It started with an errant pitch. A pitcher missed his spot by several inches and hit a batter.
When Joba Chamberlain plunked Adam Jones with one out and no one on in the eighth inning yesterday, it was the start of a big Orioles rally. It was a big mistake by Chamberlain. You can't hit a batter to fuel a rally leading by three with no one on base.
Down 6-3, the Orioles went on to score four times, the last three on Delmon Young's pinch-hit, bases-loaded double as the O's comeback stunned Detroit in Game 2 of the American League Division Series.
They taught us that a walk is as good as a hit in Little League. So a hit by pitch must work, too.
Jones was asked if that was one of the biggest hit by pitches of his career.
"One of them. For sure," Jones said. "Man, this is the postseason, only the second time here. If it's inside and it's going to hit me, I ain't moving. Believe that. Take your base and pass the baton."
The Orioles have had their share of comeback wins this year and yesterday was the latest and one of the greatest.
How do the Orioles keep doing it?
"The makeup of this team," Jones said. "We're down, we know we are a bloop and a blast away from getting back in any ballgame. The guy that did the most work was (Kevin) Gausman. They scored five and then he goes three-plus innings and holds it intact."
Now it's on to Detroit for Game 3 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers were 46-35 at home this season while the Orioles went 46-35 on the road.
"Well, we have to go into a hostile environment in Detroit," Jones said. "It will be about 20 degrees colder. But the grind is still the same. Let's go out there and play good baseball."
Young etched his name is Orioles postseason lore with that clutch double. He is 11-for-21 as a pinch-hitter this season.
"He's been there before. Experience and understanding the situation will pretty much tell a lot about a man," Jones said.
The O's top hitters in this series:
* Nelson Cruz is 4-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs.
* Alejandro De Aza is 3-for-8 with two RBIs.
* J.J. Hardy is 2-for-6 with a homer and two RBIs.
* Nick Markakis is 3-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs.
* Steve Pearce is 3-for-8 with one RBI.
After batting just .228 in six regular season games against Detroit, the Orioles are batting .309 (21-for-68) in this series and they are 9-for-20 (.450) batting with runners in scoring position.
The Game 3 pitching matchup features Bud Norris (15-8, 3.65 ERA) against 2012 Cy Young Award winner David Price (15-12, 3.26 ERA).
Norris finished the regular season strong, going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in five September starts. The right-hander was even better over his last three outings, going 3-0 and allowing three runs in 18 1/3 innings for a 1.47 ERA.
However, Norris has struggled against the Tigers in his career, going 0-3 with a 6.57 ERA in four starts, all over the last two seasons. At Comerica Park, he's 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts.
Price led the AL this season in strikeouts (271) and innings (248 1/3), he had the third-fewest walks per nine innings (1.4) and was fifth in WHIP (1.08).
He has excellent career numbers against the Orioles, going 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 17 starts. There was a time the Orioles could do little against Price.
But that started to change last year. Since 2013, Price is 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA in five starts against the Orioles and the Birds have 43 hits off him in 27 innings during that span. All five starts came with Tampa Bay and the Orioles were 3-2 in those contests.
By the way, Price has a 5.06 career postseason ERA and in four career Division Series starts, he is 0-4 with an ERA of 5.81.
So, the Orioles have taken care of business so far, going 2-0 at home. In the other playoff games so far, the home teams are just 1-5.
Now both Baltimore and Kansas City are a win away from the AL Championship Series.
