Revisiting our 2021 season predictions

Revisiting our 2021 season predictions
Predicting how a baseball season is going to play out is no easy task. We've been trying to do it around here for years, and though we sometimes get a few things right, we're usually wrong with much more frequency. And never have we been more wrong than we were this season. Not that my colleagues on the Nationals beat were alone in that regard. Seriously, how many of you out there predicted they'd lose 97 games? (If you just raised your hand, you're lying.) Nobody expected the kind of...

2021 Nats media season predictions

2021 Nats media season predictions
The day has come at last. The 2021 baseball season begins today. All 30 clubs are scheduled to play, including the Nationals in tonight's nationally televised opener against the Mets. Fans will be in attendance everywhere, 5,000 of them here. Alas, five members of the Nats' expected opening night roster will not be there after one tested positive for COVID-19 and four others were deemed close contacts to him. It turns today into more of a bittersweet event than a full-on celebration of...

2020 Nats media season predictions

2020 Nats media season predictions
The 2020 Major League Baseball season begins tonight, and did you ever think those words would mean what they do right now? This promises to be a season unlike any other, and we don't know yet if that will be for positive reasons, negative reasons or a little of each. It may be different, but that doesn't mean it won't include a few familiar traditions. Like this one. For 11 seasons now, members of the Nationals beat have graciously agreed to make season predictions, publish them and then...

2019 Nats media season predictions

2019 Nats media season predictions
Hey, do you know what today is? Yes, of course you do. And because you know it's opening day, you also know it's media prediction day! Ah yes, media prediction day, when my colleagues and I make complete fools of ourselves (some more than others) in trying to guess how the Nationals' season is going to play out. This is now the 10th consecutive year we've done this, via three different media outlets. And our pool of participants has both grown and changed dramatically in that time. We've...

2019 MLB predictions

2019 MLB predictions
The countdown is on. We are now just shy of 24 hours from opening day across Major League Baseball. (Let's just forget the Athletics and Mariners already played two regular season games in Japan last week, cause it only makes things more confusing.) After an agonizing winter and spring waiting for free agents to sign, at last we can watch and write about what's actually taking place on the field. If you're looking for our annual Nationals media season predictions, you're going to have to...

2018 Nats media season predictions

2018 Nats media season predictions
So we always run this feature on opening day. It's a tradition, now in its ninth consecutive season, spanning three different websites. The idea is to reveal these predictions just before the Nationals take the field for their first game of the season. Just one problem: They're not playing today. (Thanks, Cincinnati weather!) Well, rather than postpone the publication of this season's media predictions - and thus have to come up with some other story idea I never planned for - I made the...

2018 MLB predictions

2018 MLB predictions
The long wait is over. After a torturous offseason defined not by the free agents who were signed but the free agents who weren't signed, the 2018 major league season has arrived at last. Spring training has wrapped up in Florida and Arizona. Teams have now scattered throughout the country to begin the regular season, and 15 games are on the slate Thursday. (We'll see how many of those are actually played, though, with rain a factor in several cities, most notably Cincinnati, where the...

2017 MLB predictions

2017 MLB predictions
And so the time has come. Baseball season begins today for the Yankees, Rays, Giants, Diamondbacks, Cubs and Cardinals. It begins Monday for everybody else, including the Nationals. Which means it's time for some predictions. Don't worry, our annual Nats beat writer predictions will be posted Monday morning, an opening day tradition. For now, you'll just have to be satisfied with my own personal league-wide predictions. Who's going to win each division? Who's going to capture the wild...

2016 MLB predictions

2016 MLB predictions
The time has arrived at last: It's opening day for Major League Baseball! OK, so the Nationals (like most clubs) don't open until Monday, when they face the Braves in Atlanta. But for the first time, there are three MLB games on the Sunday slate (Cardinals-Pirates, Blue Jays-Rays, Mets-Royals) so the season does officially get underway today. Which means it's time to make some predictions. What follows are purely my own thoughts. For those who have been reading me over the years and are...
