A few quick pre-Christmas thoughts

Just a short entry today to wish all the readers at Steve’s blog and all of Birdland a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season. Enjoy your time with family and friends and I hope it’s your best Christmas yet.

A few quick thoughts on things in the news the last few days ...

Yamamoto signs: The Dodgers signed pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a 12-year deal for $325 million. It will also cost them the nearly $51 million posting fee that goes to the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball.

The rich get richer (in talent) here as Los Angeles wins the bidding war over several other big-market teams, even though the finalists reportedly made impressive bids. He pitched to an ERA of 1.21 (yep, not a misprint) over 168 innings and gave up just two home runs all season in 2023. His ERAs the previous two years were 1.39 and 1.68.

Kodai Senga came from Japan and pitched for the Mets. After posting an ERA of 1.89 in 2022 in Japan, he pitched to a 2.98 ERA for the Mets. That ranked fifth-best in all of MLB, one spot behind Kyle Bradish of the Orioles.

Former Orioles infielder Ryan Minor has passed away after battling colon cancer

Ryan Minor, remembered for replacing Cal Ripken Jr. at third base on the night that baseball’s Iron Man voluntarily ended his consecutive-games streak, died tonight after fighting Stage 4 colon cancer for more than a year. He would have celebrated his 50th birthday on Jan. 5.

Minor was placed in home hospice care last month.

Minor’s twin brother Damon, who played for the Giants from 2000-04, shared the news in a message on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“After a courageous and hard fought battle I’m sad to say that Ryan lost his fight with cancer this afternoon,” Damon wrote. “He truly was the best twin brother you can ask for. His family and I want to thank everyone for the prayers and support during this time.”

Minor spent parts of three seasons with the Orioles and finished in 2001 with the Expos. He also was a basketball standout at the University of Oklahoma and was drafted in two sports. He later managed at Single-A Delmarva and Frederick.

Revisiting notes on Mateo, McCann, Mullins, Pérez, Rutschman and Urías

Time to revisit more notes from the 2023 season. And not just the facts.

Here’s another attempt to expand on them. Stretching the truth.

Fact: Jorge Mateo became the first player in Orioles history and the eighth in the majors since at least 1901 with multiple stolen bases in a team’s first two games of the season. He also became the first player in club history and the 14th player since 1901 with at least four stolen bases in his first two games to begin a season. Mateo became the ninth Oriole to steal at least 20 bases in the team’s first 68 games and the first since Nate McLouth had 23 in 2013.

Follow: If only Mateo could reach base more often, but that’s been his issue at every stop.

Top 100 prospects don’t usually move around this much. He’s been traded twice and claimed on waivers, and he’s only 28.

Road trip marked by close games ends with back-to-back losses for O's

During a road trip where six of the seven games were decided by one or two runs, the Orioles went 4-2 in those six games, which is quite respectable. But they lost the last two, which stings a bit.

They come home with a series loss at Philadelphia (went 1-2) after their big series win (went 3-1) against Tampa Bay.

But we should also keep in mind they were tied for first with Tampa Bay when that series began and now, they lead the AL East by 1.5 games. They are 5.5 games ahead of Toronto which currently holds the third AL wild card spot.

But the Orioles have had some problems this year against National League teams. While they have played .644 ball (47-26) against American League teams they have played just .517 ball (15-14) versus the NL.

They have gone 1-2 in series against Atlanta. the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philaelphia.

Ryan Minor diagnosed with colon cancer

I’m going to peel away from the standard baseball talk this morning and share some sad news about former Orioles third baseman Ryan Minor.

Minor, 48, recently was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. His twin brother, Damon, is involved in setting up a GoFundMe page to gather donations on behalf of his wife Allyson.

Why good people keep being hit with this kind of news is forever a source of tremendous frustration. And you can be sure that Minor is one of the really good guys in the industry and outside of it. A high-character individual and as nice as they come.

Minor spent parts of three seasons with the Orioles from 1998-2000 and finished his major league career with the Expos in 2001 after they acquired him in a trade for reliever Jorge Julio.

