The best and worst one-year deals in Nationals history

Nelson Cruz Gray

The Nationals’ moves so far this winter have almost exclusively involved one-year deals. Only right-hander Trevor Williams (two years, $13 million) got more than a one-year commitment from the Nats, who signed Jeimer Candelario ($5 million), Corey Dickerson ($2.25 million) and Dominic Smith ($2 million) each to short-term contracts.

There are no bad one-year deals. So say many baseball executives, justifying even the high-salary contracts to players who don’t pan out as worthy because of the lack of the kind of long-term commitment that can hamper a franchise.

Some one-year deals, however, are better than others. Sometimes, a team can turn a minimal payout into quality production (and maybe even flip a player at the trade deadline for a prospect). And sometimes, a team can waste a large chunk of money on a guy who doesn’t live up to his potential and loses whatever trade value he might have had.

The Nationals have signed plenty of free agents to one-year deals in their history. Which were the best? Which were the worst? (Note: We’re only talking about free agents who played somewhere else the previous season and signed major league contracts with the Nats. No players who re-signed, and no players who signed minor league contracts included for these purposes.)

Here’s one humble reporter’s take …

Rizzo on bullpen changes, trade deadline mindset

Rizzo on bullpen changes, trade deadline mindset
MIAMI - As July creeps ever closer and thoughts of the trade deadline begin creeping into his mind, Mike Rizzo made a series of bullpen changes this week that could go a long way toward determining just how the Nationals general manager chooses to approach July 31. In releasing Trevor Rosenthal and then summoning veterans Fernando Rodney and Jonny Venters from the minors, Rizzo ostensibly declared this new-look relief corps has one month to prove itself before he must decide whether to be...

Source: Nationals calling up 42-year-old reliever Rodney
The Nationals are going to take a flyer on another late-inning reliever with a track record of success but ugly numbers this season. Fernando Rodney, the 42-year-old with 325 career saves but a 9.42 ERA in 17 big league games this season, will be promoted from Triple-A Fresno and added to the active roster before Tuesday's series opener against the Marlins in Miami, a source familiar with the transaction confirmed. Rodney owns a 3.79 ERA and a long track record as a quality late-inning...

Fedde optioned to Fresno, opening door for Voth to start again

Fedde optioned to Fresno, opening door for Voth to start again
It appears Austin Voth's fill-in start Sunday opened enough eyes to warrant another look. The Nationals have optioned Erick Fedde to Triple-A Fresno, paving the way for Voth to remain as part of the big league rotation on the heels of his impressive outing Sunday afternoon against the Braves. Fedde had assumed the No. 5 starter's job over the last month, and had pitched well for much of that time, posting a 2.70 ERA in four outings. But he gave up five runs in six innings to the Diamondbacks...

Conceding $8 million mistake, Nationals release Rosenthal

Conceding $8 million mistake, Nationals release Rosenthal
For one fleeting moment Friday night, the Nationals thought Trevor Rosenthal had turned the corner and could finally become a trusted member of their bullpen. But then came yet another high-profile meltdown on the mound Saturday night, and so by Sunday morning, the team made the move that had loomed for months but was put off until now. The Nationals released Rosenthal today, finally conceding defeat on a reclamation project that went haywire in the season's first week and never could be...

Game 77 lineups: Nats vs. Braves (Rosenthal released)

Game 77 lineups: Nats vs. Braves (Rosenthal released)
This critical week had been going about as well as possible for the Nationals. They swept the Phillies. They won Friday night's opener against the Braves in exciting fashion. And then ... well, Saturday night's 13-9 loss - which saw the bullpen blow a pair of late leads - obviously put a big damper on the week and suddenly put more weight on today's finale at Nationals Park. A win today and the Nats would still going 5-1 against two division rivals and make a real statement that they're...

Updates on Robles, Ross, Rosenthal and Voth

Updates on Robles, Ross, Rosenthal and Voth
Nationals manager Davey Martinez had no second update on Victor Robles after the center fielder left Saturday night's game due to symptoms of dehydration. Robles left in the second inning of the Braves' 13-9 comeback victory. Nationals starter Aníbal Sánchez watched as Robles dropped down on one knee behind him in the top of the second during a Nick Markakis at-bat. "I don't know what's going on back there at that moment, but, you know, just figure out after," Sánchez said. "It...

Zimmerman's rehab continues; notes on bullpen, Sunday's starter

Zimmerman's rehab continues; notes on bullpen, Sunday's starter
Ryan Zimmerman went 1-for-1 with a walk in his first rehab game Friday for Double-A Harrisburg. Nationals manager Davey Martinez said Zimmerman and his right foot came out of the game OK. The veteran first baseman has been on the injured list since April 28, missing 48 games, with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. "A little sore today. But feels good," Martinez said. "Ran first to third, walk, ran first to third, was OK, we will see how he feels today. He's scheduled to play again today...

Finally entrusted in big spot, Rosenthal comes through

Finally entrusted in big spot, Rosenthal comes through
As he handed Trevor Rosenthal the baseball with the game on the line Friday night - a scenario that had not been seen around these parts since the season's very first week - Davey Martinez had a simple message for his beleaguered right-hander. "This is your moment," manager said to pitcher. "Enjoy it." Given what Rosenthal has been through in 2019, why not try to spread a little positivity in a critical moment? Four pitches and one gargantuan out later, Rosenthal indeed was enjoying the...

Nationals come up big to beat Braves in series opener (updated)

Nationals come up big to beat Braves in series opener (updated)
It's only June 21, so there's still the promise of far more important baseball games yet to be played. But in order for those future games to carry real importance, the Nationals know they needed to treat this June 21 game as though it was taking place on Aug. 21. And so here was Davey Martinez pulling out all the stops in tonight's series opener against the Braves, trying out a different lineup combination, then turning to whatever available arms he had at his disposal in an attempt to...

