Orioles morning spring training notes on McGregor, Webb and Suárez

SARASOTA, Fla. – Scott McGregor won big games for the Orioles, including his shutout against the Phillies to clinch the 1983 World Series. He served in a variety of roles upon his retirement, including rehab pitching coordinator for eight seasons before his dismissal in 2019. He had worked as a pitching coach in the minors and fill-in bullpen coach for the Orioles. He’s seen a lot.

His eyes presently are locked onto pitchers and players at the spring training complex with his return as a guest instructor.

“When I was let go, Mike (Elias) said, ‘Listen, we know what you’ve done for the organization and we’ll always let you come back as a visiting guy,’ so it’s been good,” McGregor recalled yesterday. “These guys are the ones that I coached before. I’m very good with them and they like seeing me and I like seeing them. It’s fun to stay in touch.

“I’m just really impressed with what’s going on with the whole Elias regime and with Hyder (Brandon Hyde) and them. They’ve done a great job. So, you’ve just got to win a playoff game.”

Maybe this year.

Leftovers for breakfast

Albert Suárez made a run at a rotation spot in spring training, faltered late and was reassigned to minor league camp. He was an unexpected addition to the roster on April 17 after the Orioles placed Tyler Wells on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. And he keeps finding ways to contribute.

Maybe to complicate, too.

Two starts produced a combined 11 1/3 scoreless innings, because the man is full of surprises. The Orioles ran out of room in the rotation and moved him to the bullpen, where he retired all seven Cincinnati batters he faced Sunday afternoon.

“He made it look pretty easy,” said manager Brandon Hyde.

Nothing was simple about Suárez’s assignment Wednesday night in D.C. The 10th inning, automatic runner on second base, game on the line. Luis García Jr. didn’t budge because Suárez induced a grounder and fly ball and struck out Joey Meneses on a 96 mph four-seamer to keep the score tied.

Returning players from 1983 championship team reminisce and find comparisons to 2023 club

Former Orioles pitcher Mike Boddicker didn’t hesitate when asked yesterday whether the Orioles can win the World Series, their first since the 1983 team that’s going to be honored prior to tonight's game. He pounced on the question like a dogpile on the mound.

“Heck yes,” he said.

“I look at these pitchers and stuff and I’m going, ‘Yeah, they’ve got enough, they’ve got enough.’ And they have fun. If you look down, they’re having fun.”

Build a 40th anniversary reunion and they will come.

More than 20 players from ’83, ranging from superstars to modest contributors. They didn’t have the same careers but were on the same page about the similarities between their team and the 2023 Orioles, who won again last night and improved to 68-42.

Remembering the other catchers on the '83 championship team

Remembering the other catchers on the '83 championship team
In the world of improbable World Series Most Valuable Players, there's always going to be a seat at the table for former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey. And you can be certain that he's going to block the plate. You know what they say about old habits. Dempsey went 5-for-13 with four doubles and a home run in 1983 and did his usual outstanding work defensively and handling the pitching staff. And the Orioles disposed of the Phillies in five games, with Dempsey embracing Scott McGregor after the...

Important Orioles events on this date

Important Orioles events on this date
On this date in 1970, the Orioles were a day removed from clinching their second World Series title. The champagne had barely dried. But a year later, they faced a must-win situation against the Pirates at Memorial Stadium. Down 3-2 in games, the Orioles won 3-2 in 10 innings on Brooks Robinson's sacrifice fly off Bob Miller that scored Frank Robinson, who drew a one-out walk and hustled to third base on Merv Rettenmund's single. Brooks always will be remembered for his defensive wizardry in...

Brocail and Flores won't return to Orioles coaching staff

Brocail and Flores won't return to Orioles coaching staff
The offseason work conducted by the Orioles has moved past the 40-man roster today and impacted two coaches. The Orioles aren't going to bring back pitching coach Doug Brocail and third base coach/infield instructor Jose Flores, according to multiple industry sources. Potential candidates have not been determined and no other changes are coming to the staff at this time, per a source. Brocail was hired in January 2019 as the replacement for Roger McDowell, who served on former manager Buck...

Last game marks beginning of free agency

Last game marks beginning of free agency
The World Series is over and the 2019 season officially has been put to bed. Long past a reasonable hour. Players will begin hitting the free agent market instead of fastballs. It's one of the most important early developments of the offseason. The list of Orioles pending free agents usually has more meat on it. Mark Trumbo stands alone this year unless the club decides later to non-tender players who remain eligible for arbitration. The discussion over which free agents could be re-signed is...

Is Mallee a candidate to join Orioles?

Is Mallee a candidate to join Orioles?
The Orioles handled the task this week of notifying three coaches that they wouldn't have their contracts renewed for the 2020 season. The first steps toward making changes. Steps that were bound to happen, though the challenge was identifying the impacted members of the staff. Up next are interviews with candidates that should begin in a couple of days. A procedure that's keeping manager Brandon Hyde in Baltimore. What's known at the present time is that first base coach/outfield instructor...

Holt: "If we can compete in this division, we can smoke anybody"

Holt: "If we can compete in this division, we can smoke anybody"
A big chunk of the early offseason work being done by the Orioles involves the construction of the minor league coaching staffs. A task that already was in motion long before the Red Sox's walk-off win on Sunday. Making outside hires and reassigning individuals to a higher or lower affiliate. Changing a few roles in order to keep people in the organization while also making room for others or eliminating the job as it previously had been defined. Sean Berry is expected to come back to the...

