Quick hits from Camden Yards

Orioles manager Buck Showalter expects first baseman Chris Davis to return to the lineup on Friday in Toronto.

Showalter said Davis is dealing with "a couple of things" physically and he's been looking for a spot to rest his first baseman. Davis continues to ice his thumb, an injury he sustained at Tropicana Field while making a slide/dive into second base.

Showalter said "nothing got worse" for Davis following last night's brawl and he hasn't been informed of any new injuries to his players.

The Orioles haven't heard from the league office today regarding a suspension for Manny Machado.

Caleb Joseph is expected to report to Double-A Bowie on June 14 and could serve as the designated hitter in games. He won't be cleared to catch.

Still no word on Yovani Gallardo's next start. The Orioles want him to take a work day in Toronto before deciding whether to activate him from the disabled list or give him another rehab start.

As I wrote earlier today, Ubaldo Jimenez is listed as Sunday afternoon's starter in Toronto.

Gallardo said he feels great other than the normal soreness, and he's eager to start pitching again for the Orioles.

Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez opted out of his minor league deal with the Orioles. Rodriguez "took his leave," according to executive vice president Dan Duquette.

The Orioles named Patrick Di Gregory director of professional scouting and special projects. He will oversee professional scouting operations and complete special baseball operations projects.

Gregory has been with the Orioles since 2014 while serving as coordinator of baseball operations. He interned with the Pirates in 2012.
