A few morning notes

TAMPA - Pedro Alvarez was working out early today at the Ed Smith Stadium complex while his new teammates filed into the clubhouse.

Alvarez was on the half-field, named after Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver, at 7:42 a.m. He carried an equipment bag and one of his bats.

Third base coach Bobby Dickerson met up with Alvarez, who later was joined by infield instructor and MASN analyst Mike Bordick.

"I've been excited, I've been eager to get out there and just keep throwing that ball around, lacing up the cleats and just working. Getting to know these guys.

"Every day I try to get a little better and learn something new every day. But we've been hands-on already and again, I want to continue to grow as a person, grow as a player, and I think we have the perfect staff and team to do so here."

Alvarez will have another full day of workouts while waiting for his first start. Manager Buck Showalter indicated yesterday that Alvarez could make his debut on Sunday.

The Orioles haven't listed their starter for Monday's game against the Phillies in Sarasota, but Yovani Gallardo is expected to take his second turn in the rotation.

Gallardo made his debut Wednesday against the Phillies in Clearwater and allowed three runs and four hits in two innings, all the damage coming in the opening frame. He retired the side in order in the second.

Ubaldo Jimenez makes his third start Saturday against the Twins in Sarasota. Miguel Gonzalez makes his third start Sunday against the Twins in Fort Myers.

The list of relievers behind starter Mike Wright today includes Odrisamer Despaigne, Mychal Givens, Dale Thayer, Andy Oliver, Pedro Beato, Cesar Cabral, Chris Jones, Donnie Hart, Jason Stoffel and Mitch Horacek.

The reserves today include Trey Mancini, Dariel Alvarez, L.J. Hoes, Xavier Avery, Alfredo Marte, Adrian Marin, Corban Joseph, Garabez Rosa and Michael Almanzar.

Ryan Flaherty is batting second today and playing second base, with Jonathan Schoop staying back in camp. Flaherty is 7-for-15 with a home run and five walks in eight games.

Paul Janish, starting at shortstop today, is 5-for-16 with three walks. He's also been outstanding at shortstop, which is to be expected.

J.J. Hardy isn't on the trip. He's 5-for-13 with a triple.