The Orioles hired Minor as hitting and infield coach with Single-A Delmarva in 2008, after he served as the first hitting coach for the independent York Revolution. He managed the Shorebirds from 2010-12 and high Single-A Frederick in 2013 before returning to Delmarva for the 2014-17 seasons. He managed the Keys again in 2018-19 before the Tigers hired him to manage in the Gulf Coast League in 2020.

Minors notes on Stowers, Clark and Minor

Minors notes on Stowers, Clark and Minor
The Winter Meetings are providing opportunities for Orioles prospects to find out what all the commotion is about and sharpen their interview skills with the beat crew. Shortstop Cadyn Grenier visited the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last December because he lived about 10 minutes away and couldn't pass up the opportunity, which included an introduction with executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias. Outfielder Kyle Stowers, a California native chosen with the 71st...

Minor, Manto among latest dismissals from Orioles (updated)
The changes in various departments in the Orioles organization, reaching down to the lower levels of the minors, continued today with the firings of at least eight more employees. According to sources, the Orioles are parting ways with minor league hitting coordinator Jeff Manto, minor league catching coordinator Don Werner, special assignment pitching instructor Ramón Martinez, Single-A Frederick manager Ryan Minor, Keys pitching coach Justin Lord and hitting coach Bobby Rose, short-season...

North makes good on Yahn's bold prediction, rallies for 8-7 win in Carolina League All-Star Classic

North makes good on Yahn's bold prediction, rallies for 8-7 win in Carolina League All-Star Classic
FREDERICK, Md. - The South Division had jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the second when Single-A Frederick third baseman Willy Yahn went up and down the North Division dugout, trying to pump up his teammates. "I was just saying to the guys - semi-joking around and semi-serious - 'Greatest comeback in All-Star Game history coming up,' " Yahn said. "We're just trying to compete, no matter what the score is." Yahn capped a four-run sixth inning with a two-run double that shaved the South lead...

Sedlock will start Thursday for Keys after being backed off to limit innings

Sedlock will start Thursday for Keys after being backed off to limit innings
FREDERICK, Md. - Cody Sedlock's hiatus is about to end, and the right-hander couldn't be happier. Sedlock, who is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in eight starts for Single-A Frederick this season, will start Thursday at Wilmington when the Keys open the second half of their schedule. It'll be his ninth start of the season, but his first since May 25. "I've been 100 percent for a little bit, for a while," Sedlock said this afternoon before the Carolina League All-Star Classic at Nymeo...

Gary Kendall named manager at Triple-A Norfolk

Gary Kendall named manager at Triple-A Norfolk
Beyond the outside hires that have been made public via Twitter, the Orioles also are shuffling minor league personnel to fill vacancies at multiple levels of their farm system. The Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk has announced the promotion of manager Gary Kendall, 55, from Double-A Bowie. Kendall will replace Ron Johnson. Buck Britton, 32, is moving up from low Single-A Delmarva to Bowie as Kendall's replacement, according to sources. An announcement from the Orioles is pending on the...

Coolbaugh on homer reliance, Cortes on rotation shot (updated)

Coolbaugh on homer reliance, Cortes on rotation shot (updated)
In three of the last six seasons, the Orioles have led the major leagues in home runs. They topped every club by hitting 212 in 2013, 211 in 2014 and 253 in 2016. The 2017 Orioles hit 232 home runs, but that ranked only fifth both in the American League and the major leagues behind the Yankees (241), Astros (238), Rangers (237) and Athletics (234). The Orioles had seven players hit 20 or more homers last season for just the second time in club history. The 1996 team also had seven. Tim Beckham...

Buck Britton on getting the manager's job with Delmarva

Buck Britton on getting the manager's job with Delmarva
The Orioles now have two Bucks managing in the organization. At their hot stove banquet last night in Salisbury, Md., the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds announced that Buck Britton will be their manager in 2018. The older brother of Orioles closer Zach Britton, Buck was drafted by the club in the 35th round of the 2008 draft. After a nine-year playing career in the minors, the 31-year-old Britton moved into the coaching ranks last season when he was Delmarva's hitting coach. He takes over as...

