Rare night off for both Abrams and García vs. Sale

ATLANTA – Davey Martinez laughed as he recalled his one and only playing experience against Randy Johnson.

On May 24, 1998, the inaugural Devil Rays franchise faced the Mariners at the Kingdome, with the Big Unit on the mound for Seattle. Tampa Bay’s regular lineup featured two Hall of Famers in Fred McGriff and Wade Boggs. Neither of whom played that day, because of the particular challenge left-handed hitters faced against Johnson, who had the ability to screw up a good hitter for weeks with one dominant start.

The only lefty in the lineup that day: Martinez, who batted second. And then proceeded to strike out four times.

Some 26 years later, Martinez was thinking about that scenario as he planned his lineup for tonight’s series opener against Chris Sale. Which explains why CJ Abrams and Luis García Jr. are sitting against the Braves’ left-handed ace and Cy Young Award favorite.

“It’s funny, because when I was looking at how good Chris has been this year, it reminds me a lot of Randy Johnson, where all the lefties sat,” Martinez said. “He’s been really good, so it’ll be a lot of righties in there, and see if we can beat him that way.”

Orioles clinch first division title since 2014 (updated)

The wait is over.

For the last magic number to hit zero. For the first American League East championship since 2014. For the Rays to accept their wild card fate.

Pop those corks again.

Anthony Santander homered in the first inning, his fly ball traveling 405 feet to left field and clearing the wall. The crowd roared. Dean Kremer tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Pinch-hitter Heston Kjerstad dumped a double into left field that scored Adam Frazier in the eighth.

The ballpark kept getting louder, reaching its peak volume when Trevor Story grounded out against Tyler Wells to seal the Orioles’ 2-0 victory over the Red Sox before an announced crowd of 27,543. The 11th shutout of the season. The latest reason for the city to embrace its team and not let go.

O's game blog: One win from the AL East championship

The Orioles will take the field tonight at Camden Yards to open a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox. They need one win to clinch their 10th American League East division championship and first since the 2014 season.

The Orioles (99-59) can also become the sixth team in club history and first since 1980 to win 100 games.

Last night the club improved to 40 games over the .500 mark for the first time since the end of the 1997 season when they were 102-57.

Baltimore's 5-1 win over Washington Wednesday night was its fourth win in a row. The O's have gone through a stretch where they lost four straight, then won four straight, lost three in a row and have now won four in a row.

During the four-game win streak, Baltimore pitchers have allowed just 15 hits and three runs with four walks and 23 strikeouts. The team ERA is 0.75 in this span.

Orioles lineup with magic number at one

A win tonight gives the Orioles their 10th division title and first since 2014. It’s that simple.

The magic number is one and the Orioles are entering a four-game series against the Red Sox at Camden Yards. A 100th victory would match their total in 1980.

Ryan Mountcastle returns to the lineup and is playing first base. He was reinstated from the 10-day injured list yesterday after dealing with left AC joint inflammation.

Austin Hays stays in the leadoff spot after reaching base four times last night. Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter again.

Aaron Hicks is the center fielder.

Orioles and Red Sox lineups in Boston

BOSTON – Aaron Hicks is in center field this afternoon against the Red Sox and James McCann is catching. Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter.

Austin Hays is the cleanup hitter. Jordan Westburg is at second base and Gunnar Henderson is at third.

Jack Flaherty has posted a 6.66 ERA and 1.521 WHIP in five starts with the Orioles. He struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings in Arizona but gave up four runs and six hits.

Flaherty has never faced the Red Sox.

The Orioles have won six games in a row and 12 of 15 and are 89-51 overall, 47-25 on the road. They’ve scored 34 runs this season in four games at Fenway Park.

After landing Sale and Thornburg in trades, Red Sox seem well-stocked on mound

After landing Sale and Thornburg in trades, Red Sox seem well-stocked on mound
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - When Red Sox manager John Farrell sat down for his gathering with reporters late Tuesday afternoon, the first question asked was, "Who is going to be your opening day starter?'' Farrell laughed. "It's only Dec. 6,'' he said. "There's time to figure it out.'' There's also an impressive list from which to choose, especially after the Red Sox on Tuesday acquired pitcher Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that included Boston's top prospect, Yoan...

