Sugano faces hitters in first live batting practice

SARASOTA, Fla. – Tomoyuki Sugano reported to Orioles camp on Saturday, but today felt like the beginning of spring training. Three different hitters stood at the plate against him in live batting practice at Ed Smith Stadium, rotating until he faced eight during his session. A lengthy mound conference followed with catcher Adley Rutschman, pitching coach Drew French, guest instructor and former pitcher Ben McDonald, and interpreter Yuto Sakurai.

Sugano lingered for a little bit longer as the session broke up, sweeping his foot across the dirt and measuring his stride. The mounds in Japan have a softer composition and the rubber sits further back. Just one more adjustment.

The Orioles scheduled only one live BP today and arranged for Sugano to face prospects Enrique Bradfield Jr., Dylan Beavers and Jud Fabian. Beavers flied out and doubled twice on a pair of hard-hit line drives. Fabian struck out twice and singled or doubled into left field – players don’t run the bases – and Bradfield grounded out and lined to left field.

Here’s what they’re saying about the session:

“O’s Xtra” to provide pregame and postgame coverage throughout postseason

Postseason baseball is an exciting time for any baseball fan. And if you’re an Orioles fan, it’s especially thrilling this season. But with high-stakes baseball also comes national broadcasts and the absence of familiarity from the broadcast crew you’ve spent the last seven months with.

Impact of rotation's shortcomings on Orioles bullpen, and Gibson's record-setting starts

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde kept rookie Grayson Rodriguez on the mound Tuesday for 99 pitches, the right-hander’s highest total in four years dating back to A ball. It wasn’t a test of strength and endurance. It wasn’t intended as a professional life lesson.

The club just needed the length.

“I can’t continue to pull our starters in the fifth inning,” Hyde said afterward.

Rodriguez was gone after walking the bases loaded and retiring only one batter in the fifth, the failure to put away hitters with two strikes coming back to bite him. But the stuff is filthy and the leash is long enough to reach Chicago, where he’ll start again Sunday afternoon.

What happens after that is the mystery, with Kyle Bradish pitching Friday night at Double-A Bowie and lined up for an April 19 return in D.C. if he stays on turn.

Jackson Holliday from his press conference, and Terrin Vavra set for MLB debut

The Orioles third-ever No. 1 overall MLB Draft pick arrived at Camden Yards today. But not for good this time. Jackson Holliday, taken No. 1 overall by the team July 17, has signed his first pro contract and will report to the O’s camp in Sarasota, Fla. tomorrow.

He is going to start his pro career playing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

“I’m very, very excited to start playing,” the 18-year-old Holliday said at today’s introductory press conference that also featured O’s executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias and Holliday’s agent Scott Boras. “It’s been a little bit since I’ve been able to compete on the baseball field. So very excited to get down to Florida and get going. This is what I wanted to do as long as I can remember. It’s a blessing to be where I’m sitting right now.”

Holliday got a bonus of $8.19 million, a record for a high school selection. He produced prodigious 41-game high school stats of .685/.749/1.392 with 29 doubles, six triples, 17 homers and 79 RBIs. His 89 hits set a national high school record.

He gets scouting tool grades of 55 or better across the board with his hit tool, running and arm grading out at 60 by Baseball America.

A day for giving thanks

A day for giving thanks
The date on the calendar, the 15-pound thawed turkey in the refrigerator and the forced viewing of a Lions game indicate that it's time again to give thanks, something that should be done on a daily basis, but tends to slip through life's cracks. There's the most obvious starting point - canned cranberry sauce. OK, seriously, it's family. Including my new wife and 14-month-old granddaughter who makes it impossible to remember what life was like before her arrival. She's such a blessing. I...

Tyler Wells makes impressive first impression

Tyler Wells makes impressive first impression
Tyler Wells won't be able to truly demonstrate what he offers the Orioles as a pitcher until reporting to spring training and getting on a mound. Until he faces hitters in live batting practice sessions and in exhibition games. What he's done so far is prove that he's going to be one of the more thoughtful, open and articulate members of the organization. Wells was credited with a quality Zoom yesterday afternoon in his first media session after the Orioles chose him in Thursday's Rule 5...

Learning more about Sceroler from his famous uncle

Learning more about Sceroler from his famous uncle
Ben McDonald and his nephew chatted last weekend in Louisiana about two of their favorite topics, the hunting and baseball seasons intertwined. McDonald, the first-overall selection in the 1989 amateur draft who spent nine years in the majors. Mac Sceroler, a former fifth-round selection of the Reds out of Southeastern Louisiana who was the fifth player chosen Thursday morning in the Rule 5 draft. A former high-profile Orioles pitcher and current MASN analyst, and a close relative who will...

