The Baltimore Orioles today announced the following promotions within the scouting departments in Baseball Operations: MATT BLOOD has been promoted from Director, Player Development to Vice President, Player Development and Domestic Scouting; KOBY PEREZ has been promoted from Senior Director, International Scouting to Vice President, International Scouting and Operations; MIKE SNYDER has been promoted from Director, Pro Scouting to Senior Director, Pro Scouting; GERARDO CABRERA has been promoted from Latin American Supervisor to Director, Latin American Scouting; KEVIN CARTER has been promoted from Senior Analyst, Pro Scouting to Manager, Pro Scouting; HENDRIK HERZ has been promoted from Senior Analyst, Scouting to Manager, Domestic Scouting Analysis; CHAD TATUM has been promoted from Senior Analyst, Scouting to Manager, Domestic Scouting; WILL ROBERTSON has been promoted from Senior Analyst, Pro Scouting to Special Assignment Scout; ALEX TARANDEK has been promoted from Analyst, Scouting to Senior Analyst, Scouting; MICHAEL WEIS has been named Senior Data Scientist, Draft Evaluation, and MARIA ARELLANO has been named Senior Manager, International Operations and Baseball Administration.

Blood will be responsible for overseeing the Orioles’ player development and domestic scouting operations, including staff recruitment and development, implementation of player development strategies and programs throughout the entire minor league system, and First-Year Player Draft operations. He will continue to report to Elias. Blood joined the Orioles organization as the Director of Player Development in September of 2019. During his tenure, the Orioles have ascended organizational farm system rankings, now rated as the top system in all of baseball by Baseball America, ESPN, and MLB Pipeline. He has 12 years of Major League experience and has spent 18 years in professional and amateur baseball. Prior to joining the Orioles, Blood served as the Director of Player Development for the Texas Rangers for the 2019 season. He also worked for the St. Louis Cardinals as an area scout from 2009-15 and served as the Team Director for USA Baseball’s 18U National Team from 2016-18. Blood graduated from the University of North Carolina in 2007 with a degree in economics. He resides in Baltimore with his wife, Allison, and their two children, Henry and Ben.

The Orioles and Major League Baseball today announced that pitcher KYLE GIBSON has been named the Orioles’ 2023 nominee for the esteemed Roberto Clemente Award. The most prominent individual player award bestowed by MLB, the Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, is the annual recognition of a Major League player from each club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, sportsmanship, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. 

The Orioles will join all of Major League Baseball in celebrating the 22^nd annual Roberto Clemente Day on Friday, September 15, as they host the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:05 p.m. ET. This commemorative day was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially acknowledge local club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award. As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards, all players will wear a ‘21’ patch on their jersey, and a special tribute video will be played in ballparks. Once again this season, each team’s Clemente nominee will wear ”21” on their uniform, joining players and uniformed personnel from Puerto Rico, previous nominees, and those who have worn “21” on prior Roberto Clemente Days.

As part of the nomination and in recognition of Gibson’s exemplary commitment to serving his community, MLB will make a $7,500 donation to Big League Impact. The Orioles will recognize Gibson in a special on-field ceremony on Friday, September 15.

The nomination­ comes as no surprise to those who have witnessed Gibson's unwavering dedication to both the game of baseball and the betterment of his community. In his first season with the Orioles, Gibson has quickly become a beloved figure among fans, teammates, and the Baltimore community alike. Beyond his achievements on the mound, Gibson's off-field contributions have left an indelible mark in the hearts of many. A three-time nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, while part of three different teams, shows how passionate Gibson is about giving back to the communities he calls home. 

One of Gibson’s focuses this season is interacting with a different group of community members every homestand. Gibson has met with multiple community-based organizations including STAND Mentorship, whose mission is to enrich the lives of young men through educational experiences that will help them to grow and have a positive impact in the future, and Diamonds on the Rise, on organization committed to developing and promoting quality programs that provides a nurturing and thoughtful environment for individuals living with psychiatric diagnoses who may have challenges with their daily living activities. Gibson uses this time to discuss goal setting and the importance of perseverance. He has spoken with active-duty members of the military and their families to learn about their careers and thank them for their service, and he has given private tours of the Orioles’ clubhouse to children battling life threatening illnesses, providing a memorable moment of reprieve for struggling families.

Henderson’s HRs are a big hit with Maryland Lottery’s Home Run Riches second-chance winners.

As the calendar turns toward the final month of the season, the Baltimore Orioles remain perched atop the American League East Division. A large part of that success was the meteoric rise of rookie Gunnar Henderson. 

While the team is pushing for the postseason, Henderson could be making his own push for American League Rookie of the Year consideration. Henderson has been contributing spectacular defense, and at the plate he’s been one of the team’s top contributors as the Orioles have surged to the top of the standings. He leads the team in slugging percentage, is second in on-base percentage, and is a team leader in home runs (second only to Anthony Santander). Henderson has gotten hot at the right time, hitting .279 with four home runs and 16 RBI through the first 19 games of August.

The Orioles today announced their 2024 Grapefruit League schedule, which is slated to begin Saturday, February 24, at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla. against the Boston Red Sox. The club’s 2024 spring schedule features 16 home games, including eight weekend games.

