Reliever Isaac Mattson has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and heads to the Orioles bullpen as they begin their final series of the year tonight in Toronto.
Mattson, acquired from the Angels in the Dylan Bundy trade, has made three appearances with the Orioles and allowed three runs and three hits in three innings, with four walks and three strikeouts.
Left-hander Alexander Wells, who held the Red Sox to one run in six innings last night, was optioned to Norfolk. He wasn't going to pitch in this series and the Orioles need an extra reliever.
Mattson's three appearances came on May 7, July 3 and Aug. 7.
In 18 games with Norfolk, Mattson accumulated a 6.23 ERA and 1.731 WHIP over 17 1/3 innings. He walked six batters and struck out 24.
Thomas Eshelman will be first on the mound in a bullpen game. He's made eight appearances with the Orioles, including five starts, and allowed 20 runs and 31 hits in 25 innings.
Eshelman's last appearance on Sunday consisted of only one scoreless inning. His first outing of 2021 came in a June 18 start against the Blue Jays and he allowed one run and three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a home run.
Tyler Nevin is in left field again tonight.
