Orioles and Rays lineups (updated)

Trey Mancini is out of the Orioles lineup after fouling a ball off his left calf and left foot last night and leaving the game following his run-scoring double. Ryan Mountcastle is starting at first base after his reinstatement from the concussion injured list.

Mountcastle has an RBI in seven consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors and the second-longest of his career behind an eight-game stretch from May 31-June 9. He leads the Orioles with 15 RBIs since the All-Star break and is slashing .308/.324/.615 in the second half.

Manager Brandon Hyde gave the obvious response when asked whether activating Mountcastle was an easy decision.

"Yes, it was," he said.

"We're excited to have Ryan back. He passed everything yesterday through the league, through the union, through our medical people and he's ready to go."

Mancini is batting .347/439/.694 (17-for-49) with five doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs in 13 games against the Rays this season.

"He's day-to-day," Hyde said. "The calf was really sore when he woke up this morning. He's getting treatment on it this afternoon but just still just really sore. Hopefully, he'll be in there tomorrow. We'll see."

Outfielder Ryan McKenna was optioned again to make room for Mountcastle.

"It's a tough one because we like Mac so much," Hyde said. "I think the important thing for Mac is we felt like he needs to play every day."

Urias-Catch-White-Sidebar.jpgRamón Urías is hitting second and playing second base, with Jorge Mateo moving to shortstop and Richie Martin to the bench. Martin has hit safely in four straight games to match his career high.

Left-hander John Means has allowed 10 earned runs (11 total) with 21 hits, two walks and 13 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings this season during his three starts against Tampa Bay.

The Orioles are batting .148 (16-for-108) with runners in scoring position in 14 August games. They don't have a home run with a runner in scoring position this month and only two of their 19 homers in August have come with a runner on base.

A win tonight would snap a 12-game losing streak that's two short of the season high.

"I think our spirits are great," major league coach Fredi González said earlier today. "These guys are level-headed and I don't see a lot of ups and down. They come in and get their work in. I think our coaching staff does a great job keeping those guys that way. Donnie (Long) and José (Hernández) take care of the hitting guys and don't let those guys get down, and Holty (Chris Holt) and Holmesy (Darren Holmes) do a great job with the pitching.

"They come in level-headed every day, they try to get better and try to win ballgames. At the end of the day that's what we try to do, win ballgames. But as coaches, you've got to stay positive, you've got to keep the energy going, because our team feeds off us."

Right-hander Drew Rasmussen has made three starts among his 13 appearances, which suggests another bullpen game for the Rays. He's allowed 11 runs and 23 hits with nine walks, 29 strikeouts and only two home runs in 26 innings.

Rasmussen hadn't gone more than three innings until his last outing, when he started in Boston and allowed one run and one hit in four innings. He's made two relief appearances against the Orioles, his only win of the season coming on Aug. 6 at Camden Yards after allowing one run and five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

He tossed two scoreless and hitless innings against them on July 19.

Rasmussen was drafted three times, beginning with Diamondbacks in the 39th round in 2014. He chose to attend Oregon State University, the Rays selected him 31st overall after his junior season and he didn't sign due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. The Brewers chose him in the sixth round in 2018.

The Rays acquired Rasmussen on May 21 in the Willy Adames/Trevor Richards deal.

Tampa Bay has scored eight runs or more in eight of its last 10 games. The Rays are averaging 6.5 runs per game since July 23, most in the majors. They've hit 24 homers in their last nine games and 38 in the last 16.

Rays pitchers have allowed three runs or fewer in 62 games, most in the American League.

Tampa Bay is 36-18 against division opponents.

Tonight's lineup includes Randy Arozarena, Nelson Cruz, Wander Franco and Yandy Díaz in the top four after they sat out last night's win. Arozarena is 17-for-37 (.459) against the Orioles this season with three doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Before the game, the Rays selected the contract of former Orioles reliever Shawn Armstrong and optioned outfielder Mike Brosseau, who homered last night.

Manager Kevin Cash told reporters that Ryan Yarbrough is expected to come off the COVID-19 injured list and pitch Wednesday night.