Strasburg pounded early, Nats can't rally vs. D-backs (updated)

Strasburg pounded early, Nats can't rally vs. D-backs (updated)
Stephen Strasburg, more often than not, has pitched deep into games this season and at worst given the Nationals a good chance to win. The Nats lineup, more often than not, has battled late even when trailing and at worst brought the tying run to the plate and given the team a good chance to win. When neither of those regular developments occurred this afternoon on South Capitol Street, the end result was the ugliest, least-inspiring loss this team has suffered in a while. With four early home...

Injury updates and more praise for Rosenthal (Nats win 7-3)

Injury updates and more praise for Rosenthal (Nats win 7-3)
Nationals manager Davey Martinez said first baseman Matt Adams was good to go Thursday, but the Nats opted to give him some more rest. The veteran slugger is not in the starting lineup tonight mainly because the Diamondbacks are pitching the left-hander Robbie Ray. Howie Kendrick is playing first base tonight. "Yeah, he felt good," Martinez said of Adams. "At that point, just kind of wanted to give him a day. But he swung the bat well, so definitely available." First baseman Ryan Zimmerman...

Another positive step forward for Rosenthal

Another positive step forward for Rosenthal
Whether it's low-, mid- or high-leverage game situations, it doesn't matter, right-hander Trevor Rosenthal is simply looking for positive outings. After the way the season started for him, where he had lost confidence in his ability to throw strikes, Thursday's clean ninth inning was a big step. The Arizona Diamondbacks won the rain-delayed opener over the Nationals 5-0, scoring all their runs before the end of the fourth inning. The game included a 63-minute rain delay and left-hander Matt...

With improvement in all phases, Nats inching back into race

With improvement in all phases, Nats inching back into race
They had just been swept in ugly fashion in New York. Their bullpen was a disaster. Their defensive play was sloppy. Their manager's job security was being questioned. The Nationals were 12 games under .500 on May 24, 10 games back in the National League East, and few gave them any chance of resurrecting themselves at that point. Only a handful of teams this century had managed to even finish with a winning record after playing so poorly through their first 50 games. As the team returned home...

Rosenthal returns with scoreless ninth, Adams strains oblique

Rosenthal returns with scoreless ninth, Adams strains oblique
CHICAGO - Davey Martinez wanted to find a low-pressure situation to ease Trevor Rosenthal back into a big league game, and with his team up five runs entering the ninth inning Monday night, this looked like a good situation to do it. By the time Rosenthal actually entered from the right field bullpen, it had become a great situation to do it. The Nationals had tacked on six insurance runs in the top of the ninth, so now Rosenthal was able to pitch with a 12-1 lead. Of course, that also...

Sánchez cruises again, Nats bats explode in 12-1 win (updated)

Sánchez cruises again, Nats bats explode in 12-1 win (updated)
CHICAGO - The Nationals signed Aníbal Sánchez over the winter because they believed the veteran right-hander could duplicate his bounceback 2018 season with the Braves by virtue of his ability to induce weak contact. For six weeks, it looked like a colossal mistake. Sánchez couldn't get ahead of hitters, he couldn't keep himself from issuing free passes and he couldn't keep his ERA under 5.00. A two-week stint on the injured list with a strained hamstring followed, and when...

Martinez on picking DH, using Rosenthal again (Nats lead 4-1)

Martinez on picking DH, using Rosenthal again (Nats lead 4-1)
CHICAGO - The Nationals' lineup wasn't exactly built with American League baseball in mind, but the lineup Davey Martinez will be fielding the next two nights in a quick interleague series with the White Sox certainly fits the profile. Martinez recently has had room to start only two of the three players who make up the right side of his infield: Howie Kendrick, Brian Dozier and Matt Adams. That was less of a problem when Dozier was slumping or Adams was on the injured list, but now all three...

Rosenthal gets another shot in bullpen (Nats lead 4-0)

Rosenthal gets another shot in bullpen (Nats lead 4-0)
SAN DIEGO - The Nationals could've waited until Monday to make a final decision on Trevor Rosenthal, whether to activate the reliever off the injured list at the end of a 30-day rehab assignment or whether to cut ties with him and eat the $8 million they guaranteed him over the winter. They decided to go ahead and make the move now, though, activating Rosenthal before tonight's game against the Padres, hoping he can ride a couple of positive outings for Double-A Harrisburg earlier this week...

Game 64 lineups: Nats at Padres (Rosenthal activated)

Game 64 lineups: Nats at Padres (Rosenthal activated)
SAN DIEGO - After a couple of gloomy evenings to begin the weekend, the sun has finally come out and it's a beautiful day here. Maybe that's a good omen for the Nationals, who had to be feeling a bit gloomy themselves after Friday night's walk-off loss to the Padres. Things can only get sunnier from here, right? Here's reason for the Nationals to feel upbeat: Max Scherzer is on the mound tonight. That certainly doesn't guarantee victory, as we've seen too many times this season. But...

One more outing for Rosenthal before decision (Nats down 5-4)

One more outing for Rosenthal before decision (Nats down 5-4)
SAN DIEGO - It looks like the Nationals will send Trevor Rosenthal to the mound one more time for Harrisburg before making a final decision whether to bring the erratic reliever back to the majors or cut ties with him. Rosenthal pitched back-to-back games at Double-A on Tuesday and Wednesday, the first time he's done that since beginning a rehab assignment four weeks ago. Manager Davey Martinez said the right-hander will take a couple days off, then is scheduled to pitch again this...
