Matusz interviewed, and upcoming promotions (with Guthrie update)

Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz, who will be in Baltimore this weekend for FanFest, was interviewed by phone earlier today on the Scott Garceau and Anita Marks Show on MASN and 105.7 The Fan. Matusz would like the Orioles to sign veteran left-hander Erik Bedard, who remains on the free-agent market and continues to draw interest. "That would be another great addition if we could end up landing him," Matusz said. "That's a guy that I could look up to, a veteran left-handed pitcher, someone I could learn from." Matusz reminded us that he faced Kevin Millwood during his rookie campaign and posted the victory. I had to look it up. He allowed four runs in seven innings in a 5-4 win over the Rangers on Sept. 5 in his next-to-last start of the season. "He's a guy that I've watched when I was younger, and obviously he's done a lot of good things in his career," Matusz said. "To be able to meet him and work with him in spring training is pretty exciting for me. I think it will help out a lot of the young guys to be able to work with a veteran like Kevin." Meanwhile, the Orioles' promotions for 2010 will include a Matt Wieters bobblehead doll giveaway, a replica Brooks Robinson jersey, a series of three mini-bobblehead dolls featuring outfielders Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones and Nick Markakis, four cap giveaway nights and the return of T-Shirt Tuesdays. The Orioles will honor the 40th anniversary of the 1970 world championship team with a variety of events and giveaways this season. On June 26, the club will hold an on-field celebration featuring numerous members of the '70 champs before its game against the Nationals. The following day, the first 20,000 fans 15 and over will receive a 1970 O's 40th Anniversary cap. And the first 25,000 fans 21 and over will receive the Robinson replica jersey on July 17. The 2110 Eutaw Street promotion returns for five dates: May 16, June 27, July 24, Aug. 8 and Sept. 4. Pitcher Jeremy Guthrie submitted a salary figure of $3.625 million today, and the Orioles countered at $2.3 million. The two sides will go to arbitration next month if they can't reach an agreement. Guthrie made $650,000 last season. Major props to the Double-A Bowie Baysox, who have joined the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to assist the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. The Baysox will raffle two season tickets for the 2010 season, with all proceeds going toward UNICEF's relief efforts for children in Haiti. Fans can visit http://baysox.com/merchandise/?item_id=3052&cat=174 to purchase the tickets, which cost $10 apiece. The raffle runs through Jan. 29. The winner will receive two lower-reserved tickets for all 71 Baysox home games. The prize is valued at more than $1,100, and the winner will be announced on Feb. 5.
