Gray earns another Clemente nomination, Blankenhorn elects free agency

Josiah Gray may not have made much impact on the field this year, but his continued impact off the field earned the Nationals right-hander another cherished honor.

Gray on Monday was named the Nats’ nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award, given out annually by Major League Baseball to the player who “best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

It’s the second straight year Gray has been nominated for the Clemente Award, the winner of which will be unveiled during the World Series. The league’s annual Roberto Clemente Day will be held Sept. 15, at which time the right-hander will be honored at Nationals Park prior to the team’s series finale against the Marlins.

After making his first All-Star team in 2023, Gray looked poised to take another bit step forward in his career when he was selected by manager Davey Martinez as the team’s Opening Day starter this spring. Gray, though, wound up making only two starts before reporting elbow pain. Sidelined for three months as he attempted to rehab through the injury and rejoin the rotation, he ultimately learned he had torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and underwent both Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure July 24 in Dallas. He’s expected to miss the majority of the 2025 season.

The 26-year-old has remained with the club during the early stages of his rehab, and he remains active in his off-field pursuits. As player ambassador to the Nationals’ Youth Academy, he is a regular visitor to the Southeast D.C. facility and has established charitable endeavors to help fund its programs.

This, that and the other

BOSTON – Suggesting ways that Brandon Hyde might attempt to revive a lagging offense, the baseball equivalent of using jumper cables on a stalled car, won’t come across as fresh ideas to the manager. Move guys up or down. Sit some and start others.

“I’ve tried all those things,” he said after Sunday’s 2-0 loss to the Rays.

Hyde had a few more tricks up his sleeve yesterday. Or combinations on his lineup card.

The 127th different order in 145 games had Cedric Mullins hitting second for only the second time in his career, Liván Soto at second base instead of Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo at third base instead of collecting splinters on the bench.

Anthony Santander hit his 40th homer and drove in all three runs in a 12-3 loss to the Red Sox. They’re now below .500 since the break.

McCann selected as Orioles' nominee for Roberto Clemente Award, new-look lineup elevates Mullins

BOSTON – Major League Baseball announced today that catcher James McCann is the Orioles’ nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to the player who “best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

The Orioles will recognize McCann in a special on-field ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The following comes from the club’s press release:

“Since joining the Orioles prior to the 2023 season, McCann has emerged as a cornerstone of community support in Baltimore, earning him a nomination for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award. His unwavering dedication to community service is a family affair, with McCann, his wife Jessica, and their twin boys actively contributing to their communities year-round. The McCann family donated 50 pairs of shoes to Church of the City’s Wrap Around Closet in Nashville, Tenn. supporting children in foster care.

“Earlier this season, the Orioles announced their adoption of Harlem Park Elementary Middle School, aiming to foster a lasting relationship and support students from pre-k all the way through their entry into the workforce. McCann eagerly embraced this partnership, actively engaging with Harlem Park students and staff at Friday home game batting practices, proudly donning a Harlem Park-branded t-shirt. His involvement extended to the classroom as well, where he visited PE classes to teach baseball skills and inspire students to pursue their dreams with perseverance. To further support Harlem Park, McCann and Jessica provided Harlem Park students with essential items such as backpacks, clothing, and shoes for the new school year, underscoring their dedication to fostering the growth and success of Baltimore’s youth.

Orioles pregame notes on Bautista, Means, Gibson's nomination and more

BOSTON – Orioles closer Félix Bautista played catch again today, increasing the distance on flat ground during his second session after a brief pause.

The club is downplaying the significance of it.

Bautista also threw in Anaheim while on the injured list with discomfort in his right elbow, described only as a “right UCL injury.”

“We’re going to see how he feels,” said manager Brandon Hyde. “We’re just kind of monitoring it day-to-day. It was just kind of a see how he feels, play a little catch today.”

Asked if Bautista throwing is a good sign, Hyde said, “I wouldn’t put any emphasis positive or negative about it. He was playing a little bit of catch, kind of seeing how he feels today.

Orioles and Red Sox lineups and notes

BOSTON – The Orioles are a season-high 37 games above .500 and four games ahead of the Rays in the American League East as they reach the final stage of their road trip at Fenway Park.

They’ve won five in a row, seven of nine, 11 of 14, 14 of 18 and 25 of 35. On the line this weekend is a streak of 84 consecutive multi-game series without being swept.

Gunnar Henderson is the shortstop tonight against the Red Sox. Ryan O’Hearn is batting cleanup as the designated hitter, followed by first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.

Austin Hays is in left field. In 18 games since Aug. 15, Hays is batting .338/.413/.646/1.059 with eight doubles, four homers and 13 RBIs.

Adam Frazier is playing second base and Ramón Urías is at third.

Martinez has follow-up procedure, Scherzer is Clemente nominee
Davey Martinez had a follow-up procedure on his left ankle earlier today, and though he was back at Nationals Park by mid-afternoon, it was unclear if he'd be in the dugout to manage tonight's game against the Marlins. Martinez, who already watched one game from his office following his initial Sept. 2 surgery, has been wearing a cast since. He's been managing all games from the dugout, his left leg propped up on the bench, but he hasn't been able to move around or step onto the field...