The O’s will face nine different opponents during Grapefruit League play, with 13 of the club’s 32 games against American League East divisional rivals – Boston Red Sox (3 games; 2 at home), New York Yankees (2 games; 1 at home), Tampa Bay Rays (4 games; 2 at home), and Toronto Blue Jays (4 games; 2 at home).

The Orioles will play a spring-high six games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, three of which will be at Ed Smith Stadium. Baltimore will also host the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies during the 2024 Spring Training slate.

The team’s 16-game road schedule features three games at the Braves and Pirates, two games at the Blue Jays, Rays, and Twins, and one game at the Phillies, Red Sox, Tigers, and Yankees.

The 2024 season will mark the Orioles’ 15th Spring Training season in Sarasota and the club’s 14th season at the renovated Ed Smith Stadium.

The Orioles will celebrate the 40^th Anniversary of the 1983 World Series title with a special pregame ceremony on Saturday, August 5, prior to the 7:05 p.m. ET game against the New York Mets. The pregame ceremony will feature returning players of the 1983 championship team, including Orioles Legends and National Baseball Hall of Famers EDDIE MURRAY, JIM PALMER, and CAL RIPKEN, JR.

The first 20,000 fans, 15 and over attending Saturday’s game will also receive an EDDIE MURRAY 1983 World Series bobblehead, presented by Royal Farms.

Murray and additional members of the 1983 team, along with the Oriole Bird, will participate in a clinic at Oriole Park at Camden Yards for 50 local Baltimore City youth from The Weinberg Y in Waverly, providing instruction on the fundamentals of baseball.

The Orioles today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher SHINTARO FUJINAMI from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher EASTON LUCAS.

Fujinami, 29, is 5-8 with an 8.57 ERA (47 ER/49.1 IP) with 52 hits, 48 total runs, six home runs, 30 walks (1 IBB), five hit batters, and 51 strikeouts in 34 games (7 starts) this season. After opening the year in the rotation, he was transitioned to a reliever in late April. Since June 1, he has a 3.26 ERA (7 ER/19.1 IP) with 17 hits, two home runs, six walks, one hit batter, and 20 strikeouts in 17 games (3 starts). All three of those starts after moving to the bullpen were 1.0 inning or less. 

A native of Sakai, Japan, Fujinami signed with the A’s as a free agent on January 13, 2023 after pitching 10 professional seasons with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He was a three-time NPB All-Star from 2013-15.

Fujinami, pronounced shin-TAR-oh foo-jee-NAH-mee, will be the second Japanese-born player in Orioles history, joining Koji Uehara from 2009-11.

Lucas, 26, was 1-0 with one save and a 2.93 ERA (10 ER/30.2 IP) with 19 hits, 11 total runs, six home runs, 13 walks, and 38 strikeouts in 21 combined games between Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie this season. He made his Triple-A debut with the Tides on June 9. Born in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Lucas was acquired by the O’s from Miami for infielder Jonathan Villar on December 2, 2019. He was originally selected by the Marlins in the 14^th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Pepperdine University (CA).

The Baltimore Orioles tonight selected center fielder ENRIQUE BRADFIELD JR. from Vanderbilt University (TN) with their first selection as the 17^th overall pick of the 2023 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Orioles also selected outfielder MAC HORVATH at No. 53 overall from the University of North Carolina and right-handed pitcher JACKSON BAUMEISTER at No. 63 overall out of Florida State University.

Bradfield Jr., 21, slashed .279/.410/.429 (65-for-233) with 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 69 runs scored, 34 RBI, 45 walks, and 37 stolen bases in 62 games during his junior season. He was named a unanimous preseason All-American, earning first team honors from Baseball America and second-team honors from D1Baseball.com, Perfect Game, and Collegiate Baseball. He was also selected to the Preseason All-SEC First Team and the Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List. His 130 career stolen bases are the most in program history. Bradfield Jr. attended American Heritage High School in Hialeah, Fla., and helped lead the school to back-to-back 6A District Championships in 2018 and 2019. He was ranked as the fifth-best outfield prospect and the No. 21 overall draft prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Horvath, 21, slashed .305/.418/.711 (73-for-239) with 21 doubles, two triples, 24 home runs, 73 runs scored, 66 RBI, 43 walks, and 25 stolen bases in 60 games during his junior season. He became the first player in school history and first ACC player since 1999 to hit 20 home runs, 20 doubles, and steal 20 bases in a season. Horvath paced the Tar Heels in slugging percentage, runs, RBI, triples, home runs, total bases (170), and stolen bases, earning Second Team All-ACC honors as a result. He attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he pitched and played shortstop. Horvath was ranked as the No. 82 overall draft prospect by MLB Pipeline. 

Baumeister, 21, pitched to a 5-5 record with a 5.09 ERA (39 ER/69.0 IP) with 95 strikeouts in 15 appearances (14 starts) for the Seminoles during his sophomore season, earning a spot on the All-ACC Third Team for his efforts. He was also named National Pitcher of the Week by Perfect Game and NCBWA and ACC Pitcher of the Week after striking out 14 against Clemson on April 6, the most by an ACC pitcher and eighth-most by a Division I pitcher last season. Baumeister attended The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., where he was named an All-American by Baseball America and Florida Times-Union First Coast Player of the Year in his senior year. He was ranked as the No. 167 overall draft prospect by MLB Pipeline.