Notes on starting pitching market, contract talks and more

Notes on starting pitching market, contract talks and more
As the offseason moves closer toward the date when pitchers and catchers report to spring training, the Orioles haven't been able to find starters on the free agent market who are within their price range or don't pose a risk of flunking the physical. I've written that the club expressed concerns over the medicals on multiple starters, further thinning out a crop that doesn't impress beyond the upper tier. They're not in on Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta and don't expect Alex Cobb or Lance...

Flaherty gets rare start tonight (we're tied)

Flaherty gets rare start tonight (we're tied)
Shortstop J.J. Hardy is out of the Orioles lineup tonight for the first time since April 15 in Toronto, which coincided with Ryan Flaherty's only start this month. Hardy got to rest two days later with the Orioles having their fourth open date on the schedule. He played in the next eight games without a break, going 4-for-30, after a 7-for-16 stretch in the previous four games. The Orioles are off again Thursday, giving Hardy an extended rest before Friday night's series opener at Yankee...

Prospect profile: Brian Gonzalez made solid improvements in 2016

Prospect profile: Brian Gonzalez made solid improvements in 2016
In the minor leagues, sometimes a young player has to repeat a level to improve. That was the case in the 2016 season for Orioles left-handed pitching prospect Brian Gonzalez. A third-round pick (No. 90 overall) in the 2014 draft, Gonzalez pitched at Single-A Delmarva in 2015 at 19. He went 4-9 with a 5.71 ERA. Last season, back again with the Shorebirds at 20, Gonzalez went 10-8 with a 2.50 ERA and ranked third in the South Atlantic League in ERA and innings. He ranked second in ERA among...

Looking ahead to the Rule 5 draft with Baseball America's J.J. Cooper

Looking ahead to the Rule 5 draft with Baseball America's J.J. Cooper
NASHVILLE - The Orioles have the No. 15 pick in tomorrow's Rule 5 draft here. We've come to expect the O's to make a pick in this draft - last year they selected two players - and this year should be no different. Expect the O's to make a pick. Since some teams will pass, there should not be 14 players taken before the Orioles select. In recent years they have added Ryan Flaherty, T.J. McFarland and Jason Garica in the Rule 5. No one has been more clued in on this draft than J.J. Cooper of...

Delmarva's Cam Kneeland making the most of his opportunity

Delmarva's Cam Kneeland making the most of his opportunity
SALISBURY, Md. - It's three hours before the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds entertain the Charleston RiverDogs in a doubleheader at Perdue Stadium, and there's precious little activity that would suggest that a pair of seven-inning games are on the docket. Most of the Shorebirds are escaping the sweltering 88-degree heat by seeking refuge in the air-conditioned clubhouse, though a few guys clad in shorts are whizzing a Nerf Vortex football in left field, oblivious to the blazing sun. Beneath...

Minor league manager assignments for 2015 and other notes

Minor league manager assignments for 2015 and other notes
All six managers, from the rookie-level Gulf Coast League up through Triple-A Norfolk, will return to manage Orioles affiliates next season. Three will return to their 2014 teams, while three will be with new clubs in 2015. The Orioles have not confirmed this or made any announcements yet about their 2015 minor league staff, but Ron Johnson is expected to return to manage at Triple-A Norfolk, Gary Kendall will return to Double-A Bowie and Ryan Minor is expected to return to Single-A...

More from the minor league award winners

More from the minor league award winners
Last night was a special one for the Orioles player development department as this year's award winners were announced and honored at Camden Yards. They were introduced to the crowd at the ballpark and before that held a press conference with reporters that was also attended by their family members who came to support the players and honorees. First baseman Christian Walker was named O's minor league Player of the Year, taking the Brooks Robinson Award. Right-hander Tyler Wilson was honored...

Ryan Minor on Dylan Bundy: "He's going to be a special one"

Ryan Minor on Dylan Bundy: "He's going to be a special one"
SALISBURY, Md. - It is hard to find someone that has seen Dylan Bundy pitch this year that is not raving about his talent and work ethic. The Orioles' 2011 first-round draft pick has pitched nine hitless and shutout innings in three outings so far for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds as he prepares tonight to face Greenville at 7:05 at Perdue Stadium in his fourth professional start. Delmarva manager Ryan Minor has seen a lot of young hot shots come along over the years and said Bundy, it...
