Leftovers for breakfast

Heston Kjerstad grabbed a bat to hit on the field yesterday afternoon but paused to satisfy a reporter’s request for a minute of his time. That’s exactly how much of it he could spare, doing so with the usual smile and polite nature.

Kjerstad would begin the game on the bench, hours after learning that he made Baseball America’s Minor League All-Star Team, along with shortstop Jackson Holliday and catcher Samuel Basallo. He delivered a pinch-hit, RBI double in the eighth inning. Three of his first six career hits have gone for extra bases.

The honors keep finding him, even in Baltimore.

“I spent the majority of the season down there, and you consider that I’ve only been up here a little bit,” he said. “Definitely a solid year, cool to be a part of that and everything. There’s a lot of O’s players on that list, too. It just shows the organization we’re in.

“It’s awesome to be up here and getting things rolling. It’s been awesome to be a part of this clubhouse so far.”

Cora explains comments that Hyde deems disrespectful

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde spent part of last night’s media session praising his hitters, saying it was the best offensive performance of the season beyond perhaps the first two games in Boston.

“I mean, who loves no punchouts?” he asked, referring to Chris Sale’s inability to record a strikeout in five innings. “I do.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora expressed different feelings on the topic, on a night when his team’s dissatisfaction with home plate umpire Junior Valentine’s strike zone led to hitting coach Peter Fatse’s ejection in the sixth inning. Cora was tossed after the final out, which results in a fine from the league.

Sale struck out 11 batters in his previous start against the Twins, but the Orioles made contact on 40 of their 42 swings against him in a 5-4 win.

They didn’t have a batter strike out for the first time since Aug. 8, 2010 against the White Sox.

Austin Hays on Alex Cora's comments and more

The Orioles' level of play has improved, no doubt, over the team that lost 110 games in 2021. That club won just 20 of 76 American League East division games (.263) last year and the current Orioles are 11-16 (.407) in the division.

They just completed a two-week run of games versus the AL East and went 7-8 against the Yankees, Rays, Yankees again and Red Sox. This run started with three straight losses at home to the Yankees and ended with a 7-5 stretch.

The Orioles have gone 4-9 versus the Yankees and 7-7 combined against the Rays and Red Sox, a year after going a combined 7-31 against those two clubs.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora threw the Orioles some props with reporters after Baltimore hammered his team 10-0 last night to win that series, three victories to two.

“Stuff-wise, they’re (pitching) really good,” Cora told reporters Monday night. “You see it. Everybody sees it. We saw it early in the season. … I'm not surprised, because that's how it started in Houston. It started with pitching.”

Armstrong transferred from paternity list to injured list (plus notes)

Armstrong transferred from paternity list to injured list (plus notes)
Reliever Shawn Armstrong has been reinstated from the paternity list today. However, he can't rejoin the team until going through the intake process, which has placed him on the injured list. This is a procedural move, which happened a few times last summer. Another similarity between 2020 and 2021. The bullpen remains intact while he's on the IL. A corresponding roster move will be made after he's activated. Manager Brandon Hyde said he was hopeful that Armstrong would be available Monday...

After Dodgers eclipse Rays in World Series, what's next for baseball?

After Dodgers eclipse Rays in World Series, what's next for baseball?
The Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Clayton Kershaw are finally celebrating a World Series victory, the franchise's first since 1988, the year the Dodgers beat the Oakland Athletics. Dodgers infielder Justin Turner tested positive for COVID-19 and is under investigation by Major League Baseball for joining teammates in the on-field celebration. How fitting is that for the coronavirus season? So what's next? There's always second-guessing, trade and free agent talk, and discussion about how...

Astros fire Luhnow and Hinch after MLB levies penalties in sign-stealing case

Astros fire Luhnow and Hinch after MLB levies penalties in sign-stealing case
Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch were suspended by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred Monday for allowing the team's uniformed personnel to steal signs electronically during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Luhnow and Hinch were suspended through the 2020 World Series. The Astros also were fined $5 million - the maximum allowed under MLB rules - and they'll have to forfeit first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. About an hour the initial report...

Managers resigned to - but slow to warm to - new rule for relief pitchers

Managers resigned to - but slow to warm to - new rule for relief pitchers
SAN DIEGO - Angels manager Joe Maddon likes the idea of quickening the pace of the game. He doesn't like the idea of making relievers pitch to three batters or finish an inning before coming out of the game, a rule that Commissioner Rob Manfred might implement for 2020. "I don't like it. I haven't liked it from the beginning," Maddon said during his Winter Meetings press conference. "I don't quite get it. I'm all for messing with the pace of the game. I think that's important. "The...