Duquette on Trumbo, free agent and trade talks, bullpen and more

Duquette on Trumbo, free agent and trade talks, bullpen and more
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - So what did we learn today about the Orioles at the Winter Meetings? They're still focused on outfielders and catchers, whether via free agency or trade. I was told by multiple sources that the Orioles weren't scheduled to meet with Mark Trumbo's representatives, contradicting a report, but executive vice president Dan Duquette didn't bite when asked about it. I'm not ready to state with any certainty that it did or didn't happen. "That's a fluid conversation,"...

Rizzo on Sale: "We reached as far as we were going to reach"

Rizzo on Sale: "We reached as far as we were going to reach"
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - As talks with the White Sox about a potential Chris Sale trade progressed over the last week, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo found himself willing to part ways with some of the kind of elite prospects he normally would deem untouchable. The availability of Sale, a five-time All-Star left-hander under contract for the next three years at an affordable price, led Rizzo in a direction he hasn't gone before. But in order to pull off this blockbuster, the Nationals GM...

Quick hits from the Winter Meetings

Quick hits from the Winter Meetings
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette didn't offer a confirmation or denial today when asked whether he met with Mark Trumbo's representative. He only stated that it's "a fluid conversation." Duquette repeated his desire to land an outfielder and met again today with various agents and team executives. He also had trade talks involving catchers. Asked to respond to a report that the Orioles' four-year offer to Trumbo is off the table, Duquette only mentioned...

Do Orioles react to Sale news?

Do Orioles react to Sale news?
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - If you're counting on Dan Duquette to hit the panic button or go on a signing/trading rampage to counter what a division rival did at the Winter Meetings, I need to reintroduce you to the Orioles' executive vice president of baseball operations. This isn't how he operates. This isn't how former executive Andy MacPhail operated. The Orioles walked into the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center with a plan in place, though it's always wise to remain flexible....

Red Sox top Nationals' offer, land Sale in blockbuster trade

Red Sox top Nationals' offer, land Sale in blockbuster trade
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - The Nationals finished runners-up in the Mark Melancon sweepstakes on Monday. And it appears they've now finished runners-up in the Chris Sale sweepstakes today. The White Sox have struck a deal to send Sale to the Red Sox for elite prospects Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech, plus two other minor-leaguers, according to multiple reports here at the Winter Meetings. It's a blockbuster trade featuring one of the game's best left-handers going to a powerhouse contender in...

Nationals hopeful they're closing in on trade for lefty Sale

Nationals hopeful they're closing in on trade for lefty Sale
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - Nothing is done until it's done. And nothing is done in this case. But the Nationals front office went to bed late Monday night hopeful they were closing in on a blockbuster trade for White Sox left-hander Chris Sale, one that would likely cost them at least two of their top four prospects. Club officials spent a good part of Day One of the Winter Meetings engaged in talks with the White Sox and by early evening had made significant progress toward a deal for Sale,...

Nationals remain unwilling to include top prospects in trades

Nationals remain unwilling to include top prospects in trades
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - The Nationals came to the Winter Meetings having already begun trade talks with the Pirates for outfielder Andrew McCutchen and the White Sox for left-hander Chris Sale. They've continued those talks since arriving at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, getting a better sense of what those two clubs are seeking in a deal. The end result as of early Monday evening? No trades have been made, and the asking price for both players remains high. "We've had...

With meetings officially underway, can Nats land a big prize?

With meetings officially underway, can Nats land a big prize?
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - The Winter Meetings officially open for business this morning - no, anything you saw or read about yesterday at the Gaylord National Resort didn't officially happen - and so the rumors will begin to fly fast and furious through the lobby here. Whether the Nationals make official news these next four days or just continue to find themselves the subject of potential news remains to be seen. But there's certainly a sense among everyone that they are primed to do...

Nats could be center of attention at local Winter Meetings

Nats could be center of attention at local Winter Meetings
For the next four days, Washington will be the center of the baseball universe. The question around here is whether the Nationals will be the center of attention at the Winter Meetings being held in their backyard. Few teams around the sport have the potential to be in the spotlight as much as the Nationals do this week at baseball's annual offseason event, held for the first time at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, a mere seven miles south of Nationals Park. The hometown...
