380.
Anderson has never faced the Orioles, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games. Iglesias is 3-for-9 against him.
Toronto is attempting to complete its second four-game sweep of the Orioles since 2018.
The Orioles aren't listing their starters for the two-game series against the Mets that begins Tuesday night at Camden Yards. Asher Wojciechowski and John Means would be slotted in those spots, but it isn't official.