Storylines abound as disrespected Red Sox battle title-hungry Dodgers in World Series

Storylines abound as disrespected Red Sox battle title-hungry Dodgers in World Series
The Brewers' run at making the World Series for the first time since 1982 was refreshing, but the 114th World Series that starts Tuesday has a rare storyline. The last time the Red Sox and Dodgers played in the World Series was 1916, and the Dodgers weren't even the Dodgers: They were the Brooklyn Robins, named for their manager, Wilbert Robinson. (The Robins became the Dodgers in 1932 and then moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.) The Red Sox won the 1916 series in five games. Babe...

Cora reportedly out of the mix for Nationals job

Cora reportedly out of the mix for Nationals job
One of the Nationals' preferred candidates for their now-vacant managerial position appears to already be headed elsewhere. And even if he's not, the Nats would have to wait until the end of the World Series to hire him. Alex Cora has been on the Nationals' radar, but the popular Astros bench coach already interviewed with the Red Sox and is expected to be named Boston's new manager once Houston's season is over, according to reports by The Athletic and NBC Sports Boston. The Astros'...

Looking at some possible successors to Dusty Baker

Looking at some possible successors to Dusty Baker
With Dusty Baker out as manager after leading the Nationals to back-to-back National League East titles and consecutive first-round playoff departures, one question is on the lips of Nats fans: Who's next? Do the Nats turn to a veteran field boss, someone who's shown a propensity for getting teams deep into the postseason? Do they focus their attentions on someone whose personality is a good match for a star-filled clubhouse? Do they eschew an old-school candidate for someone more cutting...

Alex Cora has ties to the Nationals and Mike Rizzo's respect

Alex Cora has ties to the Nationals and Mike Rizzo's respect
When names are floated as the potential next manager of the Washington Nationals, none has the ties to the organization as Alex Cora. Sure Cora only played one of his 14 years in the majors with the Nationals, but he quickly and clearly made an impression. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo signed Cora before spring training in 2011 and the veteran infielder batted .224 in 91 games in what ended up as his last season in the majors. But Rizzo took note of Cora's work around the field as a...

On Mike Rizzo and the Nationals' managerial search

On Mike Rizzo and the Nationals' managerial search
Well, the parade has begun. Just not the one Bryce Harper envisioned when he uttered, "Where's my ring?" and thought hopefully of what a Constitution Avenue celebration might look like. The procession of potential candidates to replace the fired Matt Williams as manager of the Nationals is under way on South Capitol Street. Well, we assume the candidates are interviewing at the team's Nationals Park offices. The way the Nationals are handling this managerial search is so surreptitious that...

Scouting report on catcher Johnny Monell from his winter league GM

Scouting report on catcher Johnny Monell from his winter league GM
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico - One of the Orioles not in mini-camp in Sarasota this week is catcher Johnny Monell, who was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 30 in exchange for cash considerations. Monell, who got his first taste of the majors in 2013, is expected to compete for the role of Matt Wieters' backup in spring training. Monell is currently playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League - officially Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente - with los Criollos de Caguas,...

Former National Alex Cora thriving in role as winter league GM

Former National Alex Cora thriving in role as winter league GM
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico - Thirty minutes before first pitch at Estadio Yldefonso Sola Morales, Alex Cora is working the rail at the home dugout on the third base side like it's a receiving line at a wedding reception. He stops and greets every player on Los Criollos de Caguas, shaking hands, slapping palms and offering encouragement. If not for the fact that he's in a short-sleeved plaid shirt with a backpack slung over his shoulder, you'd think the smiling 38-year-old was one of the...

With Zimmerman out, can Morse move to third base?

With Zimmerman out, can Morse move to third base?
Now that Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is going to be out of the lineup for an extended period of time, what can the team do to add some punch to an offense that continues to struggle to put runs on the board? I started to think of possible solutions available right now on the current 25-man roster. One possible avenue is more playing time for Laynce Nix, who has had some big hits in limited duty this season. Nix has cranked game-winning home runs against the New York Mets and San...

Espinosa and Cora plate key insurance run

Espinosa and Cora plate key insurance run
The Phillies had just scored two big runs to cut the deficit to 6-3, and even though it was the eighth inning, the Nationals knew the defending division champions were not going to go away. In the bottom of the eighth, Danny Espinosa went to work, drawing a walk from Phillies reliever Danys Baez. After a groundout by Jerry Hairston Jr. got him to second base, Alex Cora smacked a single to left field to plate a critical insurance tally, and the Nationals led, 7-3. Crucial to the success of...