Orioles select two pitchers, lose two in Rule 5 draft (Snyder quote)
The Orioles again made two selections in today's Rule 5 draft and they again focused on pitching. The fifth overall pick turned into right-hander Mac Sceroler, the nephew of former Orioles pitcher Ben McDonald. The Orioles took right-hander Tyler Wells in the second round to fill out their 40-man roster. Sceroler, 25, came from the Reds organization, where he posted a 3.69 ERA and a 1.111 WHIP in 26 games (20 starts) at high Single-A Daytona in 2019 and averaged 9.8 strikeouts per nine...

McDonald shares insights on Ripken, Rutschman, broadcasting and more (with video)
So I was at it again yesterday, recording another Zoom video interview. That's three now with a few more coming. Hopefully, our readers here are enjoying the interviews and stories. Today's chat, with former Orioles pitcher and current MASN broadcaster Ben McDonald, featured some great insights and stories. Fans have been thrilled to have Big Ben back with the organization the last few years. He and Adley Rutschman are the only two humans on the planet that can say they were drafted No. 1...

More memories of Frank Robinson

More memories of Frank Robinson
On a normal day in an offseason that's been light on significant Orioles roster news, the signing of pitcher Nate Karns to a one-year deal would have lit up the social media switchboard. The conversations would have touched on his chances of filling a spot in the rotation, his injury history, the pros and cons of a low-risk move that eliminated infielder Jack Reinheimer from the 40-man roster, and maybe the assignment of uniform No. 36, which had belonged to catcher Caleb Joseph. The passing...

Chris Davis on struggles, false theories and whether he'd quit

Chris Davis on struggles, false theories and whether he'd quit
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Chris Davis walked up the left field line at Tropicana Field before batting practice this week, found a box seat in the second row and joked about becoming the guy whose name was etched in a tiny gold plate. If only it were that simple for Davis to escape his own skin. He isn't looking for pity, which rarely comes to a man who's being paid $161 million to play a sport. But the chance to duck the spotlight and the steady flow of criticism was embraced beneath the...

A 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane (O's win 9-7)

A 25th anniversary stroll down memory lane (O's win 9-7)
Rick Sutcliffe, the man who stood on the mound for the first inning of the first game at Camden Yards back in 1992, remembers the excitement in his household as the letter arrived from the Orioles inviting him to the 25th anniversary celebration that's taking place this weekend, beginning with today's luncheon at the B&O Warehouse. The feeling was much different for Glenn Davis, the former first baseman who arrived with tremendous fanfare and left as the centerpiece in arguably the worst...

Joseph loses arbitration case (and signs one-year deal)

Joseph loses arbitration case (and signs one-year deal)
One arbitration hearing is in the books for the Orioles, with catcher Caleb Joseph coming out on the losing end in St. Petersburg, Fla. The ruling was handed down today. Joseph will be paid $700,000 instead of the $1 million that he sought. He made $523,500 in 2016. In 49 games last season, Joseph batted .174/.216/.197 with three doubles and no RBIs. He missed a month of the season after suffering a testicular injury that required surgery. Joseph registered a .994 fielding percentage and threw...

Rickard and Lee reinstated from 60-day disabled list (updated)

Rickard and Lee reinstated from 60-day disabled list (updated)
The World Series is over and it's time for teams to focus on the 40-man roster, which includes returning players to it who were removed due to injury. The Orioles have reinstated outfielder Joey Rickard and minor league pitcher Chris Lee from the 60-day disabled list, procedural moves that increase the 40-man roster to 34 players. The free agents have been eliminated. Steve Pearce was an exception because the Orioles placed him on the 60-day disabled list in September. Rickard hadn't played...

McDonald can see why Orioles want Gausman on farm
During his conference call with reporters after becoming the fourth-overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, Kevin Gausman invoked the name of another former LSU pitcher selected by the Orioles in the first round. Ben McDonald was the first overall pick in 1989 and spent seven seasons with the Orioles. He's been watching Gausman closely while serving as an analyst on LSU broadcasts, dissecting both the kid's delivery and his character. He's invited Gausman to his Baton Rouge home....

Monday Memory: Of flooded dugouts and faux fishing holes

Monday Memory: Of flooded dugouts and faux fishing holes
This weekend's brush with Hurricane Irene got me thinking about some of the waterlogged nights I've spend at Camden Yards and Memorial Stadium over the years. Rain and games don't really mix - even in football, where hearty, big guys boast about playing through just about everything weather-wise. They certainly did at the soggiest sporting event I ever attended, a Canadian Football League game on 33rd Street during the first year of the Baltimore Stallions. The heavens opened and didn't...
