This, that and the other

This, that and the other

The Orioles are expected to make another roster move today with infielder Ryan Flaherty eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list.

Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Flaherty, who went 0-for-2 with two walks last night at Triple-A Norfolk, would be added to the 25-man roster. Flaherty has an option, but the Orioles intend to keep him in the majors.

The key for Flaherty, of course, is being fully healed after two stints on the disabled list with a right groin strain. He was fine the first time that the Orioles activated him, but he felt discomfort again while ranging to his right on a grounder up the middle.

How do the Orioles create a spot for Flaherty today?

With Steve Pearce and Jimmy Paredes able to play second base if Flaherty needs a break or moves to shortstop, Everth Cabrera becomes the latest Oriole to skate on thin ice.

everth-cabrera-sidebar-white.jpgCabrera is batting .205/.242/.227 with two doubles, four RBIs, two stolen bases and three errros in 25 games. The Orioles prefer his defense at shortstop over second base.

The issue with Cabrera centers on how the Orioles no longer can option him to the minors. He'd have to approve an outright assignment if he cleared waivers. He'd still get the remainder of his $2.4 million contract if he became a free agent.

Are the Orioles working on another trade similar to the Ryan Webb deal with the Dodgers?

I'm trying to come up with an alternative. Outfielders David Lough, Alejandro De Aza and Travis Snider are out of options. A decision on one of them could come if the Orioles decide to select the contract of Nolan Reimold or Chris Parmelee from Norfolk.

I'm open to suggestions here. But don't bother submitting how the Orioles should DFA Chris Davis because it's not happening, no matter how high his strikeout total climbs.

As long as we're talking options this morning, Oliver Drake has one. Chaz Roe is out of them.

"One of the things we were trying to do with some of these moves was create more optional pieces in our bullpen. Optional pieces even as a starter," Showalter said. "That's one of the things that hurts about not having Mac (T.J. McFarland) here is he was a moveable piece."

McFarland and Tyler Wilson are the choices to start one game of Thursday's doubleheader. No other candidates at the moment. The only way a player can be recalled in fewer than 10 days after being optioned is as an injury replacement or 26th player in a doubleheader.

Whichever pitcher is recalled will have to be optioned later that night.

The Orioles lead the majors with 13 outfield assists. Lough picked up his first last night since July 6, 2014 in Boston. Delmon Young leads the team and is tied for third in the American League with five.

Norfolk has used nine starting pitchers in the last nine games. Eddie Gamboa relieved McFarland last night and tossed six hitless innings.

OK ... I tried ... but I can't do it. I must call him "Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa."

In case you missed it, former Orioles outfielder and current team executive Brady Anderson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, and drove in the winning run in Saturday's Hall of Fame Classic in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Six Hall of Famers and 30 former major league players took part in the seventh annual event.

Anderson scored in the first inning on a double steal. He stroked a two-run double in the sixth that decided the outcome.

Anderson faced left-handers in his first three at-bats, including former Braves pitcher Steve Avery twice.

Asked about his one out, Anderson said the second baseman made a diving stop and throw, beating him by a quarter of a step. I'm taking his word for it.

I'm also wondering if he could be inserted into today's lineup.

Kira Kazantsev, who was crowned Miss America 2015, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch today.