Elias on latest changes in organization

Elias on latest changes in organization
Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias confirmed this afternoon that the Orioles informed 14 more employees that they won't return in 2020. Elias said the total includes individuals at the Dominican academy who hadn't been reported. There are indications that more changes are coming, though Elias didn't address them in specific terms. He said the amount of hires could exceed the losses, but there will be title changes and new positions created that will be evident in next...

Who's up first? Smith's hamstring gives Showalter dilemma

Who's up first? Smith's hamstring gives Showalter dilemma
CINCINNATI - Orioles manager Buck Showalter is expected to change leadoff hitters tonight with the Reds sending right-hander Scott Feldman to the mound. But Seth Smith's hamstring again could put anyone in play. A healthy Smith stays atop the order. If he can't go, Showalter might turn to Hyun Soo Kim or stick with Trey Mancini, depending on whether the rookie remains in the lineup. Not having a designated hitter is a huge complication. Showalter probably wants to keep Mark Trumbo in right...

More on Tillman, roster, fifth starter, more (O's win 5-4)

More on Tillman, roster, fifth starter, more (O's win 5-4)
Kevin Gausman is warming in the Orioles' bullpen this afternoon while pitching coach Roger McDowell stands behind him. We're a few minutes away from the anthem and the season's fourth game. Chris Tillman's work already is done for the day. I wrote earlier that Tillman threw 25-30 pitches during a live batting practice session in Sarasota. He'll take off the next two days and pitch Tuesday in an extended spring training game, the goal being two innings and around 30 pitches. "He's going...

The Davis family serving as ambassadors for UMCH

The Davis family serving as ambassadors for UMCH
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is counted among the Orioles representatives this morning attending the annual holiday party for kids at Dave & Busters at the Arundel Mills Mall, and that's just a part of the giving. The Orioles and OriolesREACH are hosting 80 outpatients from the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. Davis and wife Jill will use the setting to announce that they're serving as ambassadors for UMCH, helping to raise awareness for childhood illnesses and the...

Dealing from strength: Should O's consider moving relievers?

Dealing from strength: Should O's consider moving relievers?
When other teams come knocking at the Orioles' door looking for relievers, should they listen? Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said today that other clubs are showing a lot of interest in pitchers in the Orioles bullpen in trade discussions. There are a couple of good reasons for that. For one, the O's 'pen led the American League with a 3.40 ERA that ranked third in the majors. Secondly, the club's top relievers are under team control for at least two years, some more than...

Another chance to give thanks

Another chance to give thanks
With the pitching coach and bullpen coach vacancies filled this week, and on the same day no less, the Orioles can turn their collective attention to replacing director of pitching development Rick Peterson. They also may want to replace the title. Minor league pitching coordinator is more to the point. Executive vice president Dan Duquette, vice president Brady Anderson and manager Buck Showalter again will be involved in the process, and director of player development Brian Graham figures to...

More on changes in Orioles farm system

More on changes in Orioles farm system
The Orioles are busy without actually making any big moves or announcements. Besides executive vice president Dan Duquette's work at the general managers meetings, intended again to lay the groundwork for deals and agreements at the Winter Meetings, and the ongoing interviews for pitching and bullpen coach, the Orioles are making a few changes in their farm system. I reported yesterday that Rick Peterson was out as director of pitching development. The Orioles want to go in another direction,...

McGregor's role in Miley's strong finish

McGregor's role in Miley's strong finish
As the Orioles seem content or financially motivated to stick with their rotation candidates next spring, they're banking on left-hander Wade Miley to give them a greater return on their trade with the Mariners. Miley went 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA and 1.574 WHIP in 11 starts with the Orioles, but he picked up a head of steam toward the finish. In his last three outings, he held the opposition to four runs and struck out 23 batters over 18 2/3 innings. The Rays, Diamondbacks and Yankees can vouch...

J.J. Hardy says left foot pain-free as he readies for Sarasota
Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy said his left foot feels the same as it did the day after he sustained a hairline fracture. In other words, no pain is viewed as a significant gain. Hardy continues to wear a boot on the foot, though he removed it at his locker this afternoon while changing clothes. He still hasn't applied any pressure and continues to walk with crutches. Hardy said he may be allowed to ditch the crutches early next week. The current plan calls for Hardy to fly to Sarasota and stay...

Nats option Hill to Triple-A, reassign three others to minors (with lineups)
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Nationals have optioned right-handed pitcher Taylor Hill to Triple-A Syracuse and reassigned right-handers Eric Fornataro, Mitch Lively, and Scott McGregor to minor league camp. Hill, 26, made three appearances this spring, allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings, while striking out five, walking none and hitting two batters. A sixth-round pick by the Nationals in 2006, Hill rejoins Syracuse, where he was 11-7 with a 2.81 ERA in 24 starts last season. He made...

Notes on the offense, Aberdeen's All-Stars and more with the Hall of Famers

Notes on the offense, Aberdeen's All-Stars and more with the Hall of Famers
Will the real Orioles offense stand up? Is it the group that scored just three runs on six hits in the last two games of the Toronto series? Or is it the group that scored 22 runs on 31 hits with nine homers the last two games against St. Louis? Chris Tillman and Ubaldo Jimenez probably don't want to analyze it. They are happy to get that run support, and the Orioles look for the sweep this afternoon at Camden Yards. After scoring nine or more runs in just five of their first 111 games, the...
